Six Godzilla incarnations unleash their atomic breath in the short film Tokyo GODZILLAs

Atomic breath (放射熱線,   hōsha nessen, lit. '"radioactive heat ray") is the signature breath attack associated with Godzilla. It typically takes the form of a blue beam or flame-like blast expelled from the user's mouth. Although it is a staple of almost all Godzilla incarnations, there are multiple exceptions; some Godzilla incarnations lack the ability to use atomic breath in their early forms, but gain it in more advanced forms; some lack the use of atomic breath altogether, such as the version of Godzilla from Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla series, which instead has fire breath. Additionally, some characters and entities related to or unrelated to Godzilla have used it or a similar attack as well.

Name

The English term atomic breath first appeared in film critic Bosley Crowther's review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! for the April 28, 1956 edition of The New York Times.[1]

History

Showa era

Godzilla (First Generation)

The original Godzilla igniting Tokyo's structures with his atomic breath in the 1954 Godzilla film.

In the 1954 Godzilla film, Godzilla's atomic breath is an incandescent light (白熱光,   hakunekkō, lit. white-hot light)[3] which takes the form of a stream of white, mist-like vapour. His dorsal fins would radiate with a similar white glow when unleashing his atomic breath. The attack is able to boil seawater and destroy ships, reducing them to burning wrecks. It is also capable of melting metallic objects, such as the electric towers meant to repel him from entering Tokyo. It is also incendiary in nature, able to set buildings ablaze, causing fires that could quickly spread across large tracts Tokyo.

In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the blast retains its vapor-like properties, but has a more defined glow.

Godzilla (Second Generation)

In Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla utilizes an incandescent light (白熱光,   hakunekkō, lit. white-hot light) similar to the original Godzilla's, an attack which is also referred to as a radioactive spray (放射能噴出,   hōshanō funshutsu).[4] While Godzilla's dorsal plates do not glow before the blast is fired in Godzilla Raids Again, with the exception of his flight in Godzilla vs. Hedorah and several shots in Zone Fighter, this change would be reverted for the rest of the Showa era. From King Kong vs. Godzilla onwards, Godzilla's atomic breath takes on a more focused, beam-like blue flame attack, referred to as an atomic breath (放射熱線,   hōsha nessen, lit. radioactive heat ray) or atomic flame (放射火炎,   hōsha kaen, lit. radioactive flame). Along with setting fire to targets and melting metal objects such as tanks, it has been used against a variety of Godzilla's foes. The attack is telegraphed by his dorsal plates lighting up with a blue glow, which continue to pulse during the duration of the discharge. Unique among other Godzilla incarnations, this Godzilla is capable of powered flight by using his atomic breath, aiming it towards the ground and reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.[5]

Heisei era

Godzilla (Heisei)

Godzilla blasting a refinery with his atomic breath in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Throughout the Heisei era Godzilla films, Godzilla's atomic breath takes the form of a focused beam of radiation, which causes large explosions on contact with its target, and can wound various foes. In The Return of Godzilla, the beam is thin and slightly tilts upwards as the blast extends outwards, but is otherwise straight in trajectory. The beam increases in rigidity, girth, and intensity as the films progress and Godzilla grows stronger. The attack is telegraphed by Godzilla's dorsal plates flashing blue for approximately 1.26 seconds, before he fires the beam from his mouth.

Godzilla (Get Going! Godzilland)

In Get Going! Godzilland, Godzilla can fire an atomic breath similiar in appearance to fire. Though the attack was shown to be capable of splintering the moon in the introductions to the second pair of OVAS, it is only shown incinerating a fish at its strongest in the narratives themselves. Additionally, he is incapable of firing it on an empty stomach, as seen when he attempts to fire it at Mechagodzilla when the robot kidnaps his friend Anguirus.

TriStar

Godzilla (Godzilla: The Series)

Godzilla's atomic breath in Godzilla: The Series

The offspring of Godzilla, seen in Godzilla: The Series, fires a green ray of energy called Atomic Fire Breath (also referred to as Power Breath in "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been"). A blue glow runs up his dorsal plates and reaches his eyes before he projects the breath. This weapon has a long range and is hot enough to melt steel and turn sand into glass. In "Wedding Bells Blew," it was able to create large storms when it clashed with the Sub-Zero Manta's freezing breath. When the breath is used underwater, it initially comes out as fire, but soon simply turns the surrounding water into steam, hampering visibility. He can also exhale atomic fire through his nostrils, as seen in the episode "Bird of Paradise."

Millennium era

Godzilla (Godzilla 2000: Millennium)

The Godzilla that appears in the first Millennium era Godzilla movie possesses a vivid orange atomic breath. It is incendiary in nature, capable of causing fiery explosions and setting objects ablaze. The ray was capable of blasting off some of the rock encasing the Millennian UFO in its first encounter with Godzilla, and destroyed the craft when Godzilla managed to land a direct hit on it in their second encounter. Additionally, it was able to severely wound Orga, but the latter was able to heal.

When charging his atomic breath, Godzilla's dorsal plates glow bright orange and give off intense heat, and remain lit during the ray's discharge.

Godzilla (Godzilla vs. Megaguirus)

Godzilla uses his atomic breath to destroy Megaguirus

The Godzilla in 2000's Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is practically identical to the previous film's incarnation. Godzilla's dorsal fins glow orange and begin giving off intense heat, then Godzilla unleashes a fiery orange beam from his mouth. The beam has incendiary properties, producing fiery explosions upon striking surfaces or other monsters. Godzilla's atomic breath was even capable of destroying a miniature black hole fired by the Dimension Tide on two occasions.

Godzilla (GMK)

Godzilla uses his atomic breath against Baragon.

