A demonic doppelganger of Godzilla appears in the first issue of the 2015 IDW comic series Godzilla in Hell. Posing as another of Godzilla's species, the demon lured in the King of the Monsters before unveiling its true form and attempting to consume him. Godzilla ultimately obliterated it with a nuclear pulse.
Name
The creature is not named in the comic. "Doppelganger demon" is used here as a descriptive phrase given that it impersonated Godzilla.
Origins
The Doppelganger has no given history or explanation behind its existence, other than being a denizen of Hell.
Personality
The Doppelganger demon's sole motive was to consume Godzilla. It stood frozen in place prior to Godzilla noticing it after fighting a soul storm, only revealing its true colors when he was within easy grappling range. In its eagerness to consume him, it attempted to drag him towards its mouth while he was still in fighting shape, leaving itself vulnerable to a fatal nuclear pulse.
Design
When in its disguised form, the doppelganger demon is generally identical to Godzilla, although it is covered in multiple scars and wounds and possesses a reddish tint to its skin. Two scars run down the side of its hip, with one larger and more visible than the other. Another scar is seen on its heart region on its chest. A larger, more complex scar resides on the other side of the demon's chest. Its face is covered in three scars, one of which goes down from the side of its snout to its nose to the edge of its upper jaw. The other two facial scars start from the demon's brow ridge, the first one ending at the mouth and the second one reaching the jawline. Its eyes are red, its dorsal plates are comparatively slanted and slightly longer than Godzilla's, and the demon stands slightly taller than Godzilla. When the King of the Monsters closed the distance to inspect it up close, the demon split its skin open and revealed its true form: an enormous beast with massive jaws, a single red eye, several sharp tendrils, and two long arthropod-like limbs. The demon keeps Godzilla's dorsal fins even in its true form. At its full mass, the doppelganger demon significantly dwarves Godzilla and its gaping mouth is filled with countless rows of sharp teeth arranged like that of a leech. The top of its head is composed of the face and the upper back of its Godzilla disguise form.
History
- Godzilla in Hell #1 (2015)
Godzilla in Hell #1
After wading into the eye of a storm cloud composed of damned souls in Hell itself, Godzilla toppled to the ground. As he got back up, he spotted a doppelganger of himself. It stood motionless, blankly staring into the distance. Godzilla approached his lookalike to inspect and sniff it, prompting the demon to unveil its true appearance. It unleashed its numerous tendrils at Godzilla, ensnaring him, lifting him into the air, and slamming him into the ground. As it repeated its attack, Godzilla severed the tendrils holding him with atomic breath, then delivered a flying body slam to the demon before pummeling its face with his fists. In retaliation, the doppelganger demon grabbed ahold of Godzilla with its long arthropod-like limbs and flung him backwards. It unveiled its enormous mouth as Godzilla recovered. Before he could react, the demon grabbed him with its tendrils again, dragging him towards its mouth. As Godzilla approaching the demon, his demeanor shifted and he charged forward, dorsal plates glowing blue. As the doppelgänger demon prepared to swallow Godzilla, it noticed energy building further in Godzilla's dorsal plates as their glow shifted from blue to orange. Godzilla proceeded to completely obliterate it from the inside out with a nuclear pulse. The doppelganger demon's grotesque remains rained down around Godzilla before the ground beneath him collapsed, sending him falling into another realm of Hell.
Abilities
Shapeshifting
The doppelganger demon can shapeshift, allowing it to pose as a visual replica of Godzilla or at least another of his species. Its disguise was sufficient to lure Godzilla into close range.
Physical abilities
The doppelganger demon is armed with sharp tendrils and large jaws. It was capable of lifting and throwing Godzilla, and proved strong enough to ensnare Godzilla in its tendrils before pulling him towards its gaping mouth.
Weaknesses
Godzilla's atomic breath severed the doppelganger demon's tendrils. It was ultimately killed by Godzilla's nuclear pulse, which he detonated while in the demon's mouth.

Trivia
- The doppelganger demon is comparable to Orga in the way that it took the form of Godzilla, attempted to swallow him, and was killed by his nuclear pulse from the inside out.
- The demon's true form is also a possible reference to the alien creature from John Carpenter's The Thing.
