King Kong,
Son of Kong
Main article: Humans.
At some point in history, humans arrived on Skull Island and built a civilization with a giant wall to keep out the island's menagerie of dangerous creatures. They worshiped Kong, and sacrificed young women to him. When their god escaped, they tried to help keep him contained, but many perished in the attempt. In Son of Kong, the natives blamed Kong's kidnappers on their recent hard times, and refused to let them back on the island before they perished when it sank into the sea.

Son of Kong
Main articles: King Kong (RKO), Kiko.
King Kong was the god of the natives of Skull Island, a colossal bipedal ape possessing immense strength. Kong was captured by a film crew and met his demise after being brought to New York, leaving behind a son, Kiko. When filmmaker Carl Denham returned to the island, he befriended Kiko who helped him obtain the island's treasure and gave his life to ensure that Denham escaped the island as it sank beneath the sea.
Cave Bear

At least one gigantic bear lived on Skull Island, and attacked Kiko after spotting the humans in the jungle.
Arsinoitherium
Arsinoitherium-King-Kong-Minor-April-2020-02.jpg King Kong (cut)
Main article: Arsinoitherium.
A population of Arsinoitherium lived in the jungles of Skull Island. They were usually peaceful unless they were disturbed, which would then lead to them becoming aggressive and charging..
Arsinoitherium was one of two prehistoric animals that were intended for the same scene in the film which was actually filmed. Afterwards, Cooper had second thoughts about the Arsinoitherium and ordered the sequence to be reshot using a Styracosaurus, although the scene was eventually completely scrapped.

King Kong,
King Kong: The Island of the Skull,
The World of Kong
Main article: Human.
Humans had inhabited Skull Island for thousands of years. The first civilization of Skull Island natives dominated the island and built cities and monoliths all throughout it. It is possible that these first colonists brought the ancestors of the Kong with them from their original home. However, due to unknown circumstances, their civilization collapsed, and had been collapsed for at least one thousand years before the Venture's arrival.[1] By that time, the human culture on the island was not even descended from the original islanders. These new arrivals, in adapting to the unforgiving environment of Skull Island lived in the ruins of their predecessors' catacombs, and had regressed considerably. What crude garments they wore were knotted together out of their own hair and bits of bone[2]. Living in the shadow of their predecessors' great wall, the only thing keeping them safe from the horrors of the jungle, the crumbling coastline that lead to the savage waters also claimed its share of their lives. The bravest of their number would tether themselves together with crude ropes and pole-vault between rocks and sunken buildings to hunt for anemones, crabs, shellfish, and seaweed. Because of the scarcity of resources, Skull Islanders were always in fierce competition, and thus what someone else had could be taken by force, and thus the will of the strong prevailed. Their primitive societal structure was governed by a shaman-woman who facilitated sacrifices to Kong. While all the forces of nature were divine and mysterious to the Skull Islanders, none was more powerful than Kong. They believed that by offering him sacrifices timed with tremors in the earth, they might be granted respite from his wrath.[3] The men of their tribe went through facial scarification as a rite of passage, as they formed new identities represented by the markings on their face. The shaman women led the loosely guided tribe through their maternally transferred title, with each one surrounded by acolytes. The girl chosen for sacrifice was taken from her family, who were allowed to make her ceremonial necklace out of hair, feather, and bone, before they were offered, drugged or screaming, to the beast-god.

Volucerictis

King Kong,
The World of Kong
Volucerictis were insectivorous mammals boasting 15- to 18-inch-long wingspans related to Terapusmordax. At dusk they emerged from their roosts in caves or hollow trees to hunt with their impressive night vision. Being fiercely territorial, solitary individuals and mated pairs would tolerate no interlopers near their roosts, particularly when they were guarding young. It was not unheard of for individuals to die in airborne disputes. If a larger carnivore chose to prey on Volucerictis, they would defiantly fight, scratch and bite their opponents until their last breath.
Gaur
Guar.png
The World of Kong Gaur were a species of cattle, whose being identical to the Asiatic mainland species suggested that they had arrived on Skull Island recently, possibly in the last thousand years. This time frame suggested that they had been brought to the island by the original human inhabitants. The gaur survived surprisingly well in the jungle. Their horns made them formidable foes to their main predator, Venatosaurus, and their dark coloration allowed them to blend in with their jungle surroundings.
Burglar Monkey
Burglar Monkey.png
The World of Kong Burglar Monkeys were a species of one- to two-foot-long monkeys that were more akin to tarsiers and lorises than true monkeys. They could be found climbing in the jungle's high canopy eating fruits, nuts, flower buds, insects and eggs. Not being especially fast, or in possession of defensive structures, Burglar Monkeys avoided predators by hiding in communal dens during the day and emerging at dusk, when their keen senses allowed them a greater advantage.
Howler
Howler.png
The World of Kong Howlers were flying rodents with four- to five-foot-long wingspans that lived in the jungles of Skull Island. With their leathery wings, sharp teeth, eerie calls, and bulbous eyes, the bat-like predators searched the dark for birds, rats, lizards, and large insects. A favorite food of theirs was the Skull Island White Bat, which they tore from their roosts as they slept in the daytime, or hunted at dusk.

