Takashi Yamazaki (山崎 貴,   Yamazaki Takashi) is a Japanese director and screenwriter. Inspired to enter the filmmaking business after seeing 1972's Encounter with the Unknown and 1977's Star Wars at the age of 13,[1] Yamazaki began his career in the late 1980s working for Shirogumi's special effects department on films such as Juzo Itami's A Taxing Woman's Return and Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Sweet Home. He made his directorial debut on the 2000 ROBOT science fiction film Juvenile. His third film, Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005), won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture, and was followed by two sequels. The first of those sequels, released two years later, featured Godzilla in an imaginary sequence. In 2012, he married fellow director Shimako Sato; they had previously worked together on 2008's K-20: Legend of the Mask. In 2021, Yamazaki directed Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle, a flying theater motion simulator ride in Seibuen amusement park, Tokorozawa, Saitama, Japan. Yamazaki is the director and screenwriter of the 2022 fantasy film Ghostbook, co-produced by Toho, Kodansha, Shirogumi Inc., ROBOT, and Abe Shuji, Inc. He is also directing another Godzilla film entitled Blockbuster Monster Movie.