In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla's atomic breath takes the form of a highly destructive blue beam, which causes explosions on contact with what it strikes, to the extent that produced a mushroom cloud when he first used it. Its power was enough to severely wound or kill the Guardian Monsters during his battles with them, one-shotting Baragon and killing Mothra at point blank range, and incapacitating King Ghidorah. It also has pinpoint accuracy, allowing Godzilla to shoot fighter jets out of the air. Godzilla was also able to use it underwater unhindered during his battle with King Ghidorah in Tokyo Bay. However, after a D-03 missile drills through his chest, his atomic breath instead shoots from the wound, injuring him.

When charging his atomic breath, Godzilla's dorsal fins glow blue, and his left and right rows of prominent dorsal fins shift slightly to the left and right respectively. Godzilla inhales, with gusts of wind and blue particles entering his mouth before unleashing his attack.

Godzilla (Kiryu series)

Godzilla unleashing his atomic breath against the JSDF

In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, the second Godzilla has atomic breath is depicted as a destructive blue laser, causing explosions on impact. It is powerful enough to destroy JSDF vehicles and various structures, along with harm Kiryu, launching the mecha back and causing substantial damage to it. When Godzilla charges his atomic breath, his dorsal plates glow blue, and blue flame like energy builds in his mouth before he fires the devastating blast.

Godzilla (Godzilla Final Wars)

Godzilla firing his atomic breath at Monster X

In Godzilla Final Wars, Godzilla's atomic breath is depicted as a blue beam, much like other depictions of the character. This attack is very effective for Godzilla, creating large explosions on contact with structures it hits and aiding greatly in defeating numerous kaiju. It was powerful enough to decapitate Gigan during their first battle, kill Zilla with a single shot, eliminate Hedorah and Ebirah. It was also powerful enough to knock back Monster X with a blast to the face, and matched the alien monster's Gravity Beam "Destroyed Thunder" (引力光線「デストロイド・サンダー」).

Godzilla (Always: Sunset on Third Street 2)

In Always: Sunset on Third Street 2, Ryunosuke Chagawa thinks of a story with Godzilla attacking Tokyo, in which Godzilla uses his atomic breath to blast off the top half of Tokyo Tower. This atomic breath is a thin beam that is blue in color.

Monsterverse

Godzilla (Monsterverse)

Godzilla fires his atomic breath at the female MUTO

In the 2014 Godzilla film, Godzilla's atomic breath takes the form of a pale blue flame-like beam. He used it more as a last resort attack, not relying on it until having fought extensively using his sheer strength. It was capable of pushing the Female MUTO back, burning her, and causing her to fall unconscious briefly, though other than that her armor allowed her to withstand it. In order to kill her, Godzilla used a technique with his atomic breath called the "Kiss of Death," in which he fires his atomic breath down the Female MUTO's throat while holding her jaws open.

In most other Monsterverse media, Godzilla's atomic breath is a deeper blue and has a more laser-like appearance. When Godzilla is supercharged, his atomic breath's power is significantly increased and broadens out as it extends outwards. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, such an atomic breath was capable of knocking King Ghidorah over and pushing him back as well. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla's atomic breath was shown to be powerful enough to blast a hole into the Hollow Earth.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, after Godzilla evolves and becomes more powerful, his atomic breath takes on a magenta color, though it is not confirmed if it is more powerful than his standard version.

Godzilla (Shin Godzilla)

Godzilla firing his atomic breath in Shin Godzilla

In Shin Godzilla, Godzilla is able to use his atomic breath only after reaching his fourth form. The attack initially takes the form of a cloud of smoke exhaled from his mouth and then a stream of fire, called the Super Thermal Radiation Particle Belt Flame (超高熱放射性粒子帯焔,   Chō Kōnetsu Hōshasei Ryūshi-taien) or Thermal Flame (熱焔,   Netsuen) for short, which is capable of burning through entire city blocks at high speed. From there, he focuses the fire into a narrow, purple stream of atomic breath (放射熱線,   Hōsha Nessen, lit. "Radiation Heat Beam"), which slices through buildings and strikes distant targets. When firing the atomic breath, Godzilla's body emits a purple glow, which is concentrated around his dorsal fins. Godzilla's upper jaw then unhinges from his lower jaw, which splits apart to make room for the beam to be fired. After expending a lot of energy, Godzilla's beam weakened back to a stream of fire before petering out. Godzilla also activated his anti-flash defensive membrane to avoid being blinded by his own atomic breath at night.

Godzilla Filius

Godzilla Filius, a subspecies of Godzilla Earth produced from his cells, can also project a powerful charged particle beam from in front of his mouth area that can strike targets with pinpoint accuracy.

Godzilla Earth

Godzilla Earth firing his Atomic Breath

The Godzilla featured in the GODZILLA anime film trilogy can fire a pinpoint, highly-accelerated charged particle beam called his Atomic Breath (熱線 Nessen, lit. "Heat Ray"), which is capable of piercing even the thickest armor of other monsters or completely wiping out entire cities like Los Angeles in a single blast. Godzilla Earth fires this beam from his mouth area, though it does not seem to fire directly from his mouth but rather from his electromagnetic shield. The Atomic Breath generates powerful electromagnetic waves when fired, which can destroy electronic devices more than 300 kilometers away. The Aratrum's calculations revealed that Godzilla Earth's Atomic Breath would be powerful enough to pass through Earth's atmosphere and destroy the ship while it orbited the planet from 1,800 kilometers away. Godzilla effectively demonstrated this while destroying Ghidorah's portals, his final blast extending into space. The energy output from Godzilla Earth's Atomic Breath was later measured as 3 terawatts (3,000 gigawatts), which was more powerful than previously calculated.

