Phaneroplas (ファネロプラス,   Faneropurasu) are fungi-like Kaiju that appear in episodes 6 and 7 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8 titled "Sagamihara Neutralization Operation At Daybreak" and "Kaiju No. 9". They emerged in and terrorized Sagamihara City along with their progenitor, Mixogastero (ミクソガステロ,   Mikusogasutero). Mixogastero was eventually killed by Defense Force Captain Mina Ashiro, but another large swarm of Phaneroplas emerged from its carcass.

Name

In the original manga, the Yoju are known as Fungal-Type Kaiju (菌類系,   Kinrui-kei). While unnamed onscreen, they are named Phaneroplas (ファネロプラス,   Faneropurasu) on their character sheet,[1] likely derived from the similarly-named phanerogams, plants that reproduce via seeds. The Honju is listed as Mixogastero (ミクソガステロ,   Mikusogasutero),[1] named after Myxogastria, a class of slime molds.

Design

Mixogastero appears as a large, monstrous cluster of mushrooms with a dark coloration. The top of its head is gray in color with various clusters of red, glowing eyes, giving it some resemblance to the fungus species Hydnellum peckii, and a row of sharp teeth. Its body is dark gray and elongated, sporting three long, tree trunk-like legs on either side of it. Multiple mushrooms that resemble its main head protrude from its body and legs. Several root-like protrusions adorn its underbelly and legs.

The Phaneroplas appear to resemble their progenitor but feature deviations from it. Their heads are white with cracks and a smaller amount of eyes with a beige stump-like body. They have four pointed insectoid legs along with much smaller mushroom heads on their back. On these mushroom heads are bumpy reproductive organs.

History

Reiwa era

Kaiju No. 8

"Sagamihara Neuralization Operation At Daybreak"

Mina Ashiro explained that the Mixogastero was first spotted at Kannawa Fault, where it soon grew larger and emerged in Sagamihara City, having reached its breeding phase. Soon after, the Honju produced several Phaneroplas Yoju. Ashiro then devised a plan to kill the Kaiju in the area's Sector Echo.

As the Mixogastero roamed in the city, it produced spores from its head while several Phaneroplas emerged from a nest. The Yoju then arrived in Sector Echo, where they were promptly confronted by Defense Force officers. Assisting JSDF units fired several missiles at the Honju, but it remained unfazed. It then slowly began to walk forward before several more missiles were fired at it.

As Kafka Hibino approached a Phaneroplas, the Yoju proceeded to rush past him, knocking him away. The other officers fired at the attacking Yoju, with Kikoru Shinomiya quickly killing several of them with ease. In Sector F, more Defense Force officers fired at approaching Phaneroplas. Iharu Furuhashi shot two of them to death before Reno Ichikawa killed another with a freeze round ammunition.

At Secor J, one of the Yoju attempted to strike Aoi Kaguragi with its leg but missed. Kagurai proceeded to fire at the creature several times before it died. Haruichi Izumo fired at more of the Yoju but they proved too fast. Izumo then shot at a nearby metal pole, blocking the monsters' path before the former shot them to death. More of the soldiers then fired at the fungi creatures, killing them.

During the ongoing conflict, Kafka cut into one of the fallen Yoju's carcasses. He noted that, while the internal structure of the Yoju were standard, the cores were instead located in the creatures' necks. Kafka then tore out the monster's core, informing Soshiro Hoshina of its location and the hard, fibrous muscles shielding it. He also mentioned that the Yoju sported reproductive organs that would allow them to multiply unless they were destroyed.

After the Honju reached the neutralization point in Sector Bravo, Defense Force officers fired at its legs to no avail. Ashiro then readied her T-25101985 cannon and fired it at the Mixogastero, the blast piercing through the Honju's body. Its core now exposed, Ashiro fired again, destroying its upper body and killing it. The Honju's body fell over before Ashiro continued to fire at its deceased body, completely eradicating it.

As Kafka and Hoshina conversed, one of the Yoju leaped off a rooftop and landed behind the Hoshina. It prepared to attack him, but it was quickly killed and sliced apart by Hoshina's SW-2033 swords. A large swarm of Phaneroplas suddenly sprouted from the deceased Honju's carcass, rapidly approaching the Defense Force officers.

Ichikawa and Furuhashi later came across a mysterious person examining one of the Yoju's carcasses.

"Kaiju No. 9"

After the Mixogastero was killed, Tokuda Masahide viewed its carcass with other Monster Sweeper, Inc. crew members, remarking how large it was.

During Kaiju No. 9's battle with Ichikawa and Furuhashi, No. 9 built a large protective wall using Phaneroplas carcasses. No. 9 then tore through the wall, firing his finger projectiles at Ichikawa. During the ongoing battle between the Defense Force and the fungi Yoju, one of the carcasses briefly stirred, alerting an officer.

No. 9 later attempted to use the wall of Yoju bodies to protect himself against Kaiju No. 8, but the latter easily tore through them.

Abilities

Physical capabilities

The Phaneroplas primarily use their sharp legs for combat. One of the Yoju was able to knock away Kafka Hibino by slamming into him.

Durability

Phaneroplas Yoju are shown to be durable for their size, resisting most blasts from Defense Force officer rifles. Due to the placement of their cores in their neck area, weaker officers needed to target their sides in order for their rounds to penetrate the creatures' bodies.

The Mixogastero was shown to be extremely durable, being unfazed by several missiles that were fired at it, as well as Defense Force gunfire.

Asexual reproduction

The Phaneroplas possess bumpy reproductive organs that allow them to reproduce asexually, which can only be stopped via their destruction.

The Mixogastero was shown to produce spores from its head.

Weaknesses

Phaneroplas are able to be killed when their cores are destroyed. Gunfire from Defense Force rifles is able to tear open their bodies albeit with varying difficulty.

The Mixogastero was easily killed by blasts of Mina Ashiro's T-25101985 cannon, with its core being exposed after a second shot.
