Primigenius (プリミジニウス Purimijiniusu) are cattle-like Kaiju that appear in episode 3 and 4 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8, titled "Revenge Match" and "Fortitude 9.8" respectively.
They emerged in and attacked Hachioji, causing sixteen fatalities. However, they were then captured by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force and relocated to the organization's Tachikawa Base to be used as training targets for the Secondary Selection exam. After Kikoru Shinomiya dispatched them all, they were briefly resurrected by Kaiju No. 9 before the Honju was eliminated by Kaiju No. 8. Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina later neutralized the remaining Yoju.
Name
Their names are not spoken in the original manga or in the series, but their visual sheets refer to the Honju as Primigenius (プリミジニウス Purimijiniusu) and the Yoju as Primigenius Yoju (プリミジニウス 余獣 Purimijiniusu-yo-jū).[1] They appear to be named after the species name of the aurochs, an extinct ancestor of modern cattle. The Yoju have an additional "beast" added to their names.
Design
The Primigenius Honju resembles cattle. Its body is humanoid and brown in color, with golden plates and several sharp spines running down its back. Its head features two brown, pointed, horns that gradually fade into a gold color, along with two stumps where its uniorgan would be as well as a lack of eyes. Its mouth has flat human-like teeth and a purple tongue, with a red marking around it. The Primigenius Honju has a long tail and hooved feet. Its arms are muscular and possess humanoid hands with each of its fingers possessing a single hoof.
The Primigenius Beasts resemble their progenitor but with some differences. Their bodies are white with a red marking on their faces. They have two rows of golden spines protruding from their back and their heads are elongated, ending in a point.
After being revived by Kaiju No. 9, both the Honju and Yoju retain their various bodily injuries from previously having been killed. Most notably, the Honju's intestines are visible. The monsters' coloration also changes, with the Honju's skin becoming purple with red horns and spines, and the Yoju's skin becoming green with blue markings around their mouths. The Honju later regrows its uniorgan which resembles a set of curved, spiked horns.

"Revenge Match"
After Soshiro Hoshina explained the next challenge for the Secondary Selection Exam, the Primigenius Honju charged at him, only to be stopped by a metallic barrier. The Honju roared as it attempted to reach Hoshina.
Before the test began, Hoshina explained that the Primigenius were the examinees' targets. He mentioned that the Kaiju caused sixteen fatalities the previous year in Hachioji. After the exam began, a Primigenius Beast noticed Kikoru Shinomiya approaching it, who proceeded to shoot it to death. Another of the Yoju attempted to attack two examinees but was killed by Kikoru.
Haruichi Izumo fired at a Primigenius Yoju's back, but the monster was unfazed, turning to him and roaring. As Izumo, Aoi Kaguragi, and another participant continued to fire at the creature, Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa arrived to assist the three examinees. The Yoju raised its hand, showing off its hooved fingers, causing Kafka to remember when he cleaned up the remains of this type of Kaiju. Kakfa ran at the Yoju and threw his stun grenade at it. The monster roared in pain and was left incapacitated. Kafka explained to Ichikawa that the monsters have weak eyesight, but good hearing, which is intercepted by the stun grenade's blasts. Kafka then shouted at Izumo and Kaguragi to aim at the monster's stomach. The creature roared at them and they shot at its stomach, rupturing its body and killing it.
As Kafka and Ichikawa ran through the area, another Primigenius Yoju suddenly burst through the debris and slammed its hand against the former, launching him at a nearby wall. The Yoju approached Kafka and opened its jaws, ready to consume him. It roared before it was shot dead by Kikoru.
"Fortitude 9.8"
Several examinees fired at a Yoju, but it was killed by Kikoru Shinomiya. Kikoru continued her assault, killing two more of the Yoju. She then ran and grabbed a metal pole, which she used to decapitate a nearby Yoju. She planted the pole on the ground and used it to knock away the final Primigenius Yoju, killing it. She finally reached the Primigenius Honju and threw a grenade at it, injuring it. The monster flailed about before Kikoru landed between its jaws and fired down its throat, rupturing its stomach. The deceased Honju then crashed down onto the ground, seemingly ending its reign. All of a sudden, a mysterious Kaiju appeared and fired a shot from its finger at Kikoru, briefly incapacitating her.
Suddenly, all the fallen Yoju's carcasses began to reanimate. The mysterious Kaiju began to pet the deceased Honju, slowly reviving it. After reviving the Honju, the Kaiju fired several more shots at Kikoru before leaving, weakening her. As the Defense Force began to pick up the Yoju's vitals once again, the Honju roared at Kikoru. Kikoru attempted to fire at it, but the creature swatted her away. It then regrew its severed uniorgan, allowing it to fire blasts of energy. The monster charged up a blast, then fired it at Kikoru, but it was blocked by Kafka Hibino, now shifting into his Kaiju form.
Several examinees fled to nearby shelters while Iharu Furuhashi and Haruichi Izumo fired at the Yoju. Reno Ichikawa reminisces on the moment he and Kafka first saw the Yoju reanimate, to which the latter left to go save Kikoru. As Kaiju No. 8 hysterically begged Kikoru not to tell the Defense Force of his secret, the Primigenius Honju charged up another blast and fired it. Kaiju No. 8 deflected the blast and began to charge up a punch. The Honju threw a punch at No. 8, which he blocked with his own charged punch. Proving much more powerful, No. 8's punch obliterated the Honju, its severed legs left standing and its organs falling down from the air. A rain of the monster's blood poured down onto the ground below. The monster's carcass began to regenerate, but failed, leaving it dead for good. Suddenly, a Yoju appeared behind Kikoru and tried to attack her, but it was quickly and gracefully killed by No. 8.
After all of the examinees were evacuated, Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina arrived on the scene of the Honju's demise. Hoshina noted the similarities between the Primigenius' remains and those of the Trichonephila's from three months prior, wondering if the two events are somehow linked. Ashiro then ordered that investigation and disposal units be brought in to examine the remains while she and Hoshina kill the remaining Yoju.
Abilities
Physical capabilities
The Primigenius primarily use their hooved hands for combat. A single strike from them is enough to send humans flying. The Primigenius Honju is also able to fire a punch powerful enough to clash with those of Kaiju No. 8.
Energy blasts
The Primigenius Honju can fire electrical blasts of energy from horn-like protrusions known as a "uniorgan". Though they did not hit the Honju's intended target, these blasts were capable of causing a large explosion.
Weaknesses
Like all Kaiju, the Primigenius' cores can be destroyed. They lack eyes, rendering them blind. As such, they rely on their extremely sensitive hearing, making them weak to blasts from stun grenades, which injure them and leave them incapacitated for some time. The Yoju's stomachs are less durable than the rest of their body, and they were fatally injured by shots from Kikoru Shinomiya's rifle.
