The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of fifth generation single-seat multirole fighter aircraft, with its "B" variant having V/STOL capabilities. The F-35 has been exported to a number of countries, including Britain and Japan. They have appeared in all four Godzilla films of the Monsterverse. The craft also appeared in the 2021 series Godzilla Singular Point and the GEMSTONE short films Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex and Godzilla vs. Megalon.

History

Monsterverse

Godzilla (2014)

At least one F-35C was sent to Honolulu to track down a Russian submarine that had gone missing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii, but was brought down by the male MUTO's electromagnetic pulses. Additional F-35Cs were later deployed in large numbers to San Francisco to battle against both MUTOs. Several of these aircraft were downed by more electromagnetic pulses, crashing into the city or into San Francisco Bay.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

After King Ghidorah was released in Antarctica, a fleet of Monarch F-35As codenamed Gold Squadron arrived with the USS Argo to cover Monarch's escape from the Antarctic containment facility, firing their missiles at the rampaging Titan.

When Rodan broke free of his containment at Isla de Mara, Gold Squadron was launched from the Argo in an attempt to distract him and lure him away from attacking citizens still evacuating the island's city. A squadron of U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets assisted the F-35As in attacking Rodan, but as Rodan began to pursue the Argo, he proceeded to use his abilities to destroy all the jets as he gave chase, including the entirety of Gold Squadron.

Additional F-35s took part in the final battle between the Titans in Boston.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Three F-35Cs intercepted Godzilla in Pensacola, Florida, as he attacked an Apex Cybernetics facility. The first two planes launched missiles at him, while he smacked the third out of the sky. He quickly destroyed the others with two blasts of atomic breath, the second exploding near a crowd of civilians fleeing from Godzilla. Numerous F-35C Lightning II jets of the U.S. Navy were also caught in the crossfire between Godzilla and Kong's battle in the Tasman Sea, where they attempted to fire on Godzilla. However, Godzilla downed almost all of the aircraft and destroyed many more that were parked when he climbed aboard the deck of an aircraft carrier to fight Kong hand-to-hand. During the fight, Kong picked up one of the jets with a pilot who had just climbed inside, before hurling it at Godzilla's head. The pilot managed to eject in time, but the impromptu projectile did little to slow Godzilla's advance. Moments later, other jets spared Kong from a point-blank blast of Godzilla's atomic breath with a barrage of missiles, distracting the Titan.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Three F-35Cs and a number of F/A-18 Hornets of the US Navy tracked Godzilla as he moved through the Spanish city of Cádiz and headed out to sea.

Godzilla Singular Point

"Tigerish"

A pair of Japanese F-35As were deployed to intercept an unknown object flying high above the air. Upon arriving, the pilots discovered that the object was a Rodan and soon observed a horde of the creatures flying below.

"Erumpent"

Two JASDF F-35As dropped bombs on Godzilla Amphibia's cocoon. The bombs exploded on impact, causing Red Dust to spread. Through the cloud of smoke and dust, Godzilla Terrestris emerged and roared, enveloping the surrounding area in Archetype. Later, another F-35A codenamed "Glory 01" dropped two bombs on Godzilla. The first bomb penetrated the monster's back before exploding, causing him to bleed and roar in pain. In response, Godzilla extended the blood from his wounds into multiple tentacle-like formations and caught the second bomb out of the air, smothering its explosion.

Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex

A trio of JASDF F-35As were sent to intercept Gigan Rex, the leader of the Gigan Miles causing havoc in Japan. All three aircraft opened fire, firing a pair of missiles each at the cybernetic kaiju. In response, a nearby Gigan Miles fired its laser, destroying the missiles before they could make contact. The Gigan Miles charged headfirst towards one of the F-35s, destroying it with a swipe before pursuing another of the aircraft. The second remaining F-35 maneuvered behind the kaiju and fired another pair of missiles, successfully hitting. Unfazed, the creature turned its head and shot its laser at the chasing F-35, destroying it. The last remaining fighter was then swiftly taken down by the claw of the Gigan Miles. Another pair of F-35As flew after it as more Gigan Miles battled Type 16 MCVs in the city below. One landed with an F-35 in its jaw, crushing the cockpit seconds after. A crashed F-35 was seen nose down in a pile of rubble.

Godzilla vs. Megalon

At night, three JASDF F-35As fired missiles at Godzilla as he marched through a city. The explosions in the distance caused a group of evacuating citizens to become anxious.

Capabilities

Armament

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II can be armed with air-to-air, air-to-surface, and anti-ship missiles, as well as multiple types of bombs. The eleven hardpoints on the fighter allow combinations of both types of weapons.[1]

In Godzilla Singular Point, a JASDF F-35A codenamed "Glory 01" dropped two LJDAM bombs on Godzilla Terrestris. The first bomb successfully penetrated Godzilla before exploding, causing the monster to bleed.

In Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, the JASDF F-35As fired AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles at a Gigan Miles, but the weapons were ineffective against the cyborg.

Speed

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II has a top speed of Mach 1.6 (1,228 mph, 1,976 km/h), with a range of 2,800 km (1,700 mi, 1,500 nmi) and a service ceiling of 15,000 m (50,000 ft).[1]

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan was able to keep up with the F-35As of Gold Squadron, destroying all of the fighters before battling King Ghidorah.

In Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, the Gigan Miles were fast enough to destroy JASDF F-35As, with one Gigan catching a jet in its mouth.