Snow Godzilla

Snow Godzilla firing his atomic breath

A version of Godzilla called Snow Godzilla appeared in the 2019 film Shinkalion the Movie, and has atomic breath which takes the form of a blue ray with yellow highlights. It could cause both Hayato Hayasugi and Nahane to scream in pain when their mechs were struck by this attack, although it did not leave any visible damage on either, but it contributed enough damage to the latter that Hayato and the younger Hokuto could finish it off.

Godzilla (Godzilla Singular Point)

Godzilla Ultima using his atomic breath to kill a Manda

The version of Godzilla in Godzilla Singular Point lacks the ability to use atomic breath in his first two forms, Godzilla Aquatilis and Godzilla Amphibia, although the latter is capable of using a flammable ice breath. As Godzilla Terrestris, he is able to fire ring like blasts similar to Godzilla's typical atomic breath, which form in front of his mouth as his dorsal fins glow blue from the veins. As Godzilla Ultima, he is able to use an actual atomic breath, which increases in power as he grows in size. In his 50 meter long size, Godzilla Ultima's atomic breath is capable of melting buildings and slicing them, along with setting large tracts of the city ablaze, and killing a Manda. When he grew to his height of over 100 meters, his atomic breath was able to near-instantly blast a building in half and take a chunk out of Jet Jaguar's face, as well as parting the red dust storm above Tokyo when aimed skyward.

Godzilla Ultima's atomic breath is telegraphed by his dorsal plates glowing blue from his veins, and glowing blue ring-like objects materializing in front of his face, which would align from largest to smallest before he fires a condensed blue-violet beam from his mouth. According to the Godzilla Singular Point novelization, the breath is not actually atomic in nature, but rather a CTC (Closed Timelike Curve) molecular laser which converges and strengthens multiple beams from the future.[6]

Godzilla (Fest Godzilla)

(To be added.)

Godzilla (Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex)

In the two short films made by GEMSTONE, Godzilla uses a blue colored atomic breath, which could kill a Gigan Miles in a single blast. When firing his atomic breath, his dorsal plates glow blue in a similar fashion to the Heisei Godzilla.

Godzilla (Chibi Godzilla Raids Again)

Though Godzilla's appearances in Chibi Godzilla Raids Again were minor due to the show focusing more on his son Chibi Godzilla, Godzilla still demonstrated atomic breath at some points in the series, where it was depicted as a blue laser similar to that of other incarnations such as on a cinema screen being watched by Chibi Godzilla. Chibi Mothra speculated that using his atomic breath might hurt his mouth - though this was neither confirmed or nor denied by Chibi Godzilla, his response seems to imply it isn't the case.

Godzilla (Godzilla Minus One)

Godzilla firing his atomic breath in Ginza

In Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla gains the ability to wield his devastating atomic breath (放射熱線,   hōsha nessen, lit. "radioactive heat ray") or heat ray (熱線,   nessen) after being irradiated and mutated. This attack takes the form of a blue beam attack much like traditional depictions of the atomic breath; however, rather than a continuous beam, the attack is fired for a brief moment before generating a powerful explosion upon striking its target, creating mushroom clouds and shockwaves that sweep outwards from the blast. The resulting vacuum causes air to surge back into the area, causing yet more damage. All of this was demonstrated in Godzilla's attack on the Ginza district of Tokyo. The attack is also effective in water, as Godzilla used it to obliterate the Takao from in the ocean below.

Much like with many other Godzilla incarnations, Godzilla's dorsal fins glow blue when charging his atomic breath; however, what sets it apart is that the dorsal fins jut upwards as they light up, with the pattern successively progressing, starting from those at the base of the tail and ending with those at the base of his neck. Blue particles enter Godzilla's mouth, and the dorsal plates snap back into their original places all at once, before Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath.

Attractions

Godzilla (Monster Planet of Godzilla)

Godzilla first utilizes his atomic breath against the spaceship Earth and causes it some brief damage though not enough to render it inoperable. He later uses it to attack Tokyo, causing massive explosions, and then successfully destroys the tanks opposing him before using it against Rodan.

Godzilla's atomic breath appears as a blue laser similar to that of the Heisei Godzilla though this incarnation of Godzilla is different in that his dorsal plates do not appear to glow before unleashing the attack.

Godzilla using his atomic breath against Biollante

In Godzilla, King of the Monsters, one of Godzilla's primary weapons is his atomic breath, which is a laser fired from Godzilla's mouth much like that of other incarnations though the Game Boy's lack of color means that it is a whitish color with gray outlines rather than the traditional blue. Though it is very deadly against enemies such as man-made weapons or other kaiju and has the beneficial property of being capable of destroying the projectiles sent by enemies, it comes with the cost of draining Godzilla's life bar whenever he uses it. This means that it must be used carefully though Godzilla's ability to regenerate can be used to counteract the damage caused.

Godzilla's radioactive breath

In Marvel Comics' Godzilla series, Godzilla's atomic breath is a flame-like blast of concentrated radiation with a fiery orange color, referred to as radioactive breath. It has also been referred to as "flaming breath" in issue 5 and "radioactive blasts" in issue 23. This blast was potent enough to overwhelm even the Human Torch.

Godzilla's dorsal plates do not glow while using the his radioactive breath, and there is no visible charge up telegraphing it.

It is unknown if he retains his ability to use his radioactive breath following his mutation by Dr. Demonicus, as he never uses it in battle.

Godzilla (Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Hedorah)

Godzilla using his atomic breath on Hedorah

In Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Hedorah, Godzilla's atomic breath takes on the form of a white laser with blue outlines that is fired from his mouth. The first time it hits Hedorah, it is powerful enough to pass through Hedorah's pollution-based form and deal damage to the monster as well as a building it hits, only stopping and causing an explosion once it reaches the ground. The second time it hits Hedorah, it simply knocks the monster back. A brief third time splatters some of Hedorah's biomass but is too brief to deal any real damage.

