Doctor Clark Savage, Jr., known primarily as Doc Savage was a monumental explorer in the early 20th Century. He was created by Henry Ralston and John Nanovic, and he starred in numerous pulp adventure novels beginning in March of 1933 written primarily by American author Lester Dent under the pseudonym Kenneth Robeson. Known for his Herculean physique, tanned skin, and mysterious violet eyes, he has been acknowledged by many as the precursor to the modern superhero. In 2013, for the 6th entry in The All-New Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, Skull Island, he was charged with removing King Kong’s body from 5th Avenue, and recalled a time the two had crossed paths earlier in their lives.

History

Doc Savage: Skull Island

After a life of hard work and grueling exercise enforced by his cold and distant father, Clark Savage, Junior was in his first year of medical school when the United States joined World War I. He soon enlisted, and in the trenches met the men who would become lifelong friends, and due to his handiness with small medical procedures, earned the nickname "Doc". As soon as the war had ended, the 19-year-old Doc Savage received summons from his father to CALIFORNIA, where he revealed that all of his funds had been lost in the war, meaning that even if he wanted to, Doc could no longer afford to continue his studies. As such, the two boarded the very ship Doc had been born aboard while docked in the Bahamas, and set sail with a crew of Mayans his father had recruited in search of treasure and the fabled Skull Island.

Although he was out of the country leading up to Kong’s death, he was called in the aftermath to aid in disposing the body. Using his vast wealth and influence, He called in dirigibles to airlift Kong’s body onto borrowed telephone poles and roll him to a harborside warehouse for temporary storage. From there, he arranged with Captain Englehorn and SPINGUS to have Kong’s body returned to Skull Island, while he remained in New York City and told his longtime friends and cohorts the story of his first meeting with Kong.

Trivia

  • Several clues in the early chapters point to the novel taking place quite early in Savage's adventuring career, most likely immediately following June 1933's The Polar Treasure by Lester Dent

Clark Savage, Sr., was the father of legendary adventurer Doc Savage. He was an aloof and distant father, who allowed his son to be raised by teams of scientists in order to create a superhuman out of him. He was created by Henry Ralston and John Nanovic, and he played a posthumous supporting role in numerous pulp adventure novels beginning in March of 1933 written primarily by American author Lester Dent under the pseudonym Kenneth Robeson. Known for his Herculean physique, tanned skin, and mysterious violet eyes, he has been acknowledged by many as the precursor to the modern superhero. In 2013, for the 6th entry in The All-New Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, Skull Island, he searched for his own father, Stormalong Savage, alongside his son as they hunted for the fabled Skull Island.

History

Doc Savage: Skull Island

Clark Savage was a scientist with a cold and unwavering nature, who was practically a stranger to his son, whom he had brought up in the care of teams of scientists, and with a strict and grueling physical regimen to make him into a near superhuman being. Clark allowed his son despite his misgivings to enlist in the Great War while he was in his first year of medical school, but over the course of the war, he lost his vast fortune. Around this time, the ship belonging to his father Stormalong Savage was discovered adrift, and remembering his notion that the sea is full of treasure for those who go looking for it, he sent for his son and gathered a crew of Mayans, whom Clark believed were capable of keeping secrets, and they set sail for Sumatra.
