"Maritime Pilot" is the debut episode of Skull Island. Directed by Danny Araya, it premiered on Netflix alongside the rest of the series on June 22, 2023.

Plot

A young girl in handcuffs runs away from a group of mercenaries on a boat navigating the South Pacific Ocean. One of them manages to grab the girl by her leg, but she quickly kicks his face and escapes. As the men try to back her up in a corner, the girl climbes up to the upper floor of the ship despite her being handcuffed. There, she encounters the other crewmen who try to catch her. The girl jumps on one of the shipmates, inadvertently spilling a can of gasoline in the process, while another one of the mercenaries jumps on the girl in an attempt to get her. Instead, she pushes him off the edge of the boat, which causes the man to land on a switch that causes a ski boat carried by the ship to be dropped down into the water. The mercenaries succeed in cornering her this time, with one of them threatening her with a gun while another activates a taser. The girl takes a lighter from her pocket and turns it on, which only causes the others to laugh. However, their laughter soon turns into horror when the girl throws the lighter on the spilled gasoline, setting the boat on fire. With the mercenaries distracted, the girl uses her belt to zipline down the rigging and into the ski boat below before sailing away into the stormy night.

Meanwhile, a young man named Charlie is once again having an unsuccessful conversation with his father Cap, the captain of the Once Upon a Maritime, about leaving their life of perpetual expedition in search of monsters and lost civilizations to go to college. The captain is unwilling to accept Charlie's ambition, and insists that he think it over while he goes to confer with his associate Hiro. Charlie's friend and Hiro's son Mike teases him about his repeated lack of success, in part because he is more than content with a seafaring life. The boys watch as a crewman named "Boomer" launches a depth charge, which Mike's father notes was unsuccessful. Charlie walks around the deck, and soon spots the handcuffed girl floating nearby. He calls for help, but no one comes. When he sees her begin to go under, he ties a rope around his waist and dives overboard to rescue her. She mumbles to him, asking about her dog, and Mike soon finds them and gets help. The crew then hoists them both back aboard before the captain, Mike, Hiro, and Charlie take the girl to the wheelhouse and lay her on a table. She soon awakens and is hostile and paranoid, ordering Charlie not to use the radio. Hiro offers her some coffee, which she accepts but is confused and disgusted by. The girl then spots a flare shot up in the distance, and warns Cap and Hiro against checking to see if those who sent it are in trouble, and as Hiro, Mike, and the captain look at the distant ship with binoculars, it suddenly disappears from their view. Unbeknownst to them, a ski boat has arrived off their starboard side.

Back in the wheelhouse, the girl, who introduces herself as Annie to the smitten Charlie, tries to free herself from her handcuffs as the boy tries to explain to her what the expedition ship does. After filling in some gaps in her vocabulary, he reveals that the ship drops bombs to search for sea monsters, which Annie insists they stop, lest they bring back the monster that destroyed her lifeboat. Charlie runs to the bow to tell his father as one of the men from the ski boat sneaks aboard. Cap and Hiro are elated to hear that a real monster may exist in the waters, and return to the bridge to find that Annie had destroyed their radio equipment while they were gone. She explains that this was an accident, as her assailant had dodged her swing. Cap promises to protect her, and asks her to tell him her story just as the intruder, who sarcastically introduces himself as "Jules Verne", tries to get them all to abandon ship at knifepoint, insisting that they do not know what is going on. Out on deck, the deaf crewmate Boomer is nearly shot by a second intruder, who is yanked from the vessel by a giant tentacle. Boomer continues his work, but hears an impact behind him and turns around to see the stranger lying prone on the deck. He then watches in astonishment as three of the offending appendages arise from the water before him. A tentacle then creeps to the wheelhouse and yanks the threatening mercenary away before flinging him out into the sea. The constricted Boomer is then slammed into the windows. Mike runs out to help him, while Hiro chases after his son, and they find the deck empty. Annie insists that they get away to safety on "her island". Mike pushes Hiro out of the way of one of the red tentacles, and the two watch in horror as the boat rocks and a great, suction-cup covered, octopus-like arm arises from the sea. It begins to come down, and Hiro pushes his son out of the way before it slams down on top of him, leaving Mike spattered in his father's blood.

More arms arise and red tentacles yank crew away from all over the ship. Enraged, Mike takes a harpoon from the wall and throws it at the mass of tendrils, but one of the tentacles catches it and hurls it back. It lands in front of Annie, who uses it to cut her cuffs before telling Cap, Charlie, and Mike to get to her island. Taking the harpoon's tip, she dives overboard. Mike takes the fire axe of a fallen sailor and swings wildly at the tentacles until one charges itself with electricity and strikes him, sending him flying into the water. Charlie runs to help his friend, and Cap slides off the ship as the great blue arms crush it in their grip. Tangled in a net, Cap soon finds himself at the heart of a group of the bioluminescent arms and a great pink eye. He struggles in the net until Annie swims by and uses her harpoon tip to cut him free. Charlie ends up in the shallows of an island, where he finds Mike, who bursts into tears. They wonder where they are, not realizing that they are sitting in the footprint of a gargantuan ape.
