Godzilla vs. Kong is an upcoming 2020 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures, and the fourth entry in the MonsterVerse. It will be released to American theaters on May 22, 2020.[1]

Description

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans' origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.[2]

Development

On October 14, 2015, it was officially announced that Legendary Pictures would be remaking King Kong vs. Godzilla.[3] The project had been rumored ever since Legendary acquired the rights to King Kong and announced Kong: Skull Island in 2014, and the rumors had become even more prominent after the project was moved from Universal Pictures to Warner Bros. On September 10, 2015, Legendary announced its plans to create a shared cinematic universe featuring both Godzilla and King Kong, as well as other giant monsters including Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Legendary's Godzilla was the first entry in this universe, followed by Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, culminating in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.

On May 10, 2016, The Wrap reported that Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong had been given new release dates of March 22, 2019 and May 29, 2020, respectively.[4]

On March 10, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that Legendary would be assembling a writers room to come up with the story for the film, comprised of Terry Rossio (who previously worked on the original version of TriStar's Godzilla film), Patrick McKay, J.D. Payne, Lindsey Beer, Cat Vasko, T.S. Nowlin, and J. Michael Straczynski.[5]

On May 3, Warner Bros. announced that it had moved the release date for Godzilla vs. Kong up a week from May 29, 2020 to May 22.[1] Adam Wingard finalized a deal to become the film's director on May 30.[6]

In an interview with ScreenCrush on August 18, Wingard described Godzilla vs. Kong as a "massive monster brawl movie." He said the film would contain "lots of monsters going crazy on each other" but also stated "at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it."[7]

On June 1, That Hashtag Show revealed that Deadpool 2 star Julian Dennison had been cast in the film in a supporting role, while Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler would both be reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The article also reported that Legendary had offered Frances McDormand a starring role in the film.[8] The following day, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed this report, save for the talks with McDormand, adding that Zhang Ziyi would be reprising her role from Godzilla: King of the Monsters as well, and that Van Marten would be joining the film's cast.[9] After The Hashtag Show claimed McDormand had been cast in July, her representatives denied her involvement.[10] That Hashtag Show later clarified in a retraction that McDormand was never in negotiations for a role and had passed on the film.[11]

Further casting announcements followed as the film neared the start of production: Brian Tyree Henry on October 10, Demián Bichir on October 17, Alexander Skarsgård on October 25, Eiza González and Rebecca Hall on October 30, Jessica Henwick on November 8, Shun Oguri on November 11, and Lance Reddick on November 14.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]

Production

Principal photography on Godzilla vs. Kong began on November 12, 2018 in Hawaii, under the title Apex.[20] The production wrapped in Hawaii on December 20 and resumed at Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, Australia, in the third week of January.[21] Outdoor shoots will take place at various Gold Coast locations.

What we have here is a rare opportunity for me to cut loose and show you just how powerful i really am

We waited all this time for an already crummy story! WHO CARES if some “human conspiracy” wipes out all the kaiju, just let the monsters fight! They’re already going for a Batman v Superman route. See people, this is why Freddy vs. Jason will be the best VS movie, because they FIGHT!

This is one of the reasons why I lose faith in movie-goers like you. You expect something that'll come later in a movie. Like a literal 30-minute fight after an hour. Give them a break dude, at least they have a plot which is a hard thing to come up with.

Yo, Destoroyah, don’t bother ”having faith” in me! I’m not even a movie-goer to begin with. I’m into stuff I have an interest in. And before you ask, yeah, I’ll still see GvK, but like KOTM, I’m only going to see it for the monster action, ‘cause the human subplots are insignificant.

And Astounding, no, I don’t expect the monsters to fight for two hours, I just want a good story and long enough fight scenes, not a piece of bland crap! (I’ll admit, I'm probably not the only one with these gripes)

@Conder99: What if that “Human Conspiracy” is a new monster they’ll create?! (don’t get me started on the Destoroyah theories, I’m f**king sick of them)

But still, I hope that it means it’s a bio-weapon that has NOTHING to do with making a creature. Kinda like that one episode in Godzilla: The Series that introduced El Gusano.

What if the movie goes like this: Kong is wandering around Skull Island when he finds footprints. He follows them and comes across another full grown Skullcrawler, except this one is dead. He continues on,wondering what killed it, when suddenly a Skullcrawler falls in front of him. Before he can do any thing, a female M.U.T.O. kills it. then, the MUTO goes after him for a full 10 seconds being slapped in the face by Godzilla, who then kills the MUTO. Godzilla and Kong then fight until there's an earthquake, opening an underground chamber, through which many Skullcrawlers come out and attack Godzilla and Kong. They do well until MUTOS start arriving eventually the fight ends up in Tokyo. Soon Mothra arrives and eventually they kill the Skullcrawlers and the M.U.T.O.s. Then Kong swims back to Skull Island, Mothra goes back to wherever she came from, Godzilla goes back to the ocean. Then there's an post-credits scene that shows Mechagodzilla being made. Even though this will never happen in a movie, I'd like to see it in a book or comic.

Well as it stands Godzilla is over three times Kong's height and Kong isn't even fully grown. Plus he has atomic breath and weighs hundreds of times more. Kong will need to mature and gain some spectacular abilities before he can hope to take on Godzilla one-on-one.

Ask yourself this: Who would win between Doctor Strange and Wolverine? That’s basically GvK in a nutshell (yes, I know they’re different characters, but it makes sense).

Also, consider the amount of radiation poisoning Kong would have to endure, since Big G is basically the Chernobyl Meltdown with legs. It doesn’t really matter about Adam Wingard’s description about the movie featuring a, “Rugged, a bit more aged Kong”, implying that Kong will be big enough to fight G. Sure, Kong is a thinking animal, but realistically speaking, consider the unhealthy amount of radiation he will absorb.

Well Mike Dougherty did tease the Oxygen Destroyer and according from Mike himself its part of the key plot and not just an Easter egg, but the movie is called Godzilla Vs Kong so I hope this doesn't turn out like Batman V Superman where they team up to fight a bigger foe. If another monster does appear then I hope it can be a 1v1v1 fight every monster for themselves

A new monster would be really cool, depending on how they make it. Since they did pretty well with the MUTOs and the Skull Crawlers I expect a deadly powerful monster. I wouldn't be surprised if it went like Batman V Superman because if one died it would really upset the fans of that monster. But there will most likely be a 1v1 I hoping Godzilla will come out on top

To be honest it isnt the director's fault, the screenwriters make the script and the director uses the script besides live action anime films never did so well in the first place. Also they are hiring directors that love and respect the Godzilla series, the reason 98 didn't do so well is because Roland saw all the films during that time and thought that they were trash. But to be honest the screenwriters make the story the directors use to direct the story
