The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is a class of guided-missile destroyers operated by the United States Navy. Introduced in 1991, the class is the Navy's most numerous warship, with over 76 built and 23 planned for service. Its first appearance in kaiju media was the 2014 Legendary Pictures Monsterverse film Godzilla.

History

Monsterverse

Godzilla (2014)

Three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers made their way to Honolulu, Hawaii in search of the male MUTO, alongside the USS Saratoga. This was until Godzilla surfaced right underneath the three destroyers, pushing them away with little effort as he continued his march towards the male MUTO. The following morning, at least one destroyer was a part of the carrier group led by Saratoga, following Godzilla as he made his way to San Francisco, though Godzilla quickly outpaced the vessels and was able to reach the city ahead of them.

During the evacuation of San Francisco, four more destroyers were stationed in San Francisco Bay at the Golden Gate Bridge alongside eight Ticonderoga-class cruisers and two Independence-class littoral combat ships. Godzilla approached the fleet, port-side of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, before stopping abruptly. The ships were ordered to hold their fire when, suddenly, Godzilla surfaced underneath the destroyers. Despite the fact civilians were still on the bridge, several of the ships fired their guns and missiles at Godzilla, with one missile striking one of the Golden Gate Bridge's main suspension cables. The military continued to attack Godzilla to no effect until the monster broke through the bridge and made his way ashore to fight the MUTOs.

Multiple Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, including USS Hopper, were a part of a U.S. Navy fleet that surrounded the Monarch installation at Castle Bravo after King Ghidorah awakened the sleeping Titans. At least three of them, including the USS Brody—a fictional member of the class—later engaged Rodan and King Ghidorah in Washington, D.C., sailing inside the city after it was flooded by a storm surge generated by King Ghidorah. At least four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers also took part in the evacuation of Boston.

Reiwa era

Shin Godzilla

At least one Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Huey, took part in Operation Yashiori, firing Tomahawk cruise missiles into a skyscraper overlooking Tokyo Station to collapse it on top of Godzilla and trap him in place, allowing the blood coagulant to be administered.

GAMERA -Rebirth-

"Under Current"

Following the Gyaos attack on Tokyo, General Raymond Osborn deployed an emergency naval brigade of four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers in Suruga Bay after listening to James Tazaki's suggestions for countermeasures. Later that day, a flying object suddenly appeared 3,000 feet above Suruga Bay, ascending rapidly. General Osborn ordered to contact General HQ to request interception, and soon the four warships fired up to 20 SM-2 missiles at Gamera. Gamera evaded many of the missiles, then utilized his electrical shockwave to destroy the final wave and disappear from radar. The kaiju was presumed dead until he reappeared in Tokyo again to fight Jiger.

"Run Silent, Run Deep"

Four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers were stationed at Yokosuka U.S. Naval Base, in the Eustace Foundation's private wharf, along with Serket, the Foundation's high-tech research vessel.

Elsewhere, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, 250 kilometers northwest of Isabela Island, Zigra attacked a cruise ship in the middle of a storm, coming up from beneath and jamming his pointed snout into the port side of the vessel. The monster was attacked by five Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, which fired torpedoes at him, but he avoided all the projectiles and launched his liquid shots at the ships. All five destroyers were sunk before Zigra swam away.

"KILL"

As Eustace Foundation workers extracted samples from Zigra's charred corpse, the ground started rumbling until Guiron leaped from below it, spinning and slicing an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer floating in the bay in half. The kaiju landed on each of the ship's halves, then quickly leaped again, killing all the Foundation workers before consuming the corpse of the deceased kaiju.

"Childhood's End"

The JSDF established a defense perimeter consisting of four Arleigh-Burke-class destroyers and dozens of Type 74 tanks to protect Gamera as he recovered from injuries sustained during his battle against Viras. The military engaged S-Gyaos, but the monster quickly destroyed the ships and tanks using its Ultrasonic Scalpel beams.

Trivia

  • In Shin Godzilla, the footage of the fictional USS Huey firing its Tomahawk cruise missile comes from a 2011 YouTube video taken aboard USS Stout.[2]
  • The fictional Arleigh Burke-Class destroyer "USS Brody" seen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters is likely named after the protagonist of Godzilla (2014), Lieutenant Ford Brody.
  • At the start of the scene where Madison Russell activates the ORCA at Fenway Park in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a Arleigh Burke-class can be spotted in the Charles River. In reality, it would be impossible for a ship of this class to reach this area of Boston, as several bridges are in the way which are too low for it to clear.
  • In Godzilla vs. Kong, a battleship taking part in the mission to transport Kong to Antarctica can be seen with the superstructure of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and the hull and armaments of an Iowa-class battleship. The exact class of this battleship is unknown.
  • GAMERA -Rebirth- is set in the summer of 1989. The first Arleigh Burke-class destroyer was not launched until September 16, 1989, making their appearance in the series an anachronism.[3]
