Robert Baldwin (ロバート・ボールドウィン is a Canadian- Robāto Bōrudowin)Japanese actor best known for his roles as Gordo in Super Fleet Sazer-X and Ramirez in Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger.
Biography
Baldwin was born in Kyoto, Japan to Canadian parents[1] on September 27, 1965.[2] He is the youngest of three children, with a brother two years older than him and a sister seven years older.[3] His parents had come to Japan five years prior on the ocean liner NYK Hikawa Maru[2] due to his father, a missionary, being assigned to Hiroshima.[3] He was raised in the Eba district of Naka, Hiroshima in Hiroshima Prefecture[2] and attended elementary school at the Canadian Academy in Kobe.[1] His father's work forced he and his parents to move back to Canada,[1] where he graduated middle and high school.[3] After high school, he used his knowledge of Japanese to work as a tour guide for a time.[3] Baldwin has cited a series of kabuki performances he participated in while in elementary school as an inspiration for his interest in acting.[1]
As an adult, Baldwin returned to Japan and worked in foreign trade, but went back to Canada after around 3 years.[3] He met a Japanese woman, Masae,[4] at a share house in Canada, and they were later married.[3] He and his wife traveled permanently to Japan in 1995.[3] Baldwin worked various jobs, including as an importer for a food company in Yamagata and a truck driver in Tokyo.[3] He came across a casting call for extras for television, which began his career in acting;[1] initially, he appeared in docudramas such as Unbelievable and The Sekai Gyoten News[3] while also working translation jobs on the side.[1] He made his film debut in 2002 with a bit part in Ten Shimoyama's Muscle Heat. The same year, he appeared in Toho's Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and went on to be hired for other tokusatsu films including Abaranger the Movie: Deluxe in Abare Summer, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, and Godzilla Final Wars. His first major role did not come until 2005, however, when he appeared as the recurring character Gordo in the television series Super Fleet Sazer-X. According to Baldwin, one of the producers at his audition for the role was enthused by his appearance, and insisted that he was right for the role.[1] Baldwin performed all of his own stunts for Sazer-X as, according to him, the studio could not find anyone who matched his appearance to work as a stunt double.[1] He reprised his role for the series' tie-in film Super Fleet Sazer-X the Movie.
Baldwin continued to appear in small roles for film and television thereafter, while also working in translation and interpreting. In 2012, after returning to Japan from an interpreting job in Miami, Florida, he was hired for Toei's 37th Super Sentai series, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger.[1] He played the recurring character Ramirez in the series—the alter ego of Kyoryu Cyan—marking him as the first ever Caucasian actor to portray a Sentai Ranger.[1] In 2022, Baldwin was cast as the voice of Ultraman Zearth in the English dub of Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Destined Crossroad.[5] Baldwin and his wife have four children; from youngest to eldest, they are: daughter Rei, son Toranosuke, and daughters Sara and Megumi.[4] Rei Baldwin appeared as a cast member on the variety show 3C! The Time of Your Life[3] between 2018 and 2021.
