Abilities
The abilities of each incarnation of Mechagodzilla vary greatly. This section will attempt to document some of the common abilities of multiple incarnations. To see more specific information on Mechagodzilla's abilities, please refer to each incarnation's individual page.
Beam weapons
Each version of Mechagodzilla possesses some form of beam-based weapon, often designed to mimic or counter Godzilla's atomic breath. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla fires a yellow beam from its mouth while in its Fake Godzilla disguise which is powerful enough to destroy large swaths of a port area in Tokyo. After shedding this disguise, Mechagodzilla's primary beam weapon is the rainbow-colored Space Beam (スペースビーム it fires from its eyes. The Space Beam is powerful enough to destroy most objects instantaneously and is capable of injuring Godzilla. It is also roughly equal in power to Godzilla's atomic breath, Supēsu Bīmu)colliding with it in midair for several seconds before exploding. The rebuilt Mechagodzilla 2 in Terror of Mechagodzilla retains the Space Beam but now has a Laser Firing Apparatus (レーザー発射装置 on its "back-up" Head Controller Rēzā Hassha Sōchi) (ヘッドコントローラー, Heddo Contorōrā)[1] which it utilized after its head was removed by Godzilla.[2] In addition to these beams, Mechagodzilla could fire a powerful electromagnetic beam called the Cross Attack Beam (クロスアタックビーム from a shutter on its chest. Kurosu Atakku Bīmu)
In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mechagodzilla's primary beam weapon is the Mega Buster, a rainbow-colored beam fired from its mouth. The Mega Buster is equal in power to Godzilla's standard atomic breath, but is prone to overheating and thus can only be fired continuously for a short period of time. Mechagodzilla also possesses twin yellow Laser Cannons (レーザーキャノン which it fires from its eyes. The Heisei Mechagodzilla's most powerful beam weapon is the Plasma Grenade Rēzā Kyanon) (プラズマ・グレネイド, a concentrated beam of superheated plasma fired from a port on its stomach, powered by beam attacks from other monsters which it absorbs through its synthetic diamond-coated armor. After merging with the Purazuma Gureneido)Garuda to become Super Mechagodzilla, the machine gains access to one more beam weapon: the powerful long-range High Power Maser Beam Cannons (ハイパワーメーサービームキャノン. Hai Pawā Mēsā Bīmu Kyanon)
In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, Kiryu's primary beam weapon is the Type-99 Double Maser Cannon (99式2連装メーサー砲 or Twin Maser Cannon 99-Shiki 2 Rensō Mēsā-hō) (ツインメーサー砲 mounted inside his mouth. In Tokyo SOS, his chest-mounted Absolute Zero Cannon is replaced by the Type-4 Triple Hyper Maser Cannon Tsuin Mēsā-hō) (4式3連装ハイパーメーサー砲. 4-Shiki 3 Rensō Haipā Mēsā-hō)
In the GODZILLA anime trilogy, Bilusaludo engineers designed Mechagodzilla with a Convergent Neutron Cannon (収束中性子砲, a charged particle gun composed of a special gun barrel and a generator located inside its head. Mechagodzilla's head would have deformed when firing the weapon, which possessed an effective range of over five kilometers and would allow Mechagodzilla to approach Godzilla safely. Shūsoku Chūseishi-hō)
In ‘'Ready Player One Novel’' Mechagodzilla fires a mouth laser beam but in the Ready Player One film, Mechagodzilla fires a blue flamethrower-like weapon from its mouth, largely resembling Godzilla's atomic breath from the 2014 Hollywood film. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla's favored weapon is the red-colored A-74 Proton Scream (A-74プロトンスクリーム) which it fires from its mouth. The Proton Scream is incredibly powerful, as at merely 40% power it was sufficient to completely cleave a giant Skullcrawler in half. At full power, it can tear through buildings instantly and was able to overpower Godzilla's atomic breath in a beam clash and left a searing burn on his chest. In PUBG Mobile Mechagodzilla is able to fire the Proton Scream underwater, according to Jared Krichevsky Mechagodzilla could also fire another Proton Scream from it's tail like Shin Godzilla but went unused in the film.
