— Investigation report #12 (Godzilla Voxel Wars)

The fungoids[note 1] (マッシュ,   masshu)[1] are an invasive species of fungus kaiju that appear as the main antagonists in the 2023 video game Godzilla Voxel Wars. The in-game investigation reports reveal that the species is of Martian origin. They spread through spores and turn other monsters against the player, who has to defeat them in order to unlock them.

Name

The word fungoid comes from fungus. The names for the species' various forms are combinations of either fungus or mushroom and another word. As such, the names Funguirus, Fungalbee, Mushcargot, Muscashroom, Stagshroom, Dungshroom, Rhinoceroom, Mantroom and Slugshroom are results of combining one of the two words with Anguirus, bee, escargot, musca, stag, dung, rhinoceros, mantis and slug.

Design

The fungoids in general take on a mushroom-like appearance. They all come in various colors which vary based on their level. The colors in order, from weakest to strongest, are red, brown, green, and dark blue, with the world bosses being purple with lime spots and greater overall detail.

Funguirus have a mushroom cap-like head covered in spots with a pair of large, glowing red eyes at the front, with Funguirus I having larger eyes than the other forms. Their bodies end in a short tail and they have two legs which are positioned on their sides. Their feet have two toes with a white claw on the end of each, and they have a small white claw on the back of their heel. The Funguirus Ω have a thicker body than their regular counterparts and three front claws instead of two.

Fungalbees are very insect-like in build, having a head, thorax, and abdomen. They are positioned in a curved shape, so that their head looks forward while their abdomen, adorned with a needle, also points in the direction it is looking. They have two antennae sprouting from the top of their heads and two large, glowing red eyes on the front of their face. Their head is shaped like a mushroom cap and has spots covering it. They have two pairs of wings on their thorax and their abdomen, which extends outward past their head, is striped. Fungablbee Ω have a larger head, thicker abdomen, and a larger needle than their regular counterparts.

Mushcargot are very snail-like, and have two glowing red eyes on the ends of stalks and two antennae below their eyes. Their body is mostly covered in a round shell with a swirling stripe pattern on it.

Muscashrooms resemble fly-like insects, with a head, thorax, and abdomen, and three legs on either side of their thorax. They have very large, glowing red eyes and wings on the top of their thorax just behind their head. The tops of their thorax and abdomen resemble mushroom caps and have a spotted pattern.

Stagshrooms greatly resemble bipedal versions of stag beetles. They have a round body and a mushroom cap-shaped head, which is covered in spots. They have two long, glowing red eyes on top of their face and two large mandibles stick out from the front of their face. They have two arms and two legs, one on each side of their bodies. Their arms have a single white claw on the end of them, and the legs have three large claws, two facing the front and one at the back, that they stand on. They have two pairs of smaller limbs on their torso.

Dungshrooms greatly resemble dung beetles with two glowing red eyes on their face. They have a pair of legs in the front with which they use to stand on the ground and two back legs with which they use to push a large, spotted fungal ball around. Dungshroom Ω have a thin horn at the end of their face that sticks straight up.

Rhinocerooms greatly resemble rhinocerous beetles, with a head section and round body section that has three pairs of legs sprouting from it on the sides. Their body section resembles a mushroom cap and is covered with spots. They have a small, forward-facing horn on the top of their head and a large, upwards-curving two-pronged horn at the front of their face. They also have two forward-facing, glowing red eyes on their face. Rhinoceroom Ω have a different shaped horn, with one point directly forward and protruding from the top of their head while a second, shorter horn protrudes from the front of their face.

Mantrooms share a general body shape with that of mantises, and stand on two pairs of legs that are attached to their main body and face away from each other. They have a midsection sticking upwards that attaches at the front of their main body and ends in their head. They have two scythe-like arms that are attached to their midsection, and the top of their head is adorned with a bowl-shaped mushroom cap covered in spots. Their head is relatively large compared to their body and they have small, glowing red eyes that face forwards. They also have a visible mouth with a few white teeth inside it.

Slugshrooms greatly resemble slugs, and have two large, glowing red eyes on top of stalks. Their head is adorned with a mushroom cap covered in spots.

The Kingshroom in its pillar form resembles a large mushroom or tree. It has a grey-brown stem with several tendrils sprouting from its base, with each tendril having a red tip. It has a large, white mushroom cap at its top patterned with red spots. In its monstrous form, the Kingshroom's build greatly resembles that of the Funguirus. It has a large, gaping maw at the front of its body filled with teeth, and its head is adorned with a mushroom cap very similar in appearence to that of its pillar form. It has no eyes and its body color is brown. It has a short, thick tail that drags on the ground and two legs, one on either side of its body. The Kingshroom's feet are large and possess four red claws. It is covered in mushroom spores.

