Preondactyl (プレオンダクティル Pureondakutiru) are a species of wyvern-like Kaiju that first appeared in episode 8 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8 titled "Welcome to the Defense Force".
Typically a solitary species due to their prideful nature, they were gathered in large numbers and commanded to attack the Tachikawa Base of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force by Kaiju No. 10. After No. 10's defeat at the hands of Mina Ashiro, the Kaiju ordered the Preondactyls to group together and create a large Yoju bomb out of themselves, which was then knocked away by Kaiju No. 8 and exploded far from the base.
Name
Their names are not spoken in the original manga or in the series, and are only referred to by characters as Wyvern-type Kaiju (翼竜系 Yokuryū-kei). They are given the name Preondactyl (プレオンダクティル Pureondakutiru), which appears to be derived from the similarly named Preondactylus, a species of long-tailed pterosaur.
Design
Preondactyls are draconic creatures resembling pterosaurs. Their bodies are a dark bluish-gray color with a beige-colored head. They have large spines running down their backs and possess two large bat-like wings with a protruding thumb-like claw. Their heads feature toothed bird-like beaks and three small, red glowing eyes, as well as a large curved horn that fades into an orange color. They have large, curved, and pointed tails. Their legs are avian in shape with two toes and sickle claws resembling those of dromaeosaurs.

"Welcome to the Defense Force"
After the Sagamihara Neutralization Operation at Daybreak, several Preondactyls flew above and began approaching the Defense Force's Tachikawawa Base. Kaiju No. 10, riding atop a Preondactyl, ordered the creatures to begin their descent.
"Raid on Tachikawa Base"
The Preondactyls fired several beams of energy, destroying several parts of the Tachikawa Base. Konomo Okonogi read the invading Kaiju's vitals, noting that many of them were Honju class. One Preondactyl crash-landed in the Defense Force's warehouse. It charged up and fired an energy blast, destroying a wall before it flew out into the open.
Kafka Hibino watched as several Preondactyls flew over the base. He soon contacted Soshiro Hoshina, who commanded the Defense Force soldiers to lure the Kaiju into the base's center and shoot them down. Kafka told Hoshina about the strangeness of seeing so many Preondactyls together due to the creature's prideful nature rendering them a solitary species. Hoshina agreed, concluding that there must have been a threat powerful enough to have them swallow their pride. Hoshina turned to see Kaiju No. 10 along with two Preondactyls approaching him and his platoon. Hoshina then ordered Ryu Ikaruga to command the battle against the Yoju and to keep the monsters away from civilians. Kaiju No. 10 attacked Hoshina, before roaring out to the Preondactyls, giving them orders.
Ikaruga and his platoon fired at a Preondactyl, only for the creature to remain unharmed. The Preondactyl then fired its energy beam at the soldiers, narrowly missing them. Kafka contacted Ikaruga and told him that the Yoju's weaknesses were on their backs and that the skin on their fronts was too thick to be shot through. He mentioned the cores being located on the creatures' backs and that the skin protecting it was thin to keep their weight down in flight.
Another Preondactyl fired its beam at Haruichi Izumo and Aoi Kaguragi as they hid behind a Defense Force vehicle. The two then charged at the monster as it crashed down onto the ground, roaring. Kaguragi fired at the Preondactyl from the front, distracting it, while Izumo leaped onto a building behind the monster and fully unleashed his combat power. He took aim at the Kaiju before suddenly being attacked by another Preondactyl bursting through the building. The Yoju fired its beam at Izumo but missed. Izumo landed and took notice of the Kaiju working together.
The Defense Force officers struggled to get behind the monsters before Kikoru Shinomiya suddenly interjected, making mention of another way to kill the Kaiju. Kikoru suddenly ran out onto the battlefield and leaped at a Preondactyl. She swung her personal axe weapon labeled "AX-0112", splitting the Yoju open before it fell to the ground, dead. She then proposed the idea of using her own powerful strength to smash through the Preondactyl's front armor. A nearby Yoju fired its beam at Kikoru, only for her to jump up into the air and bring down her axe onto it, releasing a shockwave from the weapon and killing it. Another Preondactyl charged at Kikoru, which she managed to dodge. She then used her AX-0112 axe to release another shockwave, bursting the monster's body. Another of the monsters began to approach Kikoru and fly towards her but was shot down by Reno Ichikawa's freeze rounds. The creature roared at Ichikawa before he fired more freeze bullets at it, distracting it. Kikoru then took the opportunity and swiftly sliced the Yoju's head off.
A Preondactyl cornered and roared at Akari Minase, then began charging up its energy beam. It fired its beam at Minase, but she was suddenly saved by Kafka, who had transformed his legs in order to arrive in time. The Preondactyl turned to Kafka and charged its beam again, but was knocked away by Kikoru's axe, killing it. Ichikawa and two other officers fired at a Preondactyl as Kikoru slashed at another one. Suddenly, Tae Nakanoshima and Ebina's platoons arrived and fought off the monsters. Okonogi mentioned that Kikoru's team and Agatsuma's platoon had successfully killed two Yoju. Takao's platoon soon arrived, with Takao stating that they will use freeze rounds against the Yoju.
"Secret Revealed"
During Soshiro Hoshina's fight with the now-giant Kaiju No. 10, the latter ordered two Preondactyls to attack him, missing and exploding their bodies. Several more Yoju flew at Hoshina and exploded in a self-destruct attack, narrowly missing him.
Another Preondactyl attempted to attack Mina Ashiro, but it was shot down by Nakanoshima and her platoon before exploding. Several other of the Yoju flew by and exploded as well. During the ongoing battle, Kafka shot at a Preondactyl before running off.
After Kaiju No. 10's defeat, Mina's tiger Bakko sensed something was off before turning to the sky and roaring, alerting the other Defense Force members. The soldiers looked up to see a large bomb made up of Preondactyls fused together. A Yoju landed on the bomb and prompty fused itself with it. Hoshina soon realized that No. 10's "death rattle" was actually him ordering the Yoju to create the bomb. Okonogi announced that the bomb's energy levels were rising and that its estimated blast impact was equivalent to 20 kilotons of TNT, the same as an atomic bomb. Several officers then fired at the Yoju hovering below the bomb before one of the bullets struck it, causing a small explosion.
After Kafka transformed into Kaiju No. 8 in front of the other Defense Force members, he roared out and began charging up his energy. He morphed his elbows and legs to sprout exhaust pipes, firing energy from them. He then burst into the sky and flew towards the Yoju bomb. Kaiju No. 8 landed a powerful and devastating punch to the bomb, sending it flying farther up into the sky, causing a massive explosion.
Abilities
Flight
Preondactyls are expert fliers, capable of flying over large distances and maneuvering through the air easily with their wings.
Durability
They possess great durability, being unfazed by regular burst rounds and having armor-like skin on their fronts.
Energy beam
Preondactyls are able to fire black and red beams of energy from their mouths. These beams are capable of decimating anything in their path and causing explosions. A blast from a Preondactly's beam was able to explode an entire building.
Self-destruction
Preondactyls can self-destruct their bodies as an offensive attack by exploding.
Combination
The Preondactyls can combine together to create a large bomb out of their bodies. This bomb is stated to be equal to 20 kilotons of TNT in blast impact, the same amount as a nuclear bomb.
Weaknesses
Despite being very durable, Preondactyls have extremely thin backs that can be penetrated easily with regular burst round bullets. They were shown to be incapacitated by freeze round bullets and many were easily dispatched by Kikoru Shinomiya's AX-0112 axe.
