The Kawasaki P-3C Orion is a maritime patrol aircraft manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, built under license as a Japanese-built variant of the American Lockheed P-3C Orion, and operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). It has appeared in several kaiju films, beginning with the 1984 Godzilla film The Return of Godzilla.

History

Heisei era

The Return of Godzilla

With Godzilla en-route to Japan, a P-3C Orion was tasked with locating him. The P-3C deployed sonobuoys to track Godzilla, but he was able to slip past the devices and make landfall near Ikata Nuclear Power Plant, attacking it to access its nuclear reactor.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Following the mysterious destruction of Baas Island and the emergence of Burning Godzilla in Hong Kong, a P-3C Orion was employed as a flying laboratory to locate and survey Godzilla from a distance. Assisted by a Hatsuyuki-class destroyer and a UH-1J Iroquois, the P-3C located Godzilla off the coast of Okinawa, and the plane's crew proceeded to use the instruments aboard to examine his condition, concluding that he was likely heading towards mainland Japan to seek out nuclear energy.

Millennium era

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS

After Godzilla destroyed an U.S. Navy Ohio-class submarine off the coast of Guam, it was predicted that he would make landfall in Japan next, and the JMSDF was scrambled to search for the kaiju. A P-3C Orion eventually spotted Godzilla, and coordinated the ensuing engagement, directing nearby Hatsuyuki-class destroyers to converge on Godzilla's location and engage him.
