King Ghidorah (キングギドラ,   Kingu Gidora) is the name of at least two separate[1] three-headed dragon kaiju who appeared in the IDW Publishing comics Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth.

Name

Main article: King Ghidorah#Name.

The "Ghidorah" (ギドラ,   Gidora) part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ,   Hidora), which shares two of its three katakana characters with "Ghidorah."

Design

In Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, King Ghidorah was designed after the Millennium incarnation to reflect its role as a "guardian" beast awakened by a monk, though its eyes are completely red in contrast. Additionally, the numerous protruding textures are emphasized to evoke a more menacing image.

When this King Ghidorah returned in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, its design was changed to reflect the 1991 incarnation in order to accommodate its transformation into Mecha-King Ghidorah[1]. Its wings are depicted as having sustained great damage during its battle with Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, having been ripped to shreds.

The alien King Ghidorah that attacks the Cryog homeworld appears identical to the Showa King Ghidorah, befitting to its depiction as a malevolent space monster that destroys planets. In contrast, this individual possesses luminous orange eyes with red sclera, a wider upper body, a third prominent crescent-shaped horn in-between the other two horns on each head like with the Millennium incarnation, prominent manes and brow ridges, more flexible necks, the addition of a more saturated and yellow hide, and the middle and left heads possess tiny, pale yellow colored horns on their brow ridges.

Personality

The terrestrial King Ghidorah was awoken by a monk who intended on protecting those who had suffered at the hands of the giant monsters ravaging the world. Immediately after being awoken, the monster ventured directly to Godzilla's location to stop the beast. Even after Mechagodzilla entered the battle, King Ghidorah completely ignored the machine and exclusively attacked Godzilla, suggesting the monk's beliefs to be true that the three-headed dragon was indeed a guardian attempting to protect humanity from Godzilla's wrath.

The alien King Ghidorah was a prominently destructive being that laid waste to the Cryogs' homeworld before departing once it was satisfied with the resulting aftermath.

Origins

The original, terrestrial King Ghidorah was awoken by a monk in a temple deep within a mountain range in Asia, with its origins before that being unclear. As with other kaiju in the series, its emergence was preceded by the mass die-off of numerous animals, in this case snakes. After being turned into Mecha-King Ghidorah in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth and being freed from the control of the Cryog and Minette and Mallory, the monster fled into space, suggesting an extraterrestrial origin prior to being trapped in Asia.

The second alien King Ghidorah was a spacefaring monster that sought the destruction of other worlds very similar to the Showa King Ghidorah.

History

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters

In a temple deep within a mountain range in Asia, a monk reading ancient texts was suddenly disturbed by the appearance of a dying snake, which the monk took as a sign that the "Dragon King" was awakening. Venturing out through the mountains and encountering numerous snakes along the way, he soon located his destination – a temple built around a massive stone mountain bearing the resemblance of a three-headed dragon. Within the temple, the monk proceeded to sacrifice himself for those who have suffered, at which point the three-headed King Ghidorah burst forth from the stone, seemingly revived by the monk's sacrifice. King Ghidorah then flew across the globe to confront Godzilla as he was leveling Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, King Ghidorah struck first, using his Gravity Beams to send Godzilla flying backwards. However, Godzilla recovered and tackled King Ghidorah to the ground before blasting him with his atomic breath. The three-headed dragon retaliated by restraining Godzilla with two of his heads while firing a Gravity Beam point-blank with the third, though this did little but enrage his foe. In his fury, Godzilla unleashed an atomic beam so powerful that it left a mushroom cloud in its wake; when the dust settled, King Ghidorah was revealed to have been knocked unconscious.

Sometime later, King Ghidorah awoke to find Godzilla battling Mechagodzilla, piloted by Steven Woods. To Steven's surprise, King Ghidorah did not attack him and instead flew over Mechagodzilla to reengage Godzilla, prompting his copilot Allie to suggest that the dragon could be their ally. Unwilling to take a chance, however, Steven fired Mechagodzilla's shock anchors into both Godzilla and King Ghidorah, electrocuting them. As the monsters were being electrocuted, Steven also unleashed Mechagodzilla's most powerful weapon - the Plasma Grenade, which ultimately defeated both monsters and left them lying unconscious in the rubble.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

"King for a Day"

Some time after King Ghidorah's defeat at the hands of Mechagodzilla and Godzilla, the psychic twins Minette and Mallory brought Cryog leader Rhizon to the three-headed dragon's dormant and broken body. Wishing to revive the monster, Rhizon used Gigan to sever King Ghidorah's center head before outfitting him with a new mechanical head and additional mechanical parts to create Mecha-King Ghidorah. Following his eventual defeat, Mecha-King Ghidorah fled Earth and ventured into outer space, with the Cryog speculating that he was seeking out other members of his kind.

"Battlecry"

While speaking with Cryog Emperor Karkaro, Rhizon recalled how their home planet was attacked by another member of King Ghidorah's species[1] - one that proved far more powerful than the King Ghidorah of Earth. As this King Ghidorah laid waste to their homeworld, Emperor Karkaro fled, abandoning the rest of the Cryog civilization and leaving them to perish, though Rhizon was able to lead some survivors to safety before the entire planet was lost to the three-headed monstrosity.

But the designs are different because we had to use the '91 KG heads with the MKG design. As they said in the comic, there are multiple Ghidorah species. So the one that attacked the Cryog world was another of its kind". Tumblr.
