— God-mountain (Godzilla in Hell) |
God-mountain is a massive heavenly being that appears in the third issue of IDW Publishing's 2015 comic series Godzilla in Hell. An organ-composed mountain-like deity that resides in a celestial realm, the God-mountain sought Godzilla's allegiance as a member of its forces in the the existential conflict between its realm and Hell. When it failed to force Godzilla's alliegance, it sent him down into Hell, where he reunited with SpaceGodzilla. As a second, more open attempt to sway Godzilla to its side, the God-mountain sent its army of angels to aid Godzilla in his fight against SpaceGodzilla and a horde of demons. Assuming that it had gained Godzilla as an ally, the God-mountain pleaded in shock as Godzilla sealed it off from Hell.
Name
The phrase "God-mountain" was used to describe the being in a tweet by Godzilla in Hell coauthor Erick Freitas.[1]
Design
The God-mountain is an enormous mountain embedded with countless eyeballs and kaiju parts, including structures which resemble wings, fins or sails, claws and/or horns, and Anguirus's carapace. The mountain is divided up vertically by long horizontal stretches of Grecian columns and walls, making it overall similar to the multilayered Mount Purgatory from Dante's Divine Comedy. Its eyes are depicted with countless unique designs, though they share the same colors in two distinct panels. As the God-mountain scolded Godzilla, its irises and pupils were depicted as yellow with blue sclera. When it spoke to Godzilla following SpaceGodzilla's defeat, its eyes were completely dark dull green complete with black pupils. Surrounding the God-mountain is a spiral of clouds and the army of angels that it commands.
Personality
The God-mountain is devoted to what it perceives as peace, and is persistent in attempting to persuade Godzilla to "submit" to it and "serve peace." After Godzilla killed one of its angels, the God-mountain sent him to Hell in retaliation. The God-mountain persisted with its efforts even while Godzilla was in Hell; when Godzilla is confronted by SpaceGodzilla and a horde of demons, the mountain sent angels to his aid in an attempt to earn his favor. When Godzilla proceeded to seal off the portal it created to Hell, the God-mountain desperately pleaded with the King of the Monsters to join its side, to no avail.
Origins
The God-mountain's origins and nature are left ambiguous, aside from being a powerful deity inhabiting a celestial realm.
History
Godzilla in Hell
After dying in his battle with SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla awakened to find himself in a celestial realm. Godzilla came face to face with angels baring Mothra-patterned wings and the God-mountain. The mountain attempted to persuade Godzilla to join its forces, but Godzilla responded by killing an angel as it flew down to him. The God-mountain angrily retaliated by sending Godzilla down to Hell where he would reunite with SpaceGodzilla. While facing SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla was surrounded by a swarm of demons that attempted to make him a part of Hell. The God-mountain sent down its army of angels to aide Godzilla in defeating the demons and SpaceGodzilla. Following Godzilla's triumph, the God-mountain appealed to Godzilla again, but he rejected it with a blasted of atomic breath which sealed the portal between its realm and Hell.
Abilities
Portal spawning
The God-mountain possessed the power to banish Godzilla to Hell through a vortex it created underneath him. It later created a similar vortex for its army to enter Hell where it could aide Godzilla in his fight against SpaceGodzilla and a demon horde. The portals it spawned possessed purple outlines and were composed of clouds spiraling with blue electricity.
Energy waves
The God-mountain attempted to sway Godzilla into aligning with it for the sake of "peace", unleashed a wave of energy that left his skin smoking at the same time. After he killed an angel, it released a second wave that knocked him off his feet when banishing him to Hell.
Angel army
The God-mountain possesses an army of angels at its disposal. Each is armed with a sword, which they used against the demons horde allied with SpaceGodzilla. Many of the angels flew into Godzilla's mouth to give him a temporary power boost.
Weaknesses
The God-mountain appears immobile, and its repeated attempts to sway Godzilla to its side all failed.