Missiles and rockets

All incarnations of Mechagodzilla, with the sole exception of the version from the GODZILLA anime trilogy, possess missiles or rockets in their arsenal. The Showa Mechagodzilla in particular has a vast arsenal of missiles it can fire from several locations on its body. Primarily, it fires Finger Missiles (フィンガーミサイル that possess incredible destructive power and are continuously reloaded after each shot. In Terror of Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla 2 continuously rotates its hands when firing its Finger Missiles, granting them five times the destructive power of the original model's missiles. Fingā Misairu)[3] The Showa Mechagodzilla also is equipped with time-delayed missiles in its knees, referred to as Homyu Shot (ホーミューショット, and drilling missiles in its toes called High Pressure Homing missiles Hōmyū Shotto) (ハイプレッシャーホーミング. It has missiles mounted on the inside of its mouth, which it typically only fires in conjunction with all of its other armaments at the same time. The Showa Mechagodzilla has an apparatus mounted in its neck called the Trace Device Hai Puresshā Hōmingu) (トレイス装置, which allows for the firing of a large quantity of small missiles, though it never uses it onscreen. Toreisu Sōchi)
In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mechagodzilla fires Paralyzer Missiles (パラライズ・ミサイル from cells on its shoulders. It can load 60 Paralyzer Missiles at a single time. It used these missiles in its first battle with Godzilla to temporarily stun him before electrocuting him with its Shock Anchors. Mechagodzilla can also fire Tranquilizer Missiles Pararaizu Misairu) (トランキライザー・ミサイル laced with anesthetics and tranquilizers from ports on both of its hips. Super Mechagodzilla used these missiles to stun Godzilla before targeting and attacking his secondary brain with the G-Crusher. Torankiraizā Misairu)
Kiryu can fire large Type-87 680 mm Multiple Interlocking Rockets (87式多連装ロケット弾 or MRL 2 Mk. IV rockets from the front of the shoulder-mounted cannons on his Back Unit. In Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, these are replaced with improved Type-04 MRL 2 Mk. IV rockets. Kiryu's Back Unit is also equipped with small ballistic homing rockets which are fired from its sides. In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, these are Type-95 470 mm Multipurpose Guided Missiles 87-Shiki Tarensō Roketto-dan) (95式470mm多目的誘導弾, while in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS they are replaced by Type-98 320 mm Multipurpose Guided Missiles 95-Shiki 470 Emuemu Tamokuteki Yūdō-dan) (98式320ミリ多目的誘導弾. These rockets are capable of striking a target from long range or while Kiryu is in close-quarters combat. 98-Shiki 320-Miri Tamokuteki Yūdō-dan)
In Ready Player One, Mechagodzilla uses finger-mounted missiles much like the Showa incarnation. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla has two sixteen-cell missile launchers which rise from behind its shoulder pads. These missiles operate like cluster munitions, with each missile splitting apart into numerous smaller missiles before impact. It is also equipped with multiple hidden missile launchers; it deployed a concealed four-cell missile launcher in its shoulder to force Godzilla to release his grip on its arm, and has three more concealed four-cell missile launchers in its chest which it never utilizes onscreen.
Flight
Most versions of Mechagodzilla possess some flight or propulsion capability, though the extent of this ability varies. The Showa incarnation of Mechagodzilla possesses propulsion jets in its feet called Jet Fire (ジェットファイヤー, which enable flight at Mach 5. Jetto Faiyā)[4] Mechagodzilla can still use its weaponry when in midair, specifically its Space Beams, by aligning its head to face forward.
