M24 Chaffee Tank
|
The M24 Chaffee was an American light tank manufactured by Cadillac and Massey-Harris during the final years of World War II. Following the war, Japan purchased Chaffee tanks from the U.S. which were in service from 1952 to 1974. The tank is featured in Godzilla (1954) and multiple other kaiju movies, most prominently in those made prior to the introduction of the Japanese-built Type 61 Tank in 1961.

Showa era
Godzilla
After Godzilla appeared out of Tokyo Bay and attacked Tokyo's Shinigawa Station, the JSDF hastily constructed a line of 30-meter electric towers along the coast of Tokyo that would send 50,000 volts of electricity through Godzilla, should he arrive again. A blockade of 155mm Howitzer M1s and M24 Chaffee tanks were prepared along the fence line.
When night fell, Godzilla surfaced from Tokyo Bay again. Coming ashore in Shibaura ward, the monster easily broke through the giant electric fence, with no pain inflicted. The heavy machine gun fire and bombardment of artillery shells also had no effect. As Godzilla broke through the high-tension wires, he fired a stream of superheated radioactive vapor from his mouth to melt the electrical towers. Godzilla continued to move inland, reaching the heart of Tokyo and setting it ablaze with his atomic breath. The JSDF's 49th Tank Corps were deployed, and two Chaffees confronted the monster. They fired multiple rounds at Godzilla, causing the monster to turn his attention towards them. The tanks retreated when Godzilla stomped forward and fired his atomic breath, destroying one of the tanks and causing a fire to erupt and spread through Shibaura. Godzilla continued his raid well into the night before returning to the sea.
