— Anguirus reading Mothra's invitation, which is sitting on his face (Get Going! Godzilland) |
Anguirus (アンギラス is a juvenile Anklyosaurus Angirasu)kaiju who appears in Gakken's 1994-1996 educational Get Going! Godzilland original video animations (OVAs). Alongside his best friend Godzilla, Anguirus was one of the inhabitants of Godzilland and often learnt helpful lessons from Mothra.
Name
- Main article: Anguirus#Name.
Anguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス, upon which the monster's design is based. The name was chosen from several names proposed by employees of Ankirosaurusu)Toho during production of Godzilla Raids Again.
Design
This Anguirus is displayed in a super-deformed "chibi" style, with a short, rounded body with no defined neck, a bipedal build, a bright orange spiky carapace with yellow spikes and a very large head and eyes. His skin is entirely blue in color and can vary between either pale or dark blue in episodes. Interestingly, the horn on Anguirus's face is instead portrayed as being merged with his mouth and the same color as the rest of his body as opposed to being a clearly separate horn like in other Anguirus designs.
In the first two episodes of the Get Going! Godzilland OVAs, released in 1994, Anguirus's design stayed more or less the same, except now being almost completely bipedal. In the traditional animated segments at the beginning and end of the first two episodes, Anguirus is much duller and brighter in color, being pale blue; however, in the more vibrantly-animated educational segments, Anguirus was colored a more vibrant, deep blue. The amount of spikes on his carapace also varied wildly between shots. His appearance in the "Addition" and "Subtraction" OVAs, released in 1996, was much more consistent, where he remained mid blue in color and possessed fewer spikes on his carapace; he was now also fully bipedal and slightly less hunched.
Personality
This depiction of Anguirus, like most of the other characters in the series, is portrayed as a childish monster. Anguirus is usually on the receiving end of slapstick, making him clumsy and prone to accidentally injuring himself, possibly in reference to the many injuries sustained by the character across his film appearances. Like all of the monsters on Godzilland, Anguirus cares for his friends and enjoys having fun in various ways. However, he frequently gets into fights with his close friend Godzilla, although they always make amends. Anguirus also demonstrates himself to be a good friend as he offers to give Godzilla his own cake after he realized he'd miscounted the number of cakes needed for a party and made too few.
Origins
Anguirus is a resident of Godzilland alongside various other juvenile kaiju.

"You Can Read! You Can Write! Hiragana!"
While chasing Mothra through the forests of Godzilland, Anguirus tripped over a tree stump, falling onto his carapace. Mothra dropped a letter to him inviting him to try some strawberries she'd grown, which landed on his face and left him wondering what it said. Anguirus later got into a fight with Godzilla and ran away from the latter's atomic breath, sending him accidentally stumbling into the picnic that Mothra was hosting, which was already being attended by Baragon, Rodan and King Ghidorah (Get Going! Godzilland). When the two both found out that the others had already eaten all of the strawberries that Mothra was preparing for them, they were shocked and accused the others of being "heartless". After being confronted about the envelope, Godzilla tearfully confessed that he couldn't read, with Anguirus following shortly after. After Ghidorah consoled Godzilla and offered him to learn the Hiragana alphabet, Godzilla decided to do so alongside Anguirus.
The various lessons showed Anguirus being bitten by an ant, caught by a squid, drowned in an ocean containing dolphins, rescued by rubber rings, piloting a flying saucer, and holding a rice ball in a picture book before Anguirus helped go over (a), (i), (u), (e) and (o). The lessons then showed Rodan stealing a rice cracker off Anguirus for himself, Anguirus banging a drum, Anguirus attempting to use a high bar, Godzilla and Anguirus laughing at a swan with a tan before being kicked by it, and later dancing in a circle with all the other monsters before biting Godzilla's tail and briefly taking part in the dots song.
Anguirus then took part in a game of shiritori with the other monsters and laughed at Godzilla when he lost.
"You Can Count! Counting 1-2-3!"
