Demon Anguirus
Demon Anguirus is a giant demonic ankylosaurid-like kaiju who appears in the second issue of IDW Publishing's 2015 comic miniseries Godzilla in Hell. A possessed enemy who Godzilla became reacquainted with in the bowels of Hell, Demon Anguirus fought the King of the Monsters in an icy cavern, only to be swiftly defeated by him.
Name
Demon Anguirus' name simply comes from placing the word "demon", a word referring to malevolent entities often associated with Hell, in front of Anguirus.
Design
Demon Anguirus utilizes Anguirus's second-generation Showa design with a blue-white and pale cyan color scheme that matches the environment he appears in. Most prominently, his eyes are yellow with a very faint orange sclera and a faintly whitened lack of pupils.
Personality
Demon Anguirus awakens and breaks free from his icy prison to fight Godzilla, challenging him moments after emerging.
Origins
Narration in Godzilla in Hell #2 describes the Demon Anguirus as "an old foe [of Godzilla] now possessed of a demon." Earlier in the issue, the narration characterized the Demon Rodan as one of the "lost, possessed effigies of great kaiju" who inhabit Hell, presumably including Demon Anguirus. The issue's official description states that Godzilla's opponents are "demonic versions of his greatest foes", suggesting they are demons imitating kaiju rather than demonically-possessed kaiju, although it also refers to a "city that can never be destroyed" which is not evident in the story.[1]
History
- Godzilla in Hell #2 (2015)
Godzilla in Hell issue 2
After defeating the Demon Rodan in the abysmal plain of the underworld, Godzilla strode into an icy wasteland and looked at the landscape of ice and doomed ships, spotting Demon Anguirus frozen asleep. Demon Anguirus immediately broke free and advanced toward Godzilla, the two monsters roaring at each other amidst the frozen ocean. Demon Anguirus bit Godzilla's arm, though failed to draw blood. The King of the Monsters flung the demon at an iceberg, sending the surrounding environment rattling and cracking below him. Falling through the ice and disappearing in a current of water, Godzilla found himself in the Eternal Ocean.
Abilities
Physical abilities
Demon Anguirus possesses a spiked carapace that resembles real-life Ankylosaurids' osteoderm-composed body armor, although he did not have the chance to use it in combat. The sole attack he mounted against Godzilla was a bite to the arm, though he visibly failed to even inflict the sensation of pain. Though he was unable to match the King of the Monsters in raw strength, Demon Anguirus was capable of breaking free from his encasement in ice.
Weaknesses
Demon Anguirus was quickly defeated by Godzilla, who threw him into a wall of ice. He did not recover before the ice beneath them cracked and sent Godzilla into another realm of Hell.

Roar
Demon Anguirus's roars are expressed through the onomatopoeia "REEE-UUNNNNNKKKK" and "REE-UNK", while the sound of him biting Godzilla's arm is represented by "CH-UNK".
Trivia
- Demon Anguirus appearing in an icy realm of Hell could be a reference to the scrapped film Godzilla X Varan, Baragon and Anguirus: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, a draft of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), which would've featured Anguirus as an enemy of Godzilla associated with ice. However, in that proposal Anguirus is a benevolent Guardian Monster who defends Japan, while the Demon Anguirus in Godzilla in Hell is an evil and aggressive entity.
