History
Heisei era
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
During the prologue, several Boeing 747s were seen at the airport. Just after one of the 747s took off, Godzilla appeared in Kowloon Bay, near the coast of Hong Kong, after having survived the destruction of Baas Island. Godzilla was now covered in mysterious lava like rashes. Suddenly, he attacked the airport, and nearly took down one of the airliners, before he turned back towards the city and began to decimate it with blasts of his atomic spiral ray.
Trivia
- Before it closed, Kai Tak Airport was famous for its 'Checkerboard approach,' which forced planes to negotiate small mountains and tall buildings to get to the runway. As a result, many flights suffered hard landings or even overshot the runway into Kowloon Bay as a result.
- Curiously, both the opening and closing scenes of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah take place at or near an airport. The opening takes place in Kai Tak Airport, while the final scenes take place around Haneda Airport and the docks nearby.