History

The fungoids were first discovered on Mars, but at some point they invaded Earth, quickly spreading themselves and their spores throughout the world. At the Kingshroom's command, they took control of buildings and turned them into nests while also capturing Earth's kaiju and infecting them, putting them under mind control and turning them against the planet. Godzilla began attacking the fungoids, destroying their nests and freeing the other monsters from their control. With his allies, Godzilla cleared out the fungoids until finally reaching the Kingshroom's pillar form. The Kingshroom transformed into its monstrous form, and it and the kaiju engaged in battle, with Earth's defenders coming out on top.

Abilities

The abilities of each fungoid depend on the specific type.

Parasitization

Fungoids are able to contaminate buildings and other kaiju. Monsters that have been parasitized are turned against the other kaiju via mind control and fight the player alongside the other fungoids. When buildings are contaminated, they begin to erode and become enemy nests. Both structures and monsters that have been put under control of the fungoids are covered in large mushroom spores, with the monsters' eyes glowing red like the fungoids themselves.

Spores

Fungoid spores are able to summon other fungoids into battle. If an enemy kaiju is on top of the spore, the fungoid will not be summoned and the spore will be destroyed, but the enemy kaiju will be damaged in the process.

Funguirus

Physical capabilities

Funguirus use their bodies to strike or slam into buildings and opponents in front of them, causing knockback. While Funguirus I-IV can only hit one target at a time, Funguirus Ω can cause damaging shockwaves in a gigantic area in front of them.

Fungalbee

Flight

Fungalbees are able to fly, allowing them to hover over dangers such as lava or poison.

Needles

Fungalbees are able to fire the needles out of their abdomens for a long ranged attack that causes knockback and reload them immediately. While Fungalbeees I-IV can only hit one target at a time, Fungalbee Ω has a physically bigger needle that causes a large explosion in the area where it first makes contact with an object.

Mushcargot

Shell

When damage is received, the Mushcargots can retract into their shell, defending them from enemy attack and negating knockback.

Muscashroom

Flight

Muscashrooms are able to fly, allowing them to hover over dangers such as lava or poison.

Health boost

Muscashrooms can increase the health of all units on their team other than themselves by 1 point.

Stagshroom

Mandibles

Stagshrooms can knock the enemy back with their mandibles, sending the opponent flying until they either hit an object or reach the edge of the stage, dealing damage.

Dungshroom

Arc Blast

Dungshrooms can lauch their fungal balls over objects and hit enemies, dealing damage to the opponent directly hit and knocking back enemies surrounding the impact zone. This is the same for Dungshrooms I-IV, but Dungshroom Ω cause a large area of damage when their projectile hits an object, and any enemies on the edges of this larger impact zone are knocked backwards.

Rhinoceroom

Horn charge

Rhinocerooms utilize their horn to charge into an opponent, damaging the enemy and knocking them back while at the same time injuring themselves. They can use this ability to charge over dangers such as lava or poison. This is the same for Rhinocerooms I-IV, but Rhinoceroom Ω cause a large area of damage when they charge into an object, dealing damage and knockback to foes while still damaging themselves.

Mantroom

Physical capabilities

Mantrooms are able to strike targets twice in a row in a line in front of them, causing damage and knockback each time.

Slugshroom

Physical capabilities

Slugshrooms are able to strike one opponent in front of them, dealing both damage and knockback.

Self-replication

Slugshrooms can split to form a clone of themselves. The new Slugshroom will appear directly behind the first, and also possesses this ability. If the space behind them is blocked by an obstacle or danger, the clone will appear on another adjacent space. Slugshrooms are able to continously split until they are killed. Slugshroom Ω are able to split up to four different directions each time they replicate. Any obstacles, such as buildings, directly in front of the Slugshroom Ω can be destroyed through physical attack to allow for more space.

Kingshroom

Mind control

In its mushroom pillar form, the Kingshroom is able to produce an electromagnetic signal that it uses to command the fungoids.

Transformation

The Kingshroom is able to transform from its mushroom pillar form into a more monstrous and animalistic one. In doing so, the mushroom pillar form erupts in a massive explosion before the monster form emerges.

Physical capabilities

The Kingshroom is able to deal damage in a large area in front of it.

Spores

The Kingshroom is able to lay down spores in each space it walks on, summoning more fungoids.
