King Ghidorah (キングギドラ,   Kingu Gidora) is a juvenile monster who appears in Gakken's 1994-1996 educational Get Going! Godzilland original video animations (OVAs). One of several inhabitants of Godzilland, King Ghidorah learnt useful lessons from Mothra and often helped the others learn these lessons as well.

Name

Main article: King Ghidorah#Name.

The "Ghidorah" (ギドラ Gidora) part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ Hidora), which shares two of its three katakana characters with "Ghidorah."

Design

This King Ghidorah is based off of the Showa King Ghidorah, though in a super-deformed or "chibi" style and with a few differences: he lacks a crescent horn on each of his three heads, his wings are located on his back rather than to each side, his tails are proportionally smaller to the rest of the body, he has a wider body, and his necks are proportionally smaller. His heads appear to be adorned with hair/fur similar to the manes of his Showa counterpart.

Personality

Each of King Ghidorah's heads has a different personality but he is overall a kind monster, helping teach Godzilla and Anguirus the hiragana syllabary and being awarded a golden "ma-mi-mu-me-mo" as a reward for his honesty. King Ghidoah also appears to be one of the most intelligent monsters on the island, often taking a significant role in the educational segments. King Ghidorah's heads sometimes disagree with each other and get into arguments, such as when they fought over a cake at Godzilla's birthday party.

Origins

King Ghidorah is a resident of Godzilland alongside various other juvenile kaiju.

"You Can Read! You Can Write! Hiragana"

King Ghidorah was playing in a lake, with the left and right heads spitting water on the middle, until the middle head noticed Mothra and received a letter from her. All three heads read out the letter inviting them to a picnic to try some strawberries she had grown and they agreed to go. King Ghidorah arrived at the picnic but was annoyed to see Rodan already present and eating the strawberries without waiting for anyone else to arrive, though he was quick to indulge himself as well. Baragon then burrowed from the ground and ate a strawberry that fell off the table, joining them in their meal. Mothra then arrived and, surprised at Godzilla and Anguirus not being present, asked King Ghidorah if he'd seen Godzilla on his way to the picnic, though he had not seen either of them. While Mothra wondered why Godzilla or Anguirus hadn't arrived yet, King Ghidorah continued to tuck into the strawberries present. Godzilla and Anguirus then accidently stumbled onto the picnic while arguing, and though their argument was broken up by Mothra, they then complained when they learnt that the others had already eaten all of the strawberries. Baragon and King Ghidorah told them about the letter Mothra gave out, but both confessed that they couldn't read.

King Ghidorah and the other monsters then agreed to help them learn hiragana together, with the lessons showing King Ghidorah eating rice balls at a picnic on a hill in a picture book along with Godzilla, Rodan, and Baragon, engaging in a tug-of-war and laughing at gaudy fireflies. King Ghidorah then introduced (ma), (mi), (mu), (me), and (mo) while watching the full moon. The lesson showed him drinking at a lake before encountering a goddess (which was actually just Mothra dressed up as one), who asked him if he'd lost anything. After he confessed he hadn't, he was awarded for his honesty and the goddess returned to the lake. King Ghidorah then danced in a circle with all the other monsters and introduced (ka), (ki), (ku), (ke), and (ko), with Godzilla attaching diacritic marks to each character with his claws so that they became (ga), (gi), (gu), (ge), and (go). King Ghidorah then introduced the dots song which all the monsters took part in and featured various animals, objects, and other things.

King Ghidorah later took part in a game of shiritori with the other monsters and laughed at Godzilla when he lost.

"You Can Count! Counting 1-2-3!"

King Ghidorah arrived at Godzilla's birthday party and sat in between Mothra and Anguirus. After Godzilla cried when he wasn't given a cake and Anguirus realized he had miscounted and gave his own to Godzilla to make up for it, King Ghidorah complained too and his heads proceeded to fight over the cake that had been provided. Mothra was able to resolve both issues by providing extra cakes she'd made just in case of any problems. After everyone had eaten their cakes, Godzilla asked Mothra to teach them to count properly.

King Ghidorah watched as Godzilla jumped on ten red boxes provided by Mothra to form a tower so that he could learn to count to ten, with King Ghidorah helping throw boxes to Mothra so she could throw them to Godzilla. King Ghidorah then ran in terror when Godzilla started knocking the boxes down so he could learn how to count down. King Ghidorah later came across Godzilla and Anguirus as they competed to find mushrooms and helped them find out who had collected more, with Godzilla winning five to Anguirus's three. King Ghidorah acted once again as a referee in the next round, with Anguirus winning seven to Godzilla's six. They tried another round to see who had won the best of three but neither were able to find any mushrooms, though Godzilla did pick Baragon out of the ground as he was trying to sleep, having mistook him for a bamboo shoot. King Ghidorah then ordered the other monsters into a row and asked a series of questions about their positions, shouting at Godzilla when he noticed he was asleep. King Ghidorah later boarded a numbered train with the other monsters, sitting in the sixth and last carriage, as Mothra asked a series of questions about numbers. King Ghidorah later rapped about the "big numbers after ten", going up to 100, and had to catch Godzilla after he accidently jumped off a massive tower representing the number ten.

"Let's Play with Godzilla! Addition"

King Ghidorah made a brief appearance while the other kaiju sang a song about addition.

"Let's Play with Godzilla! Subtraction"

King Ghidorah briefly appeared once again as the other monsters sang about subtraction.

Abilities

Flight

Like most incarnations of the character, King Ghidorah is capable of flying. King Ghidorah uses this ability to travel between various parts of Godzilland and is also seen flying in parts of the OVAs' educational segments.

Gravity beams

King Ghidorah's gravity beams in Get Going! Godzilland

During his cameos in the second pair of OVAs, King Ghidorah was seen spitting out lightning bolts. Unusually, they were red in color as opposed to the usual yellow coloration of other incarnations' gravity beams.

Physical capabilities

Though King Ghidorah never fights any of the other monsters on the island, his heads hit each other during an argument and he is able to catch Godzilla when he falls from a high point.

Intelligence

King Ghidorah is one of the more intelligent monsters on the island, already knowing about hiragana and counting before Mothra's lessons.

Trivia

  • This is the only incarnation of King Ghidorah who is Godzilla's friend rather than his enemy, though the related characters Chibi Ghidorah and Chibi Godzilla are also friends in the various media they appear in.
  • Outside of brief silent cameos and appearances in the intro alongside Gigan and Moguera, King Ghidorah is noticeably absent from the second pair of OVAs, which were instead animated by Group Tac. However, all three of his voice actors returned to voice other characters: Akemi Okamura voiced Gojirin, Sakurako Kishiro voiced Mechagodzilla, and Rikako Aikawa replaced Junko Iwao as Anguirus.
