Green Ranger (Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II)

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord, also known as the Godzillazord, is a mecha that appeared in the 2024 IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios crossover comic series Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II. It is a giant mechanical robot that can be summoned by the Green Ranger of the Power Rangers, taking the place of the Dragonzord.

After Rita Repulsa and Astronema created the Kaiju Psycho Rangers by siphoning the energy of Godzilla's most powerful foes from across the Multiverse, the Power Rangers and their allies found themselves severely outmatched. In response, Goro Ibuki, Jet Jaguar, Zordon, Alpha 5, and the Elias helped create the Kaiju Power Coins, imbuing the Power Rangers with the powers and abilities of various kaiju from Godzilla's universe, including Godzilla himself. This resulted in the creation of the Kaiju Power Rangers, the Kaiju Zords, and the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord, which was separate from the other Kaiju Zords. The Green Ranger used the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord to attack the Dark Fortress before joining the Kaiju Megazord against the Kaiju Psycho Rangers.

Name

Tommy Oliver refers to the mech as a "Godzillazord" in the fourth issue. However, concept art reveals the machine's full name to be the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord.

Development

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord was designed by Freddie Williams II, the artist behind the first series. Series author Cullen Bunn contributed to the design process.[1]

Design

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord resembles a mechanical Godzilla, complete with dorsal fins on its back and a thick tail. Elements of the Dragonzord are incorporated into the design, especially with regards to its green, black, silver, and gold color scheme. While the head sports a more rounded shape almost identical to Godzilla himself, the body and limbs are much blockier by comparison.

Origins

Like the Kaiju Zords, the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord was created by combining Goro Ibuki's tech, Zordon's wizardry, and the Elias's magic to create the Kaiju Power Coins, which imbued the Power Rangers with the strength of kaiju from across the Multiverse, including Godzilla himself.

History

Issue #4

Following their failures to stop Rita Repulsa and Astronema from wreaking havoc across the Multiverse with the Kaiju Psycho Rangers, the Power Rangers and their allies decided to fight back by harnessing the energy of other kaiju found across the Multiverse and creating the Kaiju Power Coins, giving rise to the Kaiju Power Rangers and Kaiju Zords. The Green Ranger was infused with the powers of Godzilla himself, allowing him to summon the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord. While attempting to rescue kidnapped Power Rangers teams aboard the Dark Fortress, the Green Ranger summoned his Zord to serve as a distraction while White Ranger and Jet Jaguar rescued the others, promising to keep his destruction "focused".

Issue #5

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord continued to lay waste to Astromena's Dark Fortress with its ray while Jet Jaguar and the White Ranger led a successful rescue mission within the space station, fighting off foes before freeing the imprisoned Power Rangers teams. After Rita and Astromena retreated, the Green Ranger brought the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord back down to the Earth, crushing a couple of the Kaiju Psycho Rangers in the process while they were attacking the Kaiju Megazord. Reunited, the two Zords then released their excess kaiju energies using the Monster Storm ability, allowing the kaiju that created them to physically manifest in battle. The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord and Godzilla fired their respective beam weapons at Psycho Ranger Megalon and Psycho Ranger King Ghidorah, destroying them. The rest of the kaiju went on to defeat the remaining Kaiju Psycho Rangers, saving the Multiverse from certain doom.

Abilities

Energy Beam

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord can fire a blue laser that mimics Godzilla's atomic breath.

Physical Capabilities

After abandoning the Dark Fortress, the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord stomped on and crushed several Kaiju Psycho Rangers.

Durability

The Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord was able to burst out of the Dark Fortress without sustaining any damage when summoned. It was also able to operate in the vacuum of space without any difficulty.

Monster Storm

Like the Kaiju Megazord, the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord was able to expel the excess energy of the kaiju that created it - in this case Godzilla - allowing Godzilla to physically manifest during the battle against the Kaiju Psycho Rangers.

Trivia

  • By virtue of being a mechanical Godzilla, the Godzilla Zord naturally bears some similarities to Mechagodzilla.
  • Although the Dragonzord can combine with the Megazord to form the Mega Dragonzord, it is unknown if the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord has the same ability to combine with the Kaiju Megazord.
  • While the Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord's exact size is unknown, the machine is depicted as being roughly the same height as the Kaiju Megazord during the Monster Storm sequence and Godzilla when alongside the latter, indicating that it is significantly larger than the rest of the Kaiju Zords that make up the Kaiju Megazord.
