The Hatsuyuki-class destroyer (はつゆき型護衛艦,   Hatsuyuki-gata Goeikan) is a type of Japanese warship featured in numerous Godzilla films, beginning with Godzilla vs. Biollante.

History

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. Biollante

After Bio-Major freed Godzilla from Mount Mihara, several Hatsuyuki-class destroyers, along with the Haruna-class destroyer Hiei and a complement of UH-1B Hueys, confronted him in the Uraga Channel. Raining an onslaught of weaponry at the kaiju, the Hatsuyuki destroyers and Hiei were unsuccessful, as Godzilla destroyed the latter with his atomic breath.

Godzilla vs. Mothra

A fleet of Hatsuyuki-class destroyers were deployed to confront the larval Mothra as she approached Japan, alongside the Haruna-class destroyer Hiei. The ships fired on Mothra with their cannons, but Mothra retaliated, destroying one of the Hatsuyuki fleet (marked as DD-134) and driving off the rest of the fleet.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

The Hatsuyuki-class destroyers were deployed once more when Godzilla appeared near the coast of Kagoshima as he traveled across Japan to face SpaceGodzilla and free his son, LittleGodzilla, from his crystal prison. Once again, their weapons were ineffective, and Godzilla wiped out a Haruna-class destroyer.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

A Hatsuyuki-class destroyer, DD-123 Shirayuki, followed Godzilla off the coast of Okinawa while G-Force constructed a plan to deal with his impending meltdown.

Millennium era

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

The Hatsuyuki was used by the JMSDF when Godzilla was believed to be approaching Tokyo. The ship traveled through Tokyo Bay, and discovered the kaiju using its sonar.

Godzilla Final Wars

Stock footage of a Hatsuyuki-class destroyer from Godzilla vs. Biollante briefly appears in the film's opening credits.

Trivia

  • The naval battle in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla was significantly shortened due to several special effects malfunctions, including the self-destruction of a Haruna-class destroyer miniature's guns.
