The Arctic Ocean is the smallest of the world's oceans. It borders the northernmost shores of North America, Europe, and Asia, along with the Bering Strait and the Greenland Scotland Ridge. As large portions of it are locked in ice, various kaiju have emerged from the ice sheets or dwelled in the waters below.

History

Showa era

The Last War

Following the ceasefire between the Federation and the Alliance, war between the two factions erupted once again over the Arctic Ocean.

King Kong vs. Godzilla

Godzilla escaping from an iceberg in the Arctic Ocean

After having been locked in ice for seven years, Godzilla was causing the temperatures in the Arctic Ocean to warm. In response, the United Nations sent a scientific team aboard the submarine Seahawk to investigate the cause. During this investigation, the submarine crashed into a radiant iceberg that that Godzilla was residing within. The King of the Monsters broke free from the iceberg, and destroyed the Seahawk, before traveling south towards Japan.

Gamera the Giant Monster

Gamera attacking the Chidori Maru

After American fighter jets shot down a nuclear aircraft of unknown nationality, a nuclear explosion occurred, rupturing the Arctic ice and awakening Gamera. Afterwards, Gamera attacked the Chidori Maru, destroying the vessel and killing all on board.

Godzilla

"The Firebird"

After Godzilla and the Firebird's battle at Pitkin, the Firebird traveled to the Arctic to lay eggs. Godzilla and the Calico crew followed the Firebird there, and a second battle between the two monsters ensued atop Arctic ice, while Godzooky got into some antics. The Firebird tackled Godzilla into the ocean, and the two tussled under the water, before Godzilla wrestled her off. The Firebird retreated into an undersea cave, and Godzilla began to block the entrance with boulders, trapping the monster inside and defeating her. With the Firebird defeated and no further risk of Arctic ice melting, Godzilla and the Calico crew departed from the Arctic Ocean.

Heisei era

Godzilla vs. Mothra

12,000 years ago, Mothra defeated Battra following a battle between the two and sealed him in the Arctic Ocean. Thousands of years later, in 1993, Battra awakened following an asteroid collision, and swam to the coast of Japan.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla emerging in his evolved form

Sometime following her battle with Godzilla in 2021, Tiamat took up residence beneath Kvitøya in the Arctic Ocean, absorbing massive amounts of electromagnetic energy from solar winds emitted by the sun. In 2027, Godzilla swam to Tiamat's lair to claim it with the intent of preparing himself to confront a new threat, and blasted a hole into its side. Enraged, Tiamat attacked Godzilla, and after a brief battle, the King of the Monsters killed her before entering her lair. There he rested, absorbing energy to fuel his evolution. Eventually, he emerged in his evolved form, and traveled to Cairo after sensing Kong's presence on the surface.

Comics

Godzilla, King of the Monsters

Volume 1

After freezing Godzilla with Freezer tanks, Dr. Mad Oniyama had Rodan fly Godzilla to the Arctic Ocean near the North Pole, before plunging the King of the Monsters into the freezing sea water. Luckily, two unmanned nuclear submarines fired nuclear missiles at Godzilla, thawing him out and allowing him to continue his fight with Rodan. Rodan snatched Godzilla from the water and dropped him, sending Godzilla hurtling towards a jagged iceberg with the intent of impaling the King of the Monsters; however, Godzilla rebounded off the iceberg with his tail, and dragged Rodan down to the ground and onto his element. With Rodan outmatched, Godzilla tore his left wing off, before killing him with an atomic breath blast. Victorious, Godzilla returned to the ocean.

Volume 2

Some time later, Dr. Oniyama traveled to the Arctic Ocean in a submarine with his Godzilla clone to retrieve Battra's body, locked in ice. The Godzilla clone broke it free, and brought it back to Satan Atoll.

Godzilla: Aftershock

In the Barents Sea, MUTO Prime attacked a Russian submarine. Godzilla suddenly plowed into her, but she retaliated with a strike of her forelimb and escaped.

Monsterverse Declassified

"Tiamat"

Searching for a new lair, Tiamat came upon a cave in Kvitøya that emanated a pink substance, when she was attacked by Abzu. After a brief tussle, Tiamat overwhelmed and killed the starfish-like creature, and entered the cave to rest in it amidst the pink substance, becoming encased in a crystalline structure.

Some time after, Monarch sent a submarine to investigate the area in the Arctic Ocean where Abzu was killed, and confirmed the cave was an entrance to the Hollow Earth. However, the submarine was destroyed by Tiamat.

Following Godzilla's battle with Tiamat, Monarch had been sampling and studying Tiamat's remains, and found that they had not decayed. One of Monarch's operatives, Jae Jørgensen, piloted a submarine to capture photos of the aftermath of the fight and collect more of the Titan's remains, before traveling through the portal in Tiamat's lair to Monarch Outpost #237 in the Hollow Earth.

Books

GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla

In 2037, Godzilla traveled to the Arctic Ocean to store up energy in anticipation of Gorath, which was on a collision course with the Earth. There he rested until 2042, when he emerged from the Arctic ice once again and obliterated the asteroid with a red spiralled variant of his atomic breath.