Like with many other incarnations, Godzilla's dorsal plates light blue when he uses his atomic breath.

Godzilla (Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Mothra)

In Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Mothra, Godzilla's atomic breath takes on two different forms both times it is used though it is a blue laser fired from his mouth each time. The first time, where it destroys the tail of the Admiral's jet, it is fire-like in texture though still blue. The second time, when it is used against Mothra, it is instead a whitish-blue laser with straight edges and splits into multiple smaller beams going in different directions when it hits Mothra.

Godzilla (Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Gigan)

In Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Gigan, Godzilla's atomic breath is similar to that of other incarnations in that it is a blue laser fired from his mouth. It is used two times in the comics: first against the aircraft carrier Gigan briefly uses as a shield, destroying it, and a second time when he fires his atomic breath directly into the air after defeating Gigan in a moment likely referencing Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).

Variations

Spiral Heat Ray

Use by the Heisei Godzilla

Godzilla first uses the Spiral Heat Ray (スパイラル熱線,   Supairaru Nessen) in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, in which he severs King Ghidorah's middle head. In this film, the spiral heat ray is still blue in color, but is surrounded by a purplish spiral of energy. Before Godzilla fires the spiral heat ray, his dorsal fins are surrounded in blue electricity.

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, after absorbing Fire Rodan's energy, Godzilla was able to obliterate Super Mechagodzilla using a more powerful spiral heat ray called either the Hyper Uranium Heat Ray (ハイパーウラニウム熱線,   Haipā Uraniumu Nessen), Super Flame Heat Ray (超火炎熱線,   Chō Kaen Nessen), or Red Heat Ray (赤い熱線,   Akai Nessen), which is red in color rather than blue.

In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla used another red variant of the Spiral Heat Ray called the Burn Spiral Heat Ray (バーンスパイラル熱線,   Bān Supairaru Nessen) or Nuclear Fusion Heat Ray (融合反応熱線,   Yūgō Han'nō Nessen), which he gained by absorbing runaway cosmic energy released from destroying SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals.[7] This he used to finish off Spacegodzilla and destroy M.O.G.U.E.R.A.

In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla's atomic breath becomes a variant called the Burning Heat Ray (バーニング熱線,   Bāningu Nessen) after he absorbs a large amount of atomic energy from the explosion of Baas Island and becomes Burning Godzilla. He used this beam to devastate Hong Kong and later utilized it in battle with the Super X3, with Sho Kuroki even remarking that it is stronger than his normal atomic breath. Godzilla's power increased as he approached meltdown, with his atomic breath becoming the Infinite Spiral Heat Ray (インフィニット熱線 Infinitto Nessen), also called the Burning Spiral Heat Ray (バーニングスパイラル熱線,   Bāningu Supairaru Nessen) or Hyper Heat Ray (ハイパー熱線,   Haipā Nessen). This beam is said to increase infinitely in power each time Burning Godzilla uses it, and it was capable of blasting off part of the frill on Destoroyah's head and severely wounding his shoulder while at the same time setting the entire surrounding area ablaze, forcing Destoroyah to try and retreat.

Use by Godzilla (GMK)

Godzilla fires his gravitational atomic breath to destroy King Ghidorah

In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, after absorbing energy from King Ghidorah's gravity beams into his dorsal plates, Godzilla combines it with his atomic breath, producing an even stronger blue beam wrapped in a yellow electrical spiral, called the gravitational atomic breath (引力放射熱線,   Inryoku Hōsha Nessen). This beam was powerful enough to completely destroy King Ghidorah in a single blast, ending their third and final fight.

Use by Godzilla (Godzilla Final Wars)

Godzilla uses a powered version of his standard atomic breath called the Hyper Spiral Heat Ray (ハイパースパイラル熱線). Godzilla used this atomic breath to target the asteroid Gorath as it approached the Earth with pinpoint accuracy. He also possesses another, more powerful red spiral heat ray known as the Burning G Spark Heat Ray (バーニングGスパーク熱線). This beam is used after Godzilla has been supercharged with Shinichi Ozaki's Keizer energy, which he used to defeat Keizer Ghidorah, launching the monster into space before obliterating it.

Use by Godzilla Earth

Although never shown in the films, in GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, Godzilla Earth uses a more powerful variant of his atomic breath that is crimson in color and shaped like a spiral. Godzilla must store up energy in order to fire this version of his atomic breath, which he used to destroy the Gorath asteroid from the Arctic while it was in outer space. The spiral beam has been observed to have a range of over 300 kilometers.

Use by Monsterverse Evolved Godzilla

Godzilla fires his purple corkscrew atomic breath at the Skar King

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, during the final battle in Rio de Janero, Godzilla uses as powerful variant that takes on a corkscrew shape and a purple coloration, which he wields against the Skar King and Shimo, and later uses to dispel the snowstorm generated by Shimo. While charging this attack, his dorsal plates, eyes, and areas around his body illuminate brightly with a purple hue. When first using it, he raises his arms up as he channels immense energy through his body before firing the blast. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - The Official Movie Novelization, this variant is stated to be his most powerful blast.

In Godzilla Battle Line, Evolved Godzilla (Rio ver)'s the bio state those blasts are stated to be powerful enough to destroy cities.

Use by Godzilla in Godzilla: Cataclysm

Godzilla's spiral heat ray in Godzilla: Cataclysm

In Godzilla: Cataclysm, Godzilla utilizes his Spiral Heat Ray against Mothra, shooting her down by targeting her wing. Later on, with the aide of her and Biollante, Godzilla faced the threat of Destoroyah, firing his atomic breath directly at the crustacean monster's face to effectively finish him off, reducing his enemy's head down to the endoskeleton and leaving his regenerative powers useless.

