Grotogauros
|
Grotogauros (グロデガウロス is a Garoga hybrid Gurodegaurosu)kaiju who first appeared in the 26th and final episode of the 1973 Toho tokusatsu series Zone Fighter.
Design
Out of all the Terror-Beasts made from Garogas transforming or fusing, Grotogauros possesses the most traits relating to the aliens' prior forms, retaining their antennae and webbed hands. Grotogauros' body is mainly a brownish-orange. There is a circular device mounted on his chest, with a yellow oval at its center.
Origins
Grotogauros was created after five Cobalt Garoga agents failed to obtain the files on a neutronic power source, and were beaten by Hikaru Sakimori underwater. These five agents formed a circle before rapidly spinning and transforming into the aquatic kaiju.

Zone Fighter
"Pulverize! The Garoga Gamma-X Strategy"
Grotogauros emerged once Hikaru Sakimori had successfully defeated the entire Cobalt Garoga squadron, with the defeated aliens combining to form the monster. The battle from this point onwards was incredibly difficult - Zone Fighter was repeatedly beaten down by Grotogauros, and the monster's ability to use illusions only made the battle harder. Eventually, Zone Fighter managed to force his way past the illusions and defeated the kaiju.
Abilities
Physical abilities
Grotogauros is one of the most powerful Terror-Beasts, as a result of being a fusion of five elite Cobalt Garoga Agents, and can throw around opponents with ease. He knocked Zone Fighter backwards into the water twice, with just a single slap. He easily grappled and threw Zone around into the water, as well as attempting to drown the hero by pushing him underwater repeatedly. After throwing Zone Fighter underwater, Grotogauros made his way out of the ocean and attempted to rampage near a fishing village, stomping on a building but being stopped by Zone Fighter after the hero jumped out of the water. While the hallucinogenic powder was affecting Zone, Grotogauros ran up and kicked him to the ground, while also kicking him down a second time immediately after the hero tried standing up. Grotogauros was also strong and fast enough to catch one of Zone Fighter's Meteor Punches, flipping the hero over afterwards. Grotogauros then began to swipe his webbed hands at Zone's frame, striking him across the head at first, but missing his other swings. After having his jaw cracked, Grotogauros attempted to swipe at the hero, only to just barely miss and fall to the ground.
Amphibiousness
Grotogauros was formed underwater at the bottom of the ocean. Afterwards, he swam to the surface and battled Zone Fighter above water. When he was fatally wounded, Grotogauros attempted to take Zone with him, grabbing onto the hero and submerging himself into the water before exploding.
Smoke spray
Grotogauros can breathe a white smoke from his mouth and if angered, from both nostrils. Its first use obscured Zone Fighter's vision and cause him to yell out in frustration. When Grotogauros deployed his mist a second time, explosions crackled across the ground. When Zone Fighter looked away from Grotogauros in order to cleanse his eyes of the illusions, Grotogauros angrily shot smoke from his nostrils, and did so again after Zone dodged his main mist spray.
Hallucinogenic Powder
Grotogauros can cause his opponent to hallucinate by emitting a near-invisible pink powder from his mouth. The hallucinations can range from multiple copies of himself appearing and disappearing in different places, some of those copies getting extremely close to the afflicted individual's face, Grotogauros appearing as his opponent's loved ones, or Grotogauros' body rapidly shifting hues and changing colors. When used against Zone Fighter, the powder initially made it seem like there were multiple versions of Grotogauros popping in and out of existence, with the hero falling to the ground when he tried attacking one of the illusions. When Zone Fighter readied his Meteor Missile Might, the powder made it seem like Zone Angel and Zone Junior were attacking him. According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), this attack is called the Hallucinogenic Powder (幻覚粉 Genkaku-ko).
Flamethrower
According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Grotogauros can breathe 10,000-degree Celsius flames from his mouth. This ability was unused in the show, however.
Tsunami
According to All Kaiju Kaijin (First Volume), Grotogauros can use his fins to stir up massive waves and eventually create huge tsunamis. Ultimately, this was not demonstrated in the show.
Intelligence
After having his jaw cracked, Grotogauros attempted to manipulate Zone Fighter by pretending to surrender by putting his webbed hands together in a begging motion. When this did not work, Grotogauros immediately went to rushing down the hero again. After his body was severely weakened by Zone Fighter's Meteor Missile Might, Grotogauros attempted to take Zone's life with him, as he grabbed onto the hero and fell into the ocean, exploding right after both of them were submerged underwater.
Durability
During his fight with Zone Fighter, Grotogauros was unaffected by the hero's initial physical attacks, which included Meteor Punches, Meteor Kicks, knees to his body, and being thrown to the ground. Even after Zone cleansed his eyes of the hallucinogenic powder and managed to finally gain the upper hand on Grotogauros, the Garoga hybrid was still able to endure all of the hero's physical strikes, including his head being grabbed by Zone's legs and flipped onto the ground as well as being punched and kicked in the face. The first signs of actual pain from the reptilian were when Zone hit Grotogauros with an especially strong punch the jaw. A cracking sound accompanied it, with Grotogauros then clutching at his mouth. Grotogauros narrowly clung to life after enduring two volleys of Zone's Meteor Missile Might, although he exploded underwater shortly thereafter.
