You're an Ultraman fan, right? Well, I'm a kid, and I'm looking to get into Ultraman. Can you recommend me a good, family-friendly place to start? The timeline confuses me...

Les (talkcontribs)

GN1 has been long MIA, my friend.

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

MIA? What does MIA mean?

Les (talkcontribs)

"Missing in action" - he's been away from the site for years.

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

That's a shame. Are you an Ultraman fan?

Les (talkcontribs)

Not really. I don't know very much to be able to give you a recommendation, but if you're looking for purely 'family friendly' be aware that some of the Showa series can get quite gory.

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

Oh, I'm aware. I've seen clips, and they're very gory. Also, I'm not looking for anything purely family friendly, just nothing with strong language, sexual content, or realistic violence. I'll ask someone else on this site.

I've already checked that. It's very vague. Sadly, IMDb doesn't have any parents guides for the Ultra Series.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

They're kids' shows. Granted, Japan and America sometimes have very different conceptions of what that means re:violence, but I've never seen anything in an Ultra Series episode that's gorier than, say, the recent Hollywood kaiju films.

My go-to show for people getting into Ultraman is Max. You'll laugh, you'll cry (I mean it), you'll see some extremely strange things, and you won't have to worry about continuity one bit. You can stream the English dub (it's one of the few shows that has one, at least for all the episodes) on Toku.

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

Thanks, I'll definitely check it out! But two more questions: do you have to pay for Toku, and do they have English subtitles? Because I prefer Anime and Tokusatsu series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

Yeah.

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

Dang it. There's no way I'm going to convince my parents to buy Toku! They already pay for Disney+, Amazon, and Hulu (Netflix is shared with a friend). Are there any other good places to start that you can buy on Amazon?

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

Mill Creek acquired the rights to pretty much the whole series last year and has been releasing them on Blu-ray at a furious rate. Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultraseven, Return of Ultraman, Ultraman Orb, and Ultraman Geed are out already, with Ultraman X coming later this month and Ultraman Ace coming in April.

Of the ones that are out, I'd say start with Orb. (Or Ultra Q... no Ultramen, but they're all basically half-hour Toho monster movies.)

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

Alright, I'll have to check those out along with the shows on Crunchyroll. Thanks!

UltraGoji (talkcontribs)

Also, should I just watch the shows in the order they came out, or is there a specific viewing order? Edit: Good news: I got the Mill Creek Ultraman Blu-Ray set. I'll start with that one.
