"The Last Blank Space on the Map" is the second episode of Skull Island. Directed by Julie Olsen and Amanda Sitareh B., it premiered on Netflix alongside the rest of the series on June 22, 2023.
Plot
Prior to their ill-fated expedition, Mike and Hiro purchase a map of Skull Island and the surrounding area from an ex-soldier who served on the Athena during Monarch's first visit to the island in 1973. He explains he drew the map from memory after his superiors ordered all official copies burned, and that the island contains "unnatural things" that killed many of his comrades. Outside, Mike wonders if Skull Island is what "she" is trying to find. Hiro responds that Mike has saved them if it is.
In the present, Mike numbly stares out at the ocean. He winces in pain from the wound the sea monster dealt him as Charlie wakes up. As Mike outlines plans to move inland and start a fire, a giant crab rises out of the sand behind Charlie. No sooner has he dodged its strike than another of the monsters grabs Mike and starts to drag him away. Charlie evades several more claws swung from under the sand to grab Mike, but the creature proves much stronger. Mike manages to break its grip with a kick, and the pair flee to a rock in the middle of the beach; once they are no longer touching the sand, the crabs lose interest.
Cap awakens elsewhere on the island. He begins to look for Charlie, but spots a fire first. As he moves towards it, the large rock behind him moves as well, then sits up to reveal a mammoth insect. Cap is briefly mesmerized by the gems in its stomach, then recoils when he sees its face. He is saved by the intervention of a mercenary, whose bullets bounce off the monster as it rushes towards him and eats him. Sated, it does not stir again. A woman who also witnessed the attack looks at it in shock before running off, and Cap gives chase.
Charlies prepares to throw a small rock on the sand to distract the crabs, but is startled when it opens up to reveal a younger version of the insect Cap encountered. It deftly avoids the crabs, who soon give up trying to catch it as Mike and Charlie try to reach the jungle. Cap catches up with the woman, named Irene, who confirms that her ship was destroyed by the same sea monster. She claims that she was on a cruise to Singapore, explaining the armed man as a precaution against pirates. They are awestruck by a giant turtle in their path who resembles a rock while sleeping and has aloe leaves growing out of its back. It wakes up but, unlike the insect, simply walks away from them.
A crab rises up beneath Mike and Charlie, knocking them both over, but Annie suddenly intervenes, spearing its claw. Mike realizes that her newly-found spear means there must be other people on the island. Annie charges fearlessly at the crabs with nothing but the snapped harpoon, but while the distraction allows Charlie to reach the treeline, Mike is left clinging to a crab’s claw. Charlie grabs the harpoon and throws it to Mike, who stabs the crab’s claw with it until it rises completely out of the sand. At the distant roar of an enormous creature in the distance, however, it and its fellows retreat under the sand. As they trek through the jungle, Annie divulges that the island she came from is different than this one. Mike breaks down, blaming himself for bringing them to Skull Island with the map he learned about. Charlie tries to comfort him, and when he turns around, he finds that Annie has vanished. Two more armed men emerge from the brush; one holds them at gunpoint.
Cap and Irene reach the fire, which has been lit by another armed group. Even before they address Irene as their boss, Cap has figured out her act, and that she’s looking for Annie. Meanwhile, Charlie questions why the mercenaries are so preoccupied with a girl on an island full of monsters. As they start to lose patience with him and Mike, Annie returns, harpooning one in the leg and nearly choking out the other with a vine. He throws her away and they both take aim, but are distracted by the approach of a dog-like creature who knocks them both aside. The beast then rushes towards a gleeful Annie and, to Charlie’s horror, throws her high into the air.

Trivia
- If taken literally, the ex-soldier's line about Monarch's expedition to Skull Island being 20 years ago would place the events of Skull Island in 1993, as Kong: Skull Island is set during 1973.
- The title of this episode is likely a reference to Carl Denham's description of Skull Island as "the last blank spot on the map" in King Kong (2005).
