Hawk Monster
|
The Hawk Monster is a giant avian monster who appears in the 2023 Netflix series Skull Island. It is a companion of Kong.
Name
The monster's name comes from PowerHouse Animation's model sheet.[1] Characters in Skull Island do not refer to the Hawk Monster by any specific name other than a bird or Big Bird, the latter likely in reference to the Sesame Street character of the same name. The creature was also called a hawk by the unnamed Skull Islander girl.
Design
The Hawk Monster is a giant avian creature with a long plumed tail that splits into several ends. It has a crest on its head, and its feathers are light red with dark red feathers on the tips of its wings, crest, and tail. It has piercing yellow eyes, a dark hooked beak, and orange feet with three sharp talons on each foot. Its body is robust and muscular, with large wings covered in layered feathers, and a tail composed of multiple pointed feathers that extend in a fan-like fashion.
The younger version of the Hawk Monster seen in "You're Not a King, You're Just a Stupid Animal" was smaller in size. The dark red feathers on its crest, wings, and tail were much shorter.
Personality
Despite its predatory behavior, the Hawk Monster shows a willingness to assist others when needed, serving as a reliable ally to Kong and a Skull Islander in their battle against Killer Chameleons. During the fight, it swooped in to rescue the Skull Islander from falling from a cliff to her death, even risking its own safety by approaching Killer Chameleons in the process. Earlier, it delivered to Kong a Grass Hedgehog to feed on. It displays a keen awareness of its surroundings, shown when it viewed Dog running through a field with Annie and reported to Kong about the corpse of a Sker Buffalo.
Origins
Though its origins are unknown, according to Brian Duffield, Kong likely encountered the Hawk Monster sometime in the 1980s.[2]
History
"What's Up, Croc?"
While Irene and her group of mercenaries were walking through a field in Skull Island, she noticed that the grass was being rustled by wind. Suddenly, the Hawk Monster flew by, causing the group to flee. One of the mercenaries was unable to escape due to his leg injury, causing him to be captured by the Hawk Monster. Irene's men tried to save him by shooting at the giant bird, but failed. Later that day, they saw the hawk resting on a mountain.
"Breakfast Fit for a Kong"
As the Hawk Monster was sitting on a mountain, it observed Dog as he was running through a field with Annie.
"Doggone It"
The Hawk Monster swooped down and caught Dog as he attempted to attack Irene, before taking the large canid to Kong's temple. Later, it also grabbed Charlie and brought him to Dog's location.
"You're Not a King, You're Just a Stupid Animal"
Years prior, a younger Hawk Monster grabbed a Grass Hedgehog and took it to Kong's temple, where the ape ate it. The Hawk Monster later discovered the carcass of a Sker Buffalo, alerting Kong and a Skull Island girl he had befriended to its location. The three then took off to find the monsters responsible for the buffalo's death. Eventually, they reached a canyon ledge, where three Killer Chameleons feasted on a monster's carcass.
During Kong's battle with the Killer Chameleons, the Skull Islander was knocked off the canyon ledge by one of the reptiles. As she fell, the Hawk Monster swooped down and caught her. As the hawk glided through the air, a chameleon leaped and grabbed onto its leg, then bit into it, causing it to screech out in pain. It then rolled in the air, making the Killer Chameleon lose its grip and fall. However, the chameleon launched its tongue at the islander and brought her down with it, much to the hawk's shock. As a pile of large rocks landed on Kong and the islander, the Hawk Monster looked on and called out for its two allies. Seeing the two emerge from the rubble, the hawk flew up, screeching victoriously.
After the Skull Islander and Kong's argument, the hawk perched itself on the ape's arm as the latter walked off.
