Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ is a juvenile robotic duplicate of Mekagojira)Godzilla who appears in Gakken's 1996 educational Get Going! Godzilland original video animations (OVAs). Unlike the other residents of Godzilland, Mechagodzilla was a loner who frequently antagonized the other kaiju, though these antics were merely misguided attempts by Mechagodzilla to make friends and to fit in.
Name
- Main article: Mechagodzilla#Name.
Mechagodzilla's name is a combination of "mecha," which is derived from "mechanical," and "Godzilla" (ゴジラ. Gojira)
Design
This Mechagodzilla is heavily based off of the Showa Mechagodzilla, albeit in a super-deformed or "chibi" style and with a few differences, including noticeable pupils in his eyes, only five teeth, and an overall light blue color as opposed to the Showa Mechagodzilla's silver.
Personality
Mechagodzilla is a very lonely individual who is jealous of Godzilla and his many friends, prompting him to kidnap Godzilla's friends (Anguirus and Gojirin) on two separate occasions in efforts to force them to become his friends. Mechagodzilla also demonstrates some more sadistic qualities, taunting Godzilla while kidnapping Anguirus and laughing at him when he is unable to use his atomic breath, as well as standing on Anguirus while demanding he be his friend. Prior to being accepted by the group, the other kaiju seemed to fear him, with Anguirus accusing him of being violent and Gojirin being reluctant to hang out with him. However, Mechagodzilla also shows remorse when Mothra helps him realize his actions were wrong, apologizing to them and becoming friends with them.
Origins
Mechagodzilla is a resident of Godzilland alongside various other juvenile kaiju. His relation to Godzilla, if any, is left unknown. While he appears to usually behave like a living being rather than a robot, he references his "A.I." before the subtraction quiz, leaving his true nature unknown.

"Let's Play with Godzilla! Addition"
Mechagodzilla was flying in the air alone above Godzilland when he spotted Godzilla and Anguirus arguing and fighting, commenting that they were such good friends they could fight with each other. Mechagodzilla later approached Anguirus while he was sleeping in his hammock, where he accused Godzilla of being violent and that Anguirus would have more fun with him, shocking Anguirus. Anguirus was annoyed at this and replied that Mechagodzilla was also violent; as Mechagodzilla insisted that wasn't true, he proceeded to set Anguirus' hammock on fire with his eye beams. Mechagodzilla then grabbed Anguirus against his will and flew away with him, ignoring Godzilla's attempts to stop him and laughing at him when he tried to use his atomic breath but failed. Godzilla eventually arrived at Mechagodzilla's cave along with Gojirin, Baragon, and Mothra after eating and dealing with angry ants, where they agreed to a deal with Mechagodzilla that they could have Anguirus back if they answered his quiz correctly. Mechagodzilla asked four questions about addition, all of which were answered correctly by the trio of young monsters, causing Mechagodzilla to cry as Anguirus reunited with his friends. Mothra approached the robot and told him to apologize, as that way, he could become friends with the others. Upon doing so, Mechagodzilla was accepted by the group and engaged in a song about addition with them.
"Let's Play with Godzilla! Subtraction"
As Gojirin walked onto a pier by a lake, Mechagodzilla called out to her and landed behind her, suggesting they hang out together. Gojirin was reluctant to do so, as she knew that his behavior could be rough. Mechagodzilla commented that this wasn't true before firing his eye beams into the lake in response, scaring Gojirin as he then grabbed her hand and tried to force her to hang out with him. Rodan heard her calls for help and alerted Godzilla and Anguirus, who rushed to the pier to confront Mechagodzilla. The robot refused to give up and challenged them to a subtraction quiz. Mechagodzilla asked the others five questions, all of which were answered correctly by Godzilla and Anguirus. Mechagodzilla then flew away in tears, allowing Gojirin to reunite with the pair as a result. Mothra came across Mechagodzilla as he was flying through the air, where he explained that he had been unkind to Gojirin. Mothra then took him back to the other monsters as they played jump-rope, where Mechagodzilla apologized to them all. The other kaiju ultimately forgave Mechagodzilla and allowed him to play various games with them.
Abilities
Eye beams
Mechagodzilla is capable of shooting eye beams which were powerful enough to cause Anguirus's hammock to catch on fire. They are red, yellow, and purple in color, and resemble the Showa Mechagodzilla's Space Beams. It is unclear how much control he has over them as he fires them in a fits of rage and seemingly at random, such as when he used them on the hammock mere seconds after denying allegations that he is violent.
Physical capabilities
Mechagodzilla is strong enough to easily lift and carry other monsters of similar size, such as Anguirus and Gojirin.
Intelligence
Mechagodzilla appears to be knowledgeable about both addition and subtraction before Mothra's lessons, as he is able to come up with quizzes to test the other monsters.
Flight
Mechagodzilla is capable of flight using propulsion jets in its feet, again similar to the Showa Mechagodzilla.

Trivia
- This Mechagodzilla is the first incarnation of Mechagodzilla to be a friend of Godzilla rather than an enemy, albeit after starting off as enemies. Different Mechagodzilla incarnations who are at least temporarily allies of Godzilla appear in the 1997-1998 television series Godzilla Island and several IDW Publishing comics such as Godzilla: Rulers of Earth and Godzilla: The Half-Century War.
- This Mechagodzilla is the only incarnation of Mechagodzilla in audio-visual media who reuses the design of the Showa Mechagodzilla, as the Godzilla Island, Godziban, and Godzilla: Attack on Tokyo Mechagodzillas all reuse the design of the Heisei Mechagodzilla.
- However, the Showa Mechagodzilla's design has been repeatedly reused in print media such as various IDW Publishing comics.