The World of Kong Skull Island White Bats were a small species with seven- to nine-inch-long wingspans that were not true bats. They were instead an analogous species with rodent ancestry. Despite this, they had large ears and hunted insects and centipedes in the night by sonar.
Terapusmordax

Main article: Terapusmordax.
Terapusmordax were a species of flying rodent with a eight- to 10-foot-long wingspan, and a stench that Project Legacy scientists recorded as being enough to make eyes water and noses burn.
Skin-bird
Skin-bird.png
The World of Kong Skin-birds were another species of flying rodent with a five- to seven-foot-long wingspan. They lived in solitude and were more of gliding rodents than flying ones. Not being particularly adept at flying, and thus prevented from catching prey on the wing, Skin-birds hunted lizards and other terrestrial prey. They were one of the only species unaffected by Terapusmordax's scent, and would fly into their roosts to prey on their young, but had to be fast in this practice or they would be overwhelmed by the larger creatures.

The Skin-bird is represented with an early piece of concept art for the film's "flying creature" which would later become the Terapusmordax. It was designed in 2003 by Greg Broadmore under the name "Flying dog" in MetaCreations' "Painter Classic" program. [5]

Megaprimatus kong

King Kong,
The World of Kong
Main article: Kong's species.
Megaprimatus kong were 18- to 25-foot-tall apes that had been hunted nearly to extinction by Vastatosaurus rex at the time of Skull Island's discovery. While they had lived on the island for many thousands of years, the Megaprimatus were certainly not native to the island and were likely brought from mainland Asia. While they physiologically resembled African gorillas, it is theorized that they descended from Gigantopithecus.[6] Regardless, they had vastly increased in size in a short time, whether as a response to Skull Island's harsh environment or through selective breeding, no one can be sure. Ape effigies left by the original human inhabitants of Skull Island point to their being revered by those people.

Gigantopithecus
Test Image.png
Myth Explorer: The Quest for Kong In the second episode of the web series, it is alleged that a species of Gigantopithecus also lived on Skull Island. Whether they are believed to have cohabited with Megaprimatus or evolved into Megaprimatus on the island is unknown. With The World of Kong establishing that Gigantopithecus is a possible evolutionary ancestor to Megaprimatus, and that Megaprimatus were an invasive species that arrived only a "few thousand years ago," it would seem highly implausible. However, given the unique evolutionary pressures on Skull Island, and this world's Gigantopithecus having been extant 100,000 years before the modern day instead of going extinct 200,000 years ago, it is not impossible.

Main article: King Kong.

Since ancient times, the giant apes that lived on Skull Island fought with the Skullcrawlers for their lives, and by the time that humans first arrived, there were only two members of the species left. Eventually they too were killed, but they left behind a son who would come to be known as Kong, a word in the Iwi language meaning "The Mountain that Thunders Death." Kong's species were benevolent and altruistic creatures who assumed the duty of shepherding over the other life on the island and protecting it from the more vicious and violent species of the island which threatened it, namely the Skullcrawlers. As the last of his kind, Kong continued their mission, earning him the status of a god among the Iwi.

Long ago, two rival peoples known as the Tagu and Atu arrived on Skull Island. Trapped on the island together, they gradually merged together into the singular Tagatu people, though some tribal divides still remained. While initially the Tagatu were masters of the island's wildlife and tamed and bred several species, they were eventually forced to cower in a village located behind a massive wall, living in fear of the island's predators. By the 20th century, they worshiped the last living member of the Kongs, and frequently carried out sacrifices to appease him.

When the Tagu and Atu first arrived on Skull Island, they brought with them their gigantic selectively bred apes known as Kongs. Once the Tagatu fled behind the wall and lost their connection to the island's wildlife, the remaining Kongs moved to the jungles of the island and continued to live in the wild. Ultimately, the species disappeared and only three Kongs were left behind: two mates and their juvenile son. The mother and father were both slain by Gaw and her Deathrunners, while the son escaped and grew up, finally taking his revenge by slaying Gaw and becoming the island's new king.

Humans once lived on Skull Island, and had likely brought apes they worshiped from Africa to the island which evolved into Gorilla gigans. However, by 2009 there were no humans left on the island, and what happened to them remains a mystery.
Giant Gaur
Test Image.png
Kong Reborn Herds of a gigantic species of black-skinned bovine with thin fur populated the jungles of Skull Island. They resembled the bull gaur of Southeast Asia, but stood nine feet tall at the shoulder, and weighed at least three tons. Their curving horns were three feet long, and curved outward and upward.[8] They were a typical prey species of the Meat-Eaters, and in 2009, a Gaur was taken after trying to run away after hearing the creature approach from the jungle while it was grazing. Later, two of the giant bovines crossed the path of Jack Denham and Roxanne Blaine as they walked through the jungle, but both parties elected to ignore the other.
Giant One-Horned Rhinoceros

Kong Reborn A gigantic rhinoceros with only one horn on its nose could be seen in the jungles. Its presence in the jungle is likely a reference to the scrapped Arsinotherium from the original film that was replaced by a Styracosaurus before both of their scenes were cut completely.[9]
Gorilla gigans

Kong Reborn
Main article: Kong Mark II.
Gorilla insulaecranii was a species classification given to the cloned Kong. Due to its being composed of several types of ape DNA including that of Gorilla gigans, Gorilla gorilla, and Pan paniscus, it was given its own species. In 2009, the sole individual of the species was introduced to Skull Island, and was accepted into the native troop of Gorilla gigans.
