Personality

Sumiko is a very motherly and homely person, unhesitatingly helping Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi raise the infant orphan, Akiko. She was angry at Koichi for not preforming his duty as a Kamikaze pilot.

After learning that Noriko was not Akiko's mother, she breastfed the child before giving Noriko and Koichi her "prized" bag of white rice to make rice gruel for Akiko. During such, she acknowledged the vitality of nutrition, proclaiming "adults can survive on anything" in addition to warning the duo about the chances of Akiko dying of malnutrition.

History

Godzilla Minus One

Prior to the on-screen events of the film, Sumiko's children were killed in the air raids on Tokyo. When her neighbor, Ensign and Kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima, returned alive, she was shocked in disbelief. Her shock would quickly turn to scorn as she berated him for not committing to his duty as Kamikaze pilot.

A few days later, after Koichi and Noriko Oishi came to her with Akiko lacking proper means to feed their adopted child, Sumiko gave them rice so that Akiko would not starve. In the time that followed, she continued to support Koichi and Noriko's family, becoming an aunt to Akiko.

In 1947, when Noriko got a job in the Ginza district of Tokyo, Sumiko looked after Akiko in her stead. After Noriko was presumed killed in Godzilla's attack on the Ginza district, Sumiko did what she could to comfort Akiko. Shikishima lent her financial aid to raise Akiko in his letter before taking part in Operation Wada Tsumi should he not make it back alive. During the Operation, Ota received a letter mentioning that Noriko was alive, and when Shikishima returned alive, she went to him with the letter urging him to go see Noriko.
