Keyaki (欅,   "Japanese Elm") was one of 18 Matsu-class escort destroyers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Completed in late 1944, little is known about her activities during the rest of the war. The ship was surrendered to the Allies at the end of the war and used to repatriate Japanese troops until 1947. Mid-year, the destroyer was turned over to the United States and was later sunk as a target. In an alternate universe explored in the 2023 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla Minus One, Keyaki was returned to Japan in 1947, albeit stripped of its weapons, and played a crucial role in the defeat of Godzilla during Operation Wada Tsumi.

History

Reiwa era

Godzilla Minus One

Following Godzilla's destructive raid on Tokyo's Ginza district, the Japanese government secured the return of four IJN destroyers as part of a desperate civilian-led plan to destroy the monster in Sagami Bay, dubbed Operation Wada Tsumi. At a dock near Sagami Bay, Keyaki and the other destroyers were prepared for the operation.

When Godzilla had arrived at the mainland faster than anticipated, Kenji Noda ordered the destroyers to set sail anyway, relying entirely on Koichi Shikishima, one of Noda's crewmates aboard the minesweeper Shinseimaru, to lead the monster out to sea. After Shikishima lured Godzilla to Sagami Bay in the Shinden, Captain Tatsuo Hotta in Yukikaze ordered Yūkaze and Keyaki to speed towards Godzilla. Unbeknownst to the monster, both were uncrewed. Godzilla expended his atomic breath on the harmless ships, leaving him unable to use it again while he regenerated from his self-inflicted wounds. This allowed Yukikaze and Hibiki to successfully execute the plan leading to Godzilla's defeat.

Capabilities

Armament

In its final configuration, Keyaki's armament consisted of three 127mm Type 89 dual purpose guns, twenty-five 25mm Type 96 anti aircraft guns, and four 610mm torpedo tubes. In real life, all of these weapons were removed from the ship after the war ended. In Godzilla Minus One, however, the Keyaki's main guns and quadruple torpedo launcher were retained, though like Yukikaze and Hibiki the main gun shield's blast bag and torpedo tubes were covered.
