— Colonel Cameron (Godzilla #5)

The All-Terraintula is a giant spider mecha that first appeared in the 5th issue of Dark Horse's Godzilla comic series.

Launched in the wake of Cybersaur's defeat to Godzilla, the All-Terraintula proved to be rather effective against the King of the Monsters until the arrival of intergalactic hunters known as the Dianii thwarted the U.S. military's plans and briefly incapacitated the machine. The All-Terraintula was later reactivated after the military leaders responsible for its creation revealed themselves to be Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, who hoped to use the machine in their invasion of Earth until Godzilla swiftly put an end to their plans.

Name

The name All-Terraintula is a portmanteau of "all-terrain" (capable of travel on all types of ground) and tarantula. G-Force member Kino disparagingly refers to the machine as a "Mecha-Spider" upon its debut.

Design

The All-Terraintula resembles a mechanical spider with eight limbs. While almost entirely purple in color, the machine also features small yellow parts throughout the body, including yellow armor on the legs and three yellow "eyes" on its head.

On the cover of Godzilla #5, the All-Terraintula is depicted with a markedly different color scheme with a tan body, orange legs, and red eyes - a color scheme which is never reflected at any point within the interior pages.

Origins

The All-Terraintula was created by the United States military and launched into battle by Colonel Cameron, who, unbeknownst to anyone at the time of launch, was secretly a Black Hole Planet 3 Alien in disguise alongside the rest of his unit.

History

Godzilla

"Target: Godzilla! Part One"

The mighty robot Cybersaur had just been destroyed by an internal explosion, and G-Force members Take and Kino lamented about the loss of humanity's greatest defender. However, G-Force leader Dr. Kazushi Kagaku consoled them by telling them that another robot was already under construction.

After several hours, it was revealed by Colonel Cameron of the United States military just as Godzilla appeared in Washington; the All-Terraintula was a marvelous machine designed to resemble a titanic spider. The All-Terraintula proceeded to enter the city proper and use its energy beam to do some harm to the King of the Monsters. Godzilla, enraged at the smaller monster, unleashed the fury of his atomic breath on the All-Terraintula, but to his surprise, the robot merely absorbed the blast with no effort. Colonel Cameron revealed to G-Force that the All-Terraintula boasted "Anti-Godzilla Beam" plating which absorbed the energy of Godzilla's ray. The All-Terraintula pressed on with its merciless assault as it unleashed its Anti-Godzilla Cannon on the monster and used its agility to keep out of his reach. Unfortunately for the mechanized spider, Godzilla was able to outwit its pilots and slammed his tail into the machine, sending it crashing into a row of buildings; however, this set Godzilla up for the metallic spider's next attack. The All-Terraintula was able to strike Godzilla with a Super-Tranq of artificial curare and a super-dense cadmium compound, effectively robbing Godzilla of his atomic breath and drugging the creature. Unfortunately, before the mecha could press its advantage, the fight was interrupted by the arrival of the Dianii, gigantic intergalactic bounty hunters with the intent of making Godzilla their prey. They decided to remove the All-Terraintula from the picture and blasted the robot with their Mega-Zooka, sending it down in flames.

"Target: Godzilla! Part Two"

The All-Terraintula continued to burn while its pilots assessed the damage.

"Target: Godzilla! Part Four"

Much later, after the fight between Godzilla and the Dianii had moved to Portland, Oregon, the All-Terraintula was reactivated, its pilots and creators revealed to be aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole. Making its way to Portland, the All-Terraintula crept behind two Dianii warriors and vaporized the Dianii's leader with a single blast of its beam. Unfortunately, this enraged the young Dianii traveling with him, who turned and attacked the mecha with incredible fury, striking the mecha with the disembodied arm of his fallen captain. Grabbing hold of the machine, he spun it and tossed it, sending it flying into Godzilla's chest. Godzilla quickly took hold of the mecha, crushing its abdomen and rupturing its nuclear storage pods. A testament to Godzilla's unequaled strength, the All-Terraintula was destroyed, the ensuing nuclear explosion restoring Godzilla's full power.

Abilities

Energy beam

The All-Terraintula can fire an energy beam from the plating below its eyes. The beam is shown to be powerful enough to injure the King of the Monsters himself and vaporize smaller targets.

Armor plating

The All-Terraintula is covered with an "Anti-Godzilla Beam" plating that absorbs radioactive and kinetic energy which powers its Anti-Godzilla Cannon.

Anti-Godzilla Cannon

This weapon provides a more powerful blast from the network of plating below the All-Terraintula's eyes and is capable of knocking back opponents with ease.

Super-Tranq

The All-Terraintula has large tranquilizer missiles containing both artificial curare and a super-dense cadmium compound; perfect for neutralizing and drugging radiation-based monsters such as Godzilla.

Trivia

  • The All-Terraintula's size varies throughout the storyline; while initially large enough to pose a great threat to Godzilla, it appears much smaller in its final scene, where is it easily held within Godzilla's hands.
  • The All-Terraintula was used by the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, who famously created another machine in their debut film - Mechagodzilla. Colonel Cameron paraphrases dialogue from the English dub of that film when taunting Godzilla during the Monster King's battle against the mech.
