GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse
Refugees fleeing from monster attacks in Africa and West Asia traveled westward into Europe, where they often stopped in refugee camps in Turkey. While nationalist parties that called for the exclusion of immigrants and refugees were winning elections in many countries, an account by a Malian refugee stated that the Turkish government - under the leadership of the President - was doing everything it could to accomodate the refugees.
Turkey was able to set up large numbers of refugee camps due to support from the EU, although this was in exchange of keeping the refugees within Turkey. While some European countries accepted refugees - like Germany, taking in 500,000 in 2016 - most European borders were tightly closed. In total, about 40 million refugees were stationed in Turkey.
In 2022, the largest refugee camp in the world - in Izmir, Turkey - was attacked by Orga. Izmir was originally a stopover point on the way to Europe via Cyprus. After the advent of Gezora in the Mediterranean Sea, those who had lost their way ended up staying in Izmir - becoming the site of the largest refugee camp in Turkey. As a result, Izmir had become one of the largest and most densely populated areas in the world, at the end of which was the refugee camp.
While the Turkish government hesitated to attack, Izmir was overrun by Orga. The volunteer Turkish forces that faced him also comprised of able-bodied refugees who were not given any proper training.
While the official records stated that Orga's attack killed 1 million people, the inclusion of refugees might have extended the toll to near 10 million deaths.
GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla
In a flashback sequence, it is revealed that many refugees from Pakistan and Central Asia traveled to Turkey after the breakout of the 4th Indo-Pakistani War. Many of these refugees were stationed in Izmir, where Orga later attacked in 2022.

Godzilla: 70th Anniversary
In 1971, Godzilla and Hedorah battle off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey. Colonel Schooler of the Anti-Megalosaurus Force (AMF) welcomes new recruits Mehmet Yilmaz and Ömer Bulut. He assigns them to Hedorah, a newly-discovered monster, and introduces them to the heads of the AMF's Godzilla team: Ota Murakami and Kentaro Yoshihara. Murakami explains that Godzilla has already barreled through the high-yield sea mines that they laid down, and while they plan to deploy Maser batteries if the monsters near the city, for now they have nothing to do but wait. Just as Yoshihara warns them that monster fights tend to be lengthy affairs, Godzilla blasts Hedorah into pieces with his atomic breath. The Godzilla team leaders briskly depart, leaving Yilmaz and Bulut to clean up Hedorah's remains.
Work in the Bosphorus Exclusion Zone is pure drudgery, and constant exposure to the Smog Monster even causes Yilmaz's hair to begin falling out. Their request to be reassigned to another monster is denied. By 1974, Hedorah's remains have been collected in a large coastal facility. Bulut is ecstatic to see an AMF helicopter, believing that they're finally going to be transferred, only to be greeted by Murakami and Yoshihara. Yilmaz and Bulut are horrified, knowing that Godzilla can't be far behind; the King of the Monsters soon surfaces, speeding towards the facility. The men desperately drive towards it in a jeep, pleading for Godzilla to stop as Murakami and Yoshihara question what they plan to do. Unmoved, Godzilla obliterates the facility with his atomic breath, causing Hedorah to reform. Godzilla tears at Hedorah and tail-whips him, spreading around his sludge once more, as Yilmaz and Bulut despair.