Use by Godzilla in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

Godzilla blasts Magita with his Spiral Heat Ray

In the final issue of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Godzilla used an orange-colored Spiral Heat Ray as a last resort in order to defeat Magita. In order to perform this attack, Godzilla musters massive amounts of his internal power and channels it as he charges his atomic breath, with energy rising up around him before his dorsal fins and eyes light up with a fiery glow.

Use by Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Cthulhu: A Death May Die Story

Godzilla using his orange spiral atomic breath to finish off Cthulhu in Godzilla vs. Cthulhu: A Death May Die Story

In Godzilla vs. Cthulhu: A Death May Die Story Godzilla was not shown using it until the climax after being heavily injured by X-A Airship's Atom Smasher's though Godzilla is able to absorb their energy and get back up where he fire a powerful orange spiral ray that manage to render Cthulhu immobile.

Dorsal fin and tail beams

In Shin Godzilla, Godzilla is able to fire additional atomic beams from both the dorsal plates on his back and the second head on his tail. Godzilla's array of dorsal fin beams aided him in eliminating the remaining B-2 Spirit Bombers and their ordinances during his devastating attack in Tokyo, along with against the drones used in Operation Yashiori. These clustered dorsal beams can be aimed with great accuracy and fired individually, as shown when one disabled a camera close to Godzilla’s dormant body. Godzilla can adjust their trajectory by tilting his back, increasing their effectiveness at countering oncoming attacks.

Godzilla’s tail beam is functionally the same as his atomic breath, and can be used in conjunction with it unlike his dorsal fin beams. When charging his tail beam, an especially bright glow pulses down his tail to the second head at its tip.

Special state

In the GEMSTONE short films, when Godzilla enters his "special state," his atomic power increases, strengthening his atomic breath. In this white form, it is extremely powerful, able to split apart Megalon—who had previously resisted Godzilla's basic atomic breath—and overpower Gigan Rex in a beam-fight despite the extraterrestrial enhancing his chest beam with the power cores of six Gigan Miles soldiers.

Hellbat Godzilla

In the final issue of Godzilla in Hell, Godzilla reformed his body by possessing a swarm of Hellbats that he allowed to consume his flesh, and influenced them to fire atomic breaths from their mouths, combining them into a single massive blast from Godzilla's entire body. This attack was able to kill the God-demon, paving Godzilla's way out of Hell.

Radioactive Flame

Super Godzilla's Radioactive Flame

In the 1993 Godzilla video game Super Godzilla, once Godzilla has transformed into Super Godzilla, he can use the Radioactive Flame (火炎放射) or Nova Breath in English , a powered-up orange-yellow version of the Atomic Breath.

Finishing Breath

Godzilla 90s' Finishing Breath

In 2004 video game Godzilla: Save the Earth, Godzilla 90s' rage attack is a more powerful version of his atomic breath called the Finishing Breath, which takes on a purple hue. This deals a large amount of damage to opponents who are struck by it.

Properties

Radiation/energy

The defining trait of Godzilla's atomic breath is the radiation or other form of energy composing it. Though the extent of radiation emission and manipulation varies from incarnation to incarnation, the general nature of the attack is highly potent in terms of energy and typically projects a large, concentrated quantity of radiation at a target or at least leaves behind residues of radiation in the surrounding environment.

In the Monsterverse according to New Century Special Effects Movie Guide, Godzilla's atomic breath is composed of Cherenkov radiation.[8] In the novelization of Godzilla vs. Kong, however, Dr. Nathan Lind speculates that the energy which comprises his atomic breath is "tied more closely to quantum states."

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong writer Brian Bucellato stated that Godzilla's atomic breath "has a radioactive signature similar to [K]ryptonite," Superman's greatest weakness.[9] This allowed Godzilla to nearly fatally injure Superman.

In Shin Godzilla, Godzilla's atomic rays were briefly described as "photons."

In the GODZILLA anime trilogy, Godzilla Earth's atomic breath (and by extension Godzilla Filius') is a highly-accelerated charged particle beam.

According to director Takashi Yamazaki, the nature of Godzilla's atomic breath in Godzilla Minus One is similar to the implosion method of detonating an atomic bomb, whereby nuclear material condenses towards the center all at once and detonates once it reaches a point of critical mass.[10]

Heat

Regardless of its form, Godzilla's atomic breath yields incredibly high temperatures that cause a concentrated combustion effect. Godzilla's atomic breath is also referred to as a Heat Ray, due to its typical tendency to start fires, burn any substance touched, and inflict tremendous pain on other beings.

The temperatures of atomic breath attacks vary greatly between the different versions of Godzilla or entities using it. The Heisei Godzilla's standard atomic breath alone is 500,000 degrees Celsius,[11] while his Hyper Uranium Heat Ray has a temperature over 1,000,000 degree Celsius[12] and is hot enough to burn his mouth, and his more powerful Burn Spiral Heat Ray reaches a lower temperature of 900,000 degrees Celsius.

The Monsterverse Godzilla's atomic breath has a minimum temperature of 20,000 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the Sun's surface.[13]

The version of Godzilla in Godzilla Minus One, according to the films' novelization, has atomic breath hot enough to sublime the iron in Takao,[14] as well as the National Diet Building and surrounding buildings.[15]

Attack range

The range of Godzilla's atomic breath varies from incarnations, but it is naturally a beam-based attack that functions as a high-ranged projectile weapon. It covers over a distance of multiple city blocks as with the original Godzilla and most other incarnations, to atmosphere-breaching heights as with Shin Godzilla, or even reach outer space as with the Final Wars Godzilla.

The most extreme cases includes Godzilla Earth being able to destroy objects outside of Earth's gravitational pull such as an asteroid of a Moon-rivaling mass, and the Monsterverse Godzilla drilling a hole into the Earth that would breach the real-life Earth's outer core.

