Demon Rodan
|
The Demon Rodan is a giant demonic pterosaur-like kaiju who appears in the second issue of IDW Publishing's 2015 comic miniseries Godzilla in Hell. The Demon Rodan engaged the King of the Monsters in a fiery ruined realm in Hell, only to be swiftly defeated.
Name
The Demon Rodan's name simply comes from placing the word "demon", a word referring to malevolent entities often associated with Hell, in front of Rodan.
Design
The Demon Rodan's design closely resembles that of the Rodan pair which appeared in the character's 1956 debut film, although he has glowing, fire-colored, pupilless eyes.
Personality
Demon Rodan attacked Godzilla on sight, persisting even after narrowly avoiding a blast of atomic breath.
Origins
Narration in Godzilla in Hell #2 describes the Demon Rodan as one of the "lost, possessed effigies of great kaiju" who inhabit Hell. Unlike Demon Anguirus, he is not stated to have encountered Godzilla in life. The issue's official description states that Godzilla's opponents are "demonic versions of his greatest foes", suggesting they are demons imitating kaiju rather than demonically-possessed kaiju, although it also refers to a "city that can never be destroyed" which is not evident in the story.[1]
History
- Godzilla in Hell #2 (2015)
Godzilla in Hell #2
Godzilla's journey through Hell brought him to the abysmal plain of the underworld, a volcanic land of ruined cities. He soon spotted the Demon Rodan flying overhead, and the possessed kaiju moved to attack him. The Demon Rodan narrowly dodged a blast of atomic breath before retreating to the ash cloud of a nearby volcano to prepare for another drive. The monster flew at Godzilla once again, only to be felled by a swiped of his tail. The Demon Rodan crashed into one of the hellish cities below as Godzilla quickly advanced into an icy realm.
Abilities
Flight
The Demon Rodan is capable of flying at incredible speeds, proving fast enough to dodge a blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath.
Physical abilities
The Demon Rodan is armed with a beak full of teeth, a spiked chest, and sharp talons, though he was unable to mount a successful attack against Godzilla.
Weaknesses
The Demon Rodan was knocked down by a powerful blow from Godzilla's tail, tumbling down to the nearby ruined city in defeat.

Trivia
- Demon Rodan's association with a volcanic region may be a reference to Rodan's debut film, in which the Rodan couple emerged from and seemingly died on the volcano Mount Aso, as well as a Rodan's emergence from the volcano in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964).
- Demon Rodan is the only one of the three demon kaiju in issue 2 of Godzilla in Hell lacking a written representation of his roar, though King Ghidorah, who appears at the end of the issue, isn't given one either.
