Lockheed P-2 Neptune
|
The Lockheed P-2 Neptune was a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft developed for the United States Navy by Lockheed, introduced in March 1947 to replace the PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon. The aircraft appears in the 1958 Toho kaiju film Varan.
Development
A miniature of the Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune was built for the film along with an observation window seat set.[2]
History
Showa era
Varan
After Varan had glided toward the Pacific Ocean, the JSDF deployed multiple destroyers and aircraft to search and destroy Varan before it could reach the Japanese mainland. After Varan destroyed a small fishing boat, 3 Lockheed P2V-7 Neptunes of the JMSDF and multiple F-86 Sabres were deployed after the Ayanami-class destroyer Uranami reported Varan's coordinates. Once they found Varan, the planes began an aerial assault on the monster, diving and firing their rockets. Varan swiped at one of the Neptunes unsuccessfully, but when another Neptune approached, the monster rose out of the water and destroyed the aircraft. Varan submerged back into the ocean, with the destroyers beginning their assault.
Capabilities
Flight
The Lockheed P-2 Neptune had a maximum speed of 584 km/h (363 mph, 315kn), with a range of 3,471 km (2,157 m, 1,874 nmi) and a service ceiling of 6800 m (22,400 ft).[1]
Armament
The Lockheed P-2 Neptune was armed with 2.75 in (70 mm) FFAR rockets in removable wing-mounted pods and was capable of carrying 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) of bombs including free-fall bombs, depth charges, and torpedoes. The P2V-7 variant featured in Varan was equipped with a AN/APS-20 radar used for multiple purposes, including anti-submarine warfare.[1]