Bioluminescence

Godzilla naturally glows in some capacity as he charges up his atomic breath and sometimes while he utilizes it as well. Typically, this extends to his dorsal plates, but it also occurs in his mouth and eyes for certain incarnations.

In Shin Godzilla, Godzilla's neck (along his vestigial gills), patches of his chest, and the tip of his tail glow purple along with his dorsal plates when using his atomic rays, and his Anti-Flash Defensive Membrane glowed purple during his initial usage.

In some cases, Godzilla glows all around such as in Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex and Godzilla vs. Megalon (2023) whenever he enters his special state, and in the Monsterverse, where he progressively grows more bioluminescent over the course of his appearances.

Physical form

The atomic breath itself has taken on many physical manifestations varying across the incarnations.

In the Showa era, Godzilla's atomic breath is a mist-like blast of concentrated vapor that progresses into a more concentrated beam of fiery radiation.

In the Heisei era, Godzilla's atomic breath initially functions like past depictions before becoming a sort of fiery laser-like beam of radiation.

For TriStar Pictures' two takes on the character, the atomic breath is a glowing radioactive beam of fire and energy with some fluid-like properties.

In the Millennium era, Godzilla's atomic breath is a fiery plasma-like blast of energy with explosive properties.

In the Monsterverse, the atomic breath is conditionally a blast of fire-like radioactive energy that naturally manifests as a concentrated beam fluctuating with light and power. It over time becomes more laser like and focused.

In the Reiwa era, Godzilla's atomic breath takes on many unique forms that often resemble past depictions while standing out in their own distinction.

In Shin Godzilla, the atomic breath initially projects as a bombarment of a smoke like gas that quickly spreads around the surrounding environment before igniting into a raging fire that spreads just as quickly before focusing into an incredibly thin, but powerful beam of heat and radiation with a purple hue as opposed to the traditional blue.

In the GODZILLA anime trilogy, the atomic breath is a highly-accelerated charged particle beam that manifests as electricity throughout Godzilla's dorsal region before forming into a powerful electric beam that forms in front of his mouth on his asymmetrically permeable shield before firing. This depiction is sharply precise and tremendously powerful, causing enormous explosions upon impact.

In Shinkalion the Movie, Godzilla's atomic breath is portrayed as a beam of energy that spirals in a ball when it initially manifests in his mouth before projecting out in a focused blast that is blue in color with yellow highlights.

In Godzilla Singular Point, the atomic breath is a focused laser-like beam of energy with rings that form in front of Godzilla before and while the weapon is fired. It is plasma like at first before it becomes more energy-based like with other Reiwa era depictions.

In the series of festival-presented Godzilla short-films starting with Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the atomic breath is identical to its depiction and functionality in Godzilla Final Wars but less explosive and more refined in energy.

In Godzilla (Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex) and its sequel, Godzilla's atomic breath is akin to the Heisei Godzilla's atomic breath, but is as focused and laser like as Millennium era and other Reiwa era depictions of the attack.

In Godzilla (Godzilla Minus One), Godzilla's atomic breath heavily builds up within his body before blasting out as a powerful blast of radioactive energy that builds up mass at a target upon contact before triggering a massive nuclear explosion with a city-pulverizing blast, intense vacuum-like gusts of wind that expel outwards before sucking inwards, and radioactive fallout that occurs the form of black precipitation formed by the intense heat and energy of the weapon. As such, this depiction of the atomic breath is the first to function as an actual nuclear bomb, though it is delivered in a powerful laser-like expungement of nuclear material like that of Shin Godzilla and the Monsterverse Godzilla.

Kinetic force

The thrust-power of Godzilla's atomic breath varies across incarnations and is even absent in certain depictions. But whenever it is shown, the push-back caused by the beam is intense.

In the case of the second-generation Showa Godzilla, the atomic breath possesses enough thrust power to propel the 20,000-metric-ton King of the Monsters through the air at speeds of up to Mach 1 and can allow him to catch up to Hedorah's flying form.

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, the atomic breath held Mechagodzilla's own mouth beam in a standstill during their Beam-Fight.

In the Millennium era, the atomic breath is capable of sending other monsters flying, such as Mothra in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack and Kiryu in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. In Godzilla Final Wars, the atomic breath was more than powerful enough to send Ebirah and Hedorah flying out of Tokyo Bay and into the city. A subsequent blast pushed the duo and a building into another structure prior to the explosion that killed them. Similarly, it succeeded in pushing back Monster X with a surprise point-blank blast. Additionally, his Burning G Spark Heat Ray sent the 100,000-metric-ton Keizer Ghidorah into outer space just before blasting the monster to pieces.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a split-sec blast of the atomic breath sent the over 141,000-ton Monsterverse Ghidorah knocked off his feet. A later blast was utilized to push the giant extraterrestrial dragon into a building to set him up for Mothra to ensnare in her silk. In Godzilla vs. Kong, the atomic breath sent Kong during a mid-air leap flying over a tremendous distance, the kinetic force of the less-than-a-second blast sending him falling to the ground. Later on, the energy depleted weapon temporarily held its own against Mechagodzilla's proton scream in a Beam-Fight.

In GODZILLA: The Planet Eater, a point-blank blast of atomic breath effortlessly forced Ghidorah's middle head back into the portal from whence it came.

At a height of 100-meters in Godzilla Singular Point, Godzilla was powerful enough for his atomic breath to push back Jet Jaguar as it obliterated the robot.

In Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, Godzilla's atomic breath in his special state was powerful enough to match Gigan Rex's enhanced chest beam. In the short-film's sequel, a split-second blast was capable of blocking a physical blow from Megalon.

