— Kuronuma (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla) |
Kuronuma (黒沼) was the supreme commander of the first attempt by the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens to conquer Earth using Mechagodzilla in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. He was succeeded by the eerily identical-looking Mugal in the aliens' second attempt to invade the Earth.
Personality
Kuronuma exhibits a brutal, cocky, and overconfident personality. He has no regard for human life, and it is not below him to use extortion and intimidation to get what he needs. He also seems to be a decent commanding officer, as he knows when Mechagodzilla can no longer fight. Kuronuma is not the leader of the entire race of the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, he is only the leader of the invasion force. This is revealed when he acknowledges that headquarters will be very angry when they discover that Mechagodzilla is in need of repair.
History
Showa era
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
After Godzilla arrived to stop the fake Godzilla from destroying Tokyo, Kuronuma triggered the impostor to burn off its fake skin, revealing the machine, Mechagodzilla, underneath. After a brief battle, Godzilla was blown back into Tokyo Bay, and Mechagodzilla suffered damage to its Cybanek. Kuronuma then ordered his men to bring Mechagodzilla back to base for repairs, postponing the attack on Tokyo. Kuronuma planned to use a human with knowledge of space technology to assist them in the repairs. They captured Professor Hideto Miyajima, his daughter Ikuko, and Masahiko Shimizu at gunpoint, and brought them to their secret base. Kuronuma convinced Miyajima to help them repair Mechagodzilla, in exchange for his and the others' freedom. After complying, the professor demanded that Kuronuma release his daughter and Masahiko at once. Kuronuma assured Miyajima he would do so immediately, but tricked the professor and trapped him in the same chamber as the others. Kuronuma then released intense heat and steam into the chamber to slowly execute the three humans now that they had outlived their usefulness. However, they were rescued by Masahiko's brother Keisuke and INTERPOL agent Nanbara, who had infiltrated the aliens' base. As the group of humans fled, Nabara noticed the get away car was trip wired to explosives. The group was able to set the trap off and detonate the car out of harm's way. Kuronuma, watching the explosion on the monitor, assumed the humans had perished, and continued the operation.
After the humans successfully awakened the Okinawan guardian monster King Caesar, Kuromuma ordered Mechagodzilla to destroy him immediately. Nanbara, Masahiko, and Miyajima returned to the base to thwart the aliens' plans, but were immediately captured. Mechagodzilla gained the upper hand against King Caesar, until Godzilla arrived for a rematch against his robotic counterpart. Kuromuma then gave the order for Mechagodzilla to "beat Godzilla to death."
Kuronuma watched as Mechagodzilla unleashed its various weapons against the two kaiju. However, the tide turned once Godzilla began to generate a magnetic field from his body, pulling Mechagodzilla towards him. Kuromuma ordered an immediate retreat, but Godzilla and King Ceasar were able to pin Mechagodzilla and repeatedly attack him, causing massive damage. Godzilla finally tore off Mechagodzilla's head, destroying it.
Kuronuma, astonished that the magnificent machine has been defeated, failed to notice Nabara free himself from his handcuffs and sabotage the base's control console using Professor Miyajima's electrode pipe. Kuronuma attempted to open fire on Nanbara, but Nanbara used one of the other aliens as a human shield and forced him to fire his gun at Kuronuma's throat. Kuronuma bled out and collapsed to the ground, his human disguise vanishing and revealing the true green ape-like visage of his race.
