A relative of actress and tarento Midori Utsumi, Utsumi was born in a liquor store. Utsumi liked to train his physique, and practiced with professional wrestlers at the Riki Sports Palace. Utsumi encouraged his son to join the Mifune Art Academy and become an actor, but Atsushi declined out of fear of acting in public. However, Atsushi later became an actor for a theater company and appeared in movies and television series such as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II and Ultraman Gaia. Susumu Utsumi eventually contracted diabetes and was repeatedly hospitalized and discharged, ultimately dying of diabetes. While Utsumi's date of death is unknown, his son has said he was approximately 52 or 53 at the time of his death.
