The Ticonderoga-class cruiser is a class of guided-missile cruisers operated by the United States Navy since 1983. Originally planned as a destroyer class, the Ticonderoga-class was redesignated as a class of cruisers due to the Aegis Combat System's capabilities and the Ticonderoga's ability to serve multiple roles. The class appears in three of Legendary Pictures' Monsterverse films, beginning with Godzilla (2014).

History

Monsterverse

Godzilla (2014)

During the evacuation of San Francisco, eight Ticonderoga-class cruisers were stationed in San Francisco Bay at the Golden Gate Bridge alongside four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and two Independence-class littoral combat ships. Godzilla approached the fleet, port-side of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, before stopping abruptly. The ships were ordered to hold their fire when, suddenly, Godzilla surfaced underneath the destroyers. Despite the fact civilians were still on the bridge, several of the ships fired their guns and missiles at Godzilla, with one missile striking one of the Golden Gate Bridge's main suspension cables. The military continued to attack Godzilla to no effect until the monster broke through the bridge and made his way ashore to fight the MUTOs.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Several Ticonderoga-class cruisers engaging Godzilla

Several ships of this class, including USS Lake Champlain, were part of a convoy escorting Kong to the Hollow Earth entrance in Antarctica. When Godzilla intercepted and began attacking them in the Tasmian Sea, the ships engaged the Titan, his tail splitting one in half. After Kong was freed from his restraints, the ape Titan used another one of these ships as a makeshift stepping stone to reach a nearby aircraft carrier. Another cruiser dropped the depth charges that broke Godzilla's tail grip on Kong. The surviving ships powered down on Nathan Lind's recommendation, playing dead so Godzilla would believe he won the engagement.

This ship class has access to considerably more weapons.

Weapons

Guns

The Ticonderoga class is armed with two 127mm/54 Mark 45 cannons, 2 Phalanx CIWS, 2x 25mm Mark 38 machine gun system and 2-4 12.7mm M2 Browning Machine guns.

Missiles

The Ticonderoga class as shown in Godzilla vs. Kong are equipped with 122 Mark 41 VLS cells that can launch a variety of missiles, most notably the BGM-109 Tomahawk, and 8 × RGM-84 Harpoon missiles. The missiles were not used during the Tasman Sea battle.

Torpedoes

The Ticonderoga class had 6 324mm torpedo tubes in 2 launchers. They were left unused in any of the movies.

Depth charges

In Godzilla vs. Kong, the Ticonderoga-class cruisers that were part of Kong's escort group had depth charges mounted on both ends of the ships. These were likely based on the Hedgehog Anti-Submarine Mortars used between World War II and the Cold War.

Trivia

  • Almost every Ticonderoga-class cruiser in Godzilla vs. Kong bears a fictitious hull number (38, 39, 85, and 89). The real range of hull numbers for ships of this class is 47 to 73.[2] The only exception is USS Lake Champlain (CG-57), which can be seen in the background of Godzilla and Kong's fight atop a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
    • In a minor continuity error, the cruiser that Godzilla split in half bears the number 39; later, another intact ship is seen with the same hull number.