Energy coloration

The atomic breath has taken on many colors over the years due to its various compositions in its numerous depictions. Originally white, the trademark coloration of the atomic breath has come to be blue. The explanation behind the hue for many incarnations is the presence of Cherenkov Radiation, a form of radiation with short wavelengths and high frequencies, hence the associated blue glow.

Weaknesses

As powerful at the atomic breath is, it does have its limitations.

In many cases, the user's use of atomic breath requires time to charge it before firing, which can allow some enemies the opportunity to react and counter it.

The usage and power of the atomic breath is also often reliant on the user's available energy. In Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Megaguirus is able to prevent Godzilla from firing his atomic breath by stinging him and absorbing his energy as he charges his attack. In Shin Godzilla, Godzilla needed to rest and recover his energy after unleashing his Heat Rays on Tokyo and the attacking B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers. During Operation Yashiori later in the film, while Godzilla was not forced into hibernation, he could not use his Heat Rays for extended periods of time without having to cease attacks with them and recover energy. This is also carried over in Godzilla vs. Evangelion Ride after using his atomic breath on King Ghidorah it exhausted Godzilla and left him vurunable if not for the Evangelion Units assistance Godzilla would been a sitting duck for Ghidorah.

In the Monsterverse, Godzilla's atomic breath is less powerful if his energy levels are depleted, which allowed Mechagodzilla to overpower him in their beam clash in Godzilla vs. Kong. Arvid Nelson also stated that Godzilla is unable to use his Atomic Breath while his dorsal plates are shattered as they stabilize his atomic energy.[16] Shown during his fight against MUTO Prime used her Sonic Roar to shatter Godzilla's dorsal plates and he he is unable to use them and could only use the nuclear pulse instead.

The user of the atomic breath attack may also be vulnerable to it themselves. In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Admiral Taizo Tachibana opened a wound in Godzilla's neck using a D-03 Missile, which resulted in the God of Destruction inadvertently firing the beam out of the wound, causing him pain and sending him sinking to the bottom of Tokyo Bay bleeding after two attempt to use his atomic breath. After a third attempt to use his atomic breath, he exploded. In Godzilla Minus One, the act of firing an atomic breath leaves burns on Godzilla's face, neck, and chest, which he needs to regenerate before firing another blast. When Koichi Shikishima flew his Kyushu J7W1 Shinden filled with explosives into Godzilla's mouth, with the plane detonating shortly after, the pent up energy from Godzilla attempting to fire his atomic breath caused his body to rupture and crumble to pieces.

Some entities have the ability to reflect blasts of atomic breath. In Godzilla vs. Biollante, the Super X2 was designed to reflect Godzilla's atomic breath using its built in Fire Mirror (ファイヤーミラー,   Faiyā Mirā), which opens up at the front of the vehicle. Multiple versions of Mothra have used their scales to reflect Godzilla's atomic breath, such as the version in the Heisei era Godzilla films or the version in the GODZILLA Anime Trilogy continuity, or cause it to backfire, such as the version in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS. In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, SpaceGodzilla was able to reflect Godzilla's atomic breath using his Photon Reactive Shield (フォトン・リアクティブ・シールド,   Foton Riakutibu Shīrudo), a crystal-like barrier he can put up at will. Psycho Ranger SpaceGodzilla also did the same the thing in Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II.

Some entities have displayed the ability to absorb blasts of atomic breath. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mechagodzilla has a Diamond Coating (ダイヤモンド・コーティング,   Daiyamondo Kōtingu) on its armor, which allows it to absorb Godzilla's atomic breath and Rodan's Uranium Heat Ray (an attack similar in nature to Godzilla's own Heat Ray), and use the energy to power its Plasma Grenade. In the Monsterverse, the blade of Kong's battle axe is made from a dorsal fin of Godzilla's species, allowing it to absorb blasts from Godzilla's atomic breath, powering the weapon's attacks.

Other users

Anguirus

In an earlier draft of Godzilla Raids Again, Anguirus was meant to utilize atomic breath. Though the idea was scrapped for the film, he demonstrates this ability in Rampage Godzilla and Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again.

Minilla

Minilla started out using smoke rings instead of the traditional atomic breath, though later on Minilla would learn to use a true atomic breath. The atomic breath is similar to Godzilla's traditional atomic breath. In Godzilla Final Wars, Minilla fired an atomic breath before he and Godzilla depart from Tokyo.

Godzilla Tower

In Godzilla vs. Gigan, the Godzilla Tower erected at World Children's Land was built with a powerful blue laser in its mouth by its alien creators. The tower's beams were strong enough to severely damage the real Godzilla.

LittleGodzilla/Godzilla Junior

Godzilla Junior using his atomic breath against Destoroyah in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

In Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, Little Godzilla was able to use an atomic breath-like ability in the form of bubble-like sparks. In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, after the explosion of Baas Island, he absorbed the radiation from the blast and grew into the adolescent Godzilla Junior, gaining the ability to fire a proper atomic breath, which he used against the Aggregate and Flying Forms of Destoroyah.

Godzilla Junior is also able to do it in Godzilla Island.

King Godzilla

Being a clone of Godzilla created by Mad Oniyama, he is able to fire an atomic breath like the original. He is also able to combine it with his King-Ghidorah-head arms’ gravity beams into a single powerful attack.

Cyber Godzilla

Cyber Godzilla firing his atomic breath in Godzilla: The Series episode "Monster Wars: Part 2"

Unlike his organic form, Cyber Godzilla is capable of using an atomic breath attack, which is blue in color as opposed to his son's green atomic breath. Along with the difference in color, Cyber Godzilla's atomic breath is more akin to a blowtorch as it is more fluid and fire-like as opposed to his son's more concentrated beam. Additionally, the breath attack isn't built-up and charged before he fires it. Lastly, Cyber Godzilla's atomic breath forms in front of his throat inside his mouth as opposed to the tradition of projecting from his throat concentrated and honed.

