The Wako Building is a famous department store in Ginza, Tokyo. Though not as prominent a landmark as other locations within the city such as Tokyo Tower and the National Diet Building, its appearance in an iconic sequence during Godzilla's attack in Godzilla has led to it making several appearances throughout the franchise.
History
Showa era
Godzilla
During Godzilla's rampage through Tokyo, he eventually entered Ginza, and continued his attack. As he marched through the area, he eventually walked right up to the Wako Building. As its iconic clock tower began to chime, Godzilla roared menacingly at it, as well as a small group of citizens who were sheltering nearby, before effortlessly demolishing the clock tower with a single swipe, causing the building to partially collapse.
King Kong vs. Godzilla
During an establishing shot of Tokyo, the Wako Building is briefly seen.
Reiwa era
Shin Godzilla
Godzilla: Minus One
In 1947, with Japan still under the allied military occupation following the end of World War II, the Wako Building was in use as a post exchange (PX) facility for use by allied soldiers and military staff. During Godzilla's assault on Ginza, he briefly stopped near the Wako Building when a detachment of Type 4 Chi-To medium tanks began firing on him from the National Diet Building. The Wako Building was almost directly in the path of the shockwave of the nuclear explosion generated by Godzilla's Atomic Breath; as the dust cleared, it was revealed to still be standing, but was almost entirely destroyed, with its clock tower leaning dangerously to one side.