The Heisei Mechagodzilla can fly using built-in jets on its back at a speed of Mach 1. It typically uses this capability to cover large distances in order to confront its foes, but it can also perform a maneuver called the Hover Attack (ホバーアタック in which it uses its boosters to suspend itself off the ground and fire its weapons while circling its enemy. This maneuver allows Mechagodzilla to compensate for its lack of mobility on the ground and avoid close-range combat. After combining with the Garuda to become Super Mechagodzilla, its flight capabilities are enhanced thanks to the other craft's boosters, making its Hover Attack more effective. Hobā Atakku)
Kiryu is equipped with rocket boosters that can move and allow him to change direction quickly. While these boosters allow for limited flight, doing so depletes Kiryu's energy quickly and he uses this sparingly. He typically is transported through the air by a squadron of AC-3 White Herons which carry him using cables. When Kiryu does use his rocket boosters, he can use his momentum to ram opponents.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla has a set of six rocket boosters that fire out of openable ports by its dorsal fins. These boosters make Mechagodzilla more agile in close-quarters combat, helping it gain the upper hand against Godzilla. Designer Jared Krichevsky confirmed that there are also jets inside of Mechagodzilla's tail.[5]
Armor and defensive capabilities
In order to withstand Godzilla's powerful attacks in combat, all versions of Mechagodzilla are designed with incredibly durable armor and other defensive capabilities. The Showa Mechagodzilla is built from highly durable Space Titanium, an extraterrestrial alloy possessing ten times the strength of steel. It can also deploy a shield called the Defense Neo Barrier (ディフェンスネオバリヤー by rotating its head at high speed while firing beams from its eyes. This barrier deflected Godzilla's atomic breath and knocked him down when he tried to physically penetrate it. Difensu Neo Bariyā)
The Heisei Mechagodzilla is covered in an armor plating made from a synthetic alloy called NT-1, which is covered in an artificial Diamond Coating (ダイヤモンド・コーティング. This diamond coating is designed to render Godzilla's atomic breath completely harmless, as well as enable the mech to absorb its plasma energy in order to power its Plasma Grenade. While the Diamond Coating has a limit and begins to melt after being exposed to Godzilla's Daiyamondo Kōtingu)Fire Rodan-empowered nuclear pulse, its armor plating was still durable enough to withstand multiple hits from Godzilla's Uranium Atomic Heat Ray before it was destroyed.

In the GODZILLA anime trilogy, Mechagodzilla is composed of Nanometal, an autonomous living metal created by the Bilusaludo. Nanometal is able to deform and reform or become fluid and harden instantaneously, allowing Mechagodzilla to regenerate and adapt to any damage sustained in battle. Though it never had an opportunity to demonstrate these capabilities against Godzilla, enough of its Nanometal survived its body's destruction by Godzilla in 2046 to remain active over the ensuing 20,000 years. Its Nanometal gradually evolved and spread across the nearby area, all while following its directive to destroy Godzilla, constructing a weaponized replica of its development facility. Mechagodzilla could also spread Nanometal particles over a radius of 300 meters to defend itself from energy-based attacks and large projectiles, a feature designated the Nanometal Particle Diffusing-Type Thermal Energy Buffer Layer (ナノメタル粒子散布型熱エネルギー緩衝層. Mechagodzilla City was able to utilize this ability to defend itself from Nanometaru Ryūshi Sanpu-gata-netsu Enerugī Kanshō-sō)Godzilla Earth's atomic breath.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla's endoskeleton is composed of titanium and its body frame from T-1 Nanometal Skeleton Housing. This renders it highly resistant to damage, as it shows virtually no strain in its initial battle with Godzilla. Once Kong joined the battle, Mechagodzilla still demonstrated little to no damage from the combined attacks of both Titans, even withstanding numerous strikes from Kong's uncharged battle axe. Only once Kong's axe is charged by Godzilla's atomic breath does it become capable of damaging Mechagodzilla.
Artificial intelligence
Most versions of Mechagodzilla, despite being robotic, possess some degree of autonomy in battle. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla automatically carries out commands relayed verbally by the Black Hole Planet 3 Alien commander Kuronuma, and is able to make its own decisions in combat. It strategically attempts to keep both Godzilla and King Caesar at bay when they join forces against it. In Terror of Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla 2 is controlled by Katsura Mafune's organic brain tissue, which according to her father Dr. Shinzo Mafune renders it superior to the original model. So long as Katsura lives, Mechagodzilla is able to continue operating, even if she is not consciously controlling it.
In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mechagodzilla is controlled almost entirely by a team of G-Force pilots, though it still utilizes an artificial intelligence called REIKO. In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS, Kiryu is controlled using DNA computers which allow him to carry out autonomous subconscious motor function while responding to orders from his operators aboard the AC-3 White Herons. However, the presence of the first Godzilla's skeleton within Kiryu has on two occasions allowed the monster's dormant consciousness to completely override all control of the cyborg from his pilots.