Anguirus decided to plan a birthday party for his best friend Godzilla, as the two cared for each other very much. Anguirus prepared tea and cake for the birthday party, which drew the attention of Rodan, who asked if he could eat some. This irritated Anguirus, who told Rodan that the party hadn't started yet. Later, after wishing Godzilla a happy birthday once the party had commenced, Anguirus announced it was time to eat. However, he miscounted, and accidentally gave the last cake to Rodan instead of Godzilla. Godzilla became very upset over this and began angrily crying, with Anguirus being shocked that he had made his own best friend cry. He then realized his mistakes of making only 5 cakes when there were 6 attendants to the party, prompting him to apologize to his friend and gave his own cake to Godzilla. When he did this, however, King Ghidorah appeared and asked for more cake. When the three Ghidorah heads got into an argument about which head owned the cake, Anguirus got very stressed and worried, not knowing how many heads Ghidorah had. Mothra then reappeared to console Anguirus, telling him that she brought extra cakes just in case something would go wrong. After Godzilla asked Mothra to teach them how to count, Anguirus joined in. At the end of the party segment, Anguirus was seen happily sticking Godzilla with his carapace.
Anguirus watched as Godzilla jumped on ten red boxes provided by Mothra to form a tower so that he could learn to count to ten, with King Ghidorah helping throw boxes to Mothra so she could throw them to Godzilla. Anguirus then ran in terror when Godzilla started knocking the boxes down so that he could learn to count down. Anguirus later went mushroom hunting with Godzilla and the two competed to see how many mushrooms each of them could find with King Ghidorah acting as the referee - Godzilla won the first round five to three, Anguirus won the second round seven to six, and neither of them could find mushrooms in the third, although Godzilla pulled Baragon out of the ground after mistaking him for a bamboo shoot. Later, Anguirus was one of the monsters ordered into a line by King Ghidorah, who then asked a series of questions about the positioning of the monsters. Anguirus later boarded a numbered train with the other monsters, sitting in the fifth carriage as Mothra asked a series of questions about numbers, with Anguirus correctly answering the first question about Baragon's carriage. Finally, Anguirus listened to King Ghidorah as he rapped about the "big numbers after ten", climbing a tower of numbers next to Godzilla's tower.
At the end of the episode, Godzilla wrote a letter to Mothra and told her that Anguirus and Baragon were arguing on who got to go onto the swing. When they couldn't come to a conclusion, the two other kaiju suggested that they play a game of ladder lottery (a common decision-making game in Japan).
"Let's Play with Godzilla! Addition"
One day, Anguirus and Godzilla had a disagreement and fought as a result. Anguirus was later sleeping in his hammock when Mechagodzilla approached him and was shocked when Mechagodzilla referred to Godzilla as "violent" and that Anguirus would have more fun with him. Anguirus countered that Mechagodzilla was also violent, and though Mechagodzilla dismissed Anguirus' claims, the robot proceeded to set the hammock on fire with his eye beams. Mechagodzilla then grabbed Anguirus against his will and flew away with him despite Godzilla's attempts to save him. After Godzilla and the rest of his friends ate food to stop their hunger and made peace with a group of ants, they arrived at Mechagodzilla's cave and answered all four of his addition questions correctly, prompting the robot to free Anguirus, who reunited with his friends as Mechagodzilla cried. Mechagodzilla then apologized to them after Mothra convinced him to do so, with Anguirus accepting the apology alongside the others despite having been kidnapped by him. The group allowed Mechagodzilla to join their final song about addition.
"Let's Play with Godzilla! Subtraction"
Anguirus quickly ran to Gojirin's birthday party as he was running late, carrying a basket of apples in his mouth. He managed to show up just after she blew out the candles on her cake, ignored Godzilla's criticisms of him being late, and handed the basket of apples to Gojirin. Godzilla and Baragon quickly became jealous and each attempted to outcompete him, with Godzilla picking seven apples and Baragon picking nine, though they each ended up picking so many that Gojirin couldn't eat them all. Anguirus then took part in a song about subtraction. Later, Anguirus was surfing on a log alongside Godzilla in a lake when Rodan appeared and informed them that Mechagodzilla was trying to kidnap Gojirin, causing them to fall off the log. The three of them rushed to the pier where Mechagodzilla was trying to kidnap Gojirin and confronted the robot, who challenged them to a subtraction quiz. Anguirus correctly answered the second and fourth questions. When all five of Mechagodzilla's questions were answered correctly, he flew away in tears and therefore allowed Gojirin to reunite with Anguirus and Godzilla, with Anguirus demonstrating annoyance when Gojirin hugged Godzilla. Anguirus later played jump-rope with the other monsters when Mechagodzilla appeared with Mothra, apologizing for his actions towards them. Once again, the other monsters accepted Mechagodzilla's apology and invited him to play with them.

Trivia
- A color scheme similar to that of this Anguirus would later be utilized a decade later for Anguirus' Millennium incarnation, which also depicted the monster with bluish skin and yellow spikes.
