The N1-00 (ハイパワーレーザービーム車 Haipawā Rēzā Bīmusha, lit. High-Power Laser Beam Car) is a predecessor to the Maser Cannon which first appears in the 1984 Toho Godzilla film, The Return of Godzilla.
Name
The N1-00s are referred to as High-Power Laser Beam Cars (ハイパワーレーザービーム車 Haipawā Rēzā Bīmusha) in Japanese. Plaques at the Tokusatsu DNA exhibition use the alternate translation "Hi-Power Laserbeam Vehicle." The weapons are given the subtitle JGSDF Special Vehicle (陸上自衛隊特殊車両 Rikujōjieitai Tokushu Sharyō).[1] They may also be called by the full titles High-Power Laser Beam Car Type N1-00 (ハイパワーレーザービーム車N1-00型), such as on Cast's ornament, or JGSDF Special Vehicle Type N1-00 (陸上自衛隊特殊車両N1-00型).[4]
The publication Godzilla Fierce Fighting Super Encyclopedia refers to it by the shortened name Laser Beam Car (レーザービーム車 Rēzā Bīmusha).[5]
History
Heisei era
The Return of Godzilla
Like the Super X, the N1-00 was designed to defend Japan from an attack by other countries. Two of them were built, and were intended to be able to quickly subdue enemy forces using powerful lasers fired from their powerful dish-like weapons. When Godzilla attacked Tokyo, the N1-00s were brought into action, and fought back by firing multiple lasers at the kaiju. The lasers were at first highly effective, burning Godzilla's skin and forcing him to reel back in pain. Eventually, the lasers stopped having the intended effect, and the human pilots found themselves trying to escape from Godzilla, who followed them out of the Business District. Fortunately, the Super X arrived on the scene, and went on the offensive, buying the N1-00s enough time to retreat. Although the N1-00s didn't do any lasting damage to Godzilla, they successfully lured Godzilla away from Doctor Hayashida's laboratory.