In the GODZILLA anime trilogy, Mechagodzilla is equipped with a highly sophisticated Bilusaludo quantum computer and A.I. called Zalu-zi Type One Modified, which is itself supplied with a Gematron calculation algorithm and Godzilla combat data supplied by the A.I. Deinde. The combination of all of these algorithms and A.I. allows Mechagodzilla to form tactics in battle. After Mechagodzilla and its development facility were destroyed, its artificial intelligence block survived within its intact disembodied head and continued operating at half capacity for 20,000 years, carrying out its directive to "destroy Godzilla" by constructing Mechagodzilla City. Mulu-elu Galu-gu later remarks that the combination of Mechagodzilla's A.I. and the consciousness of the Bilusaludo who fused with its Nanometal is sufficient to allow Mechagodzilla City to make its own independent decisions.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla runs on an operating system called "Kuronuma Psionic v1.3," and is designed to be piloted mentally by Ren Serizawa through a neural interface built into one of King Ghidorah's skulls. However, the influx of energy from the Hollow Earth causes Ghidorah's dormant consciousness to merge with Mechagodzilla's A.I. and form a new malevolent consciousness that severs its connection to Serizawa before killing its creators and going berserk. Mechagodzilla is also stated to possess built-in learning algorithms.

Weaknesses
Despite its incredible power, each version of Mechagodzilla possesses at least one critical weakness.
In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla is controlled primarily through receivers on the sides of its head called Cybaneck, which receive commands from Kuronuma and allow it to navigate. When the Cybaneck are damaged following an explosion caused by its Space Beams colliding with Godzilla's atomic breath, Mechagodzilla is rendered almost completely inoperable and Kuronuma is forced to immediately recall it to the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens' base for repairs. Godzilla forcibly tears off Mechagodzilla's head in their next battle, which causes severe damage to its upper body and renders it inoperable. In Terror of Mechagodzilla, the aliens circumvent the first model's weaknesses by equipping Mechagodzilla 2 with a secondary head controller underneath its head and installing its control device within the cyborg girl Katsura Mafune. However, once Katsura commits suicide, Mechagodzilla can no longer move or attack and is easily destroyed by Godzilla.

The Heisei Mechagodzilla is designed for ranged combat, with its diamond-coated armor deflecting Godzilla's atomic breath and its numerous weapons keeping him at bay. Once Fire Rodan and later Godzilla close the distance in their battles against Mechagodzilla at Makuhari Bay, Mechagodzilla can do little to defend itself and suffers severe damage; with Rodan disabling its right eye with his beak and Godzilla lifting and throwing Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla's Mega Buster is prone to overheating and must be fired for short periods of time, resulting in the mech stalling and becoming immobile after a sustained beam lock with Godzilla's atomic breath. Mechagodzilla's diamond coating, while more than capable of absorbing Godzilla's standard atomic breath and Rodan's uranium heat ray, cannot withstand the intense heat emitted by Godzilla's nuclear pulse after he absorbs Rodan's life force and begins to melt. This renders Mechagodzilla vulnerable to Godzilla's uranium spiral heat ray, which obliterates it in a few hits.
Aside from his susceptibility to being possessed by the original Godzilla's spirit, Kiryu consumes energy quickly and can only run for approximately two hours at a time, with his flight abilities and use of the Absolute Zero Cannon depleting his energy reserves even more quickly. The transmitter which allows Kiryu to receive orders from his pilots can also be damaged by Godzilla's atomic breath, knocking him out of commission until he is either piloted manually or the transmitter is repaired.
In Ready Player One, Mechagodzilla is destroyed when its eye is shot out and a Madball grenade is thrown into its cockpit, killing Nolan Sorrento's avatar and triggering a chain reaction that causes the entire robot to explode.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla is temporarily stalled when Josh Valentine pours a flask of alcohol onto a control board, allowing Godzilla to power Kong's battle axe with his atomic breath. While Mechagodzilla was otherwise indestructible, Kong's charged axe was able to slice through its body and allowed Kong to cut off several appendages before tearing off its head. In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong Mechagodzilla's arms were torn off by Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl, Shazam and Supergirl before the Bat-Mech picks it up and snaps it's mechanical spine.