Komodithrax

Komodithrax possesses an atomic breath attack which is blue in color. This blast is fairly straight, though it does have a flame-like appearance to it. Komodithrax also does not have a visible charge up for her atomic breath. She first uses it in her first battle against the Giant Turtle, blasting a glacier ridge and burying him under chunks of ice.

Dororin

Dororin disguised as Godzilla

While disguised as Godzilla, Dororin was able to copy and use Godzilla’s atomic breath.

Trilopods

One of the Godzilla-Trilopod hybrids utilizing its atomic breath on the nearby CKRF forces

After three Trilopods absorbed Godzilla's DNA in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, they gained the ability to fire their own atomic beams. One of the individuals utilized their atomic breath to incinerate the nearby CKR forces during the immense fight in Los Angeles when the tide of battle persistently shifted between the two opposing sides. This was the only time that the atomic breath was utilized by a Trilopod since the other two Godzilla-Trilopod hybrids were killed before either of them had the opportunity to demonstrate it as well.

Hellbats

A Hellbat posessed by Godzilla

The Hellbats that were possessed by Godzilla acquired some of Godzilla's traits, including the ability to fire their own atomic breaths. One of the Hellbats shot out a spirt of atomic breath. Possessed, the hellbats played a key role in Godzilla's triumph over the God-demon and his departure from Hell. Each individual charging their own blast of the weapon, the horde formed a massive blast of energy that projected from Godzilla. Surrounded by spirals of energy, the attack completely obliterated the God-demon and cleaved a massive hole in the mountain that formed a path for Godzilla to scale the mountain and reach the Toreii where he faded out of Hell.

Dagon

Dagon and his mortal enemy, MUTO Prime

Though never shown using it, Dagon is implied to have an atomic breath attack much like Godzilla due to being similar and likely related to him. When asked if Dagon was capable of atomic breath, Arvid Nelson, the writer of Godzilla: Aftershock, said, "I don't see why not."[17]

Chibi Godzilla

Chibi Godzilla Insta-Heat Ray.png

Though Chibi Godzilla was only capable of breathing fire in his earliest appearances, he was given the ability to fire atomic breath just like that of his father in Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. He often fires this breath purely from excitement. When his destructive urges overwhelm him, his atomic breath leaks from his nostrils.

Godzilla-kun

Godzilla-kun firing his atomic breath

Godzilla-kun is capable of firing the atomic breath, which he typically utilizes against evil monsters such as King Ghidorah.

Evangelion Unit-01 "G" Awakening

Evangelion Unit-01 "G" Awakening using it's atomic breath

In P Godzilla vs. Evangelion: G Cell Awakening after Evangelion Unit-01 was mutated by Godzilla's atomic breath into it's "G" Awakening mode form. It was able to fire a purple atomic breath beam. Which was used against on King Ghidorah obliterating the the three headed dragon.

Green Godzilla Kaiju Zord

The Zord is able to fire a beam that is similar to the atomic breath.

Megatron Type Godzilla

According to the Transformers x Godzilla toy bio of Megatron Type Godzilla on Takara-Tommy website, Megatron, after scanning Godzilla's cells and becoming Megatron Type Godzilla, he is capable of using Godzilla's atomic breath with his weapons or from his mouth in his Godzilla-like beast mode's head.

Trivia

Concept art displaying Godzilla's scrapped atomic breath
  • While the Godzilla featured in TriStar's 1998 American film does not possess atomic breath, instead having a non-radioactive "Power Breath," concept art shows him firing a traditional blue ray of energy.
  • In the Godzilla: The Series episode "Trust No One", the DNA Mimic absorbed Godzilla's DNA, though whether it could fire its own atomic breath is unknown.
  • In the Game Boy Advance video game Godzilla: Domination!, Rodan can release a radioactive mist from specialized glands located in his torso area. He also can fire an "Atomic Heat Ray," which ironically takes the form of a fireball rather than a beam.
  • In Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, Megaguirus can copy other monsters' beams, including the atomic breaths of the various playable Godzillas.
  • If Godzilla: Rulers of Earth continued, artist Matt Frank entertained the possibility that Zilla could reproduce and gain the TriStar Godzilla's "power breath" ability, but stated that neither he nor his offspring could use the green atomic breath used by Godzilla in Godzilla: The Series because IDW Publishing lacked the rights to that version of the character.[18]
  • The scrapped kaiju Ghost Godzilla would have possessed atomic breath.
  • Multiple kaiju and mechas possess abilities that are similar to or are foils of Godzilla's atomic breath:
    • Fake Godzilla could fire a laser imitation of the atomic breath. Similarly, multiple versions of Mechagodzilla imitate Godzilla's atomic breath with their own beam attacks: the Heisei Mechagodzilla has the Mega Buster, Kiryu has Twin Maser Cannons in its mouth; the version of Mechagodzilla in the film Ready Player One has blast similar to the flame-like atomic breath used by Godzilla in the 2014 Godzilla film; and the Monsterverse Mechagodzilla has its Proton Scream.
    • Fire Rodan's Uranium Heat Beam is likened to Godzilla's atomic breath, although not called an atomic breath.
    • Bagan can fire a plasma beam that is near-identical to the atomic breath, though it is unknown whether or not it is meant to be the same attack.
    • Destoroyah's Oxygen Destroyer Ray is in some ways a foil of Godzilla's atomic breath, both being similar in nature and alluding to the weapons that created their respective users.
    • Megaguirus was able to project a large fireball using energy she absorbed from Godzilla.
    • Shimo can project an intensely powerful beam of radiation and energy similar to Godzilla's atomic breath but with the effect of lowering temperatures to the point of forming ice instantaneously on an atomic level, by definition bringing a target's temperature to sub-zero on contact and freezing its composing atoms in place.
