In the year 2042, Abdul-Majid Haji Shaikh Akbarak - a refugee from Karak, Jordan - described how Iceland was tranformed into a refugee camp for people fleeing from all over the world: Africa, China, India, the Middle East, and even escapees from Australia. It was not a very comfortable place for individuals like him, who were from warmer countries.
As Godzilla dispatched the asteroid Gorath from the North Pole, Abdul stated how it was an extraordinary event to watch the dawn appear from the North from his perspective in Iceland.

Godzilla Rivals: Mothra Vs. Hedorah
In Iceland, Astrid glumly walked past booths at Bortenfor's annual Mothra festival. Her grandmother, Ana Arneberg, found her and handed off kites she found at the shrine. Astrid asked Arneberg not to work so hard; she replied that she could if Astrid didn't take so many breaks. A young festival attendee asked them if Mothra is real. Arneberg explained that the moth monster has protected their village against evil for time immemorial; Astrid instead told her that the village invented Mothra as a tourist attraction. Astrid came upon her sister, Aurora, who was helping to clean up the leaflets spread around the festival grounds by its overbearing corporate sponsors. Arneberg revealed to them that she had decided to go off her medication and accept that her final months are at hand. Both sisters were shocked, with Aurora more accepting; Astrid was frightened of a future without their parents or their grandmother. They all embraced, and the matriarch reminded the sisters that they would always have each other.
At the same time, Lawrence Lazek raged at the prognosis for his own disease, which his doctor informed him would prove fatal in a year or less. The richest man in the world, he vowed to spend his entire fortune on a cure if necessary, and was quickly provided an opportunity to do so. His assistant brought him news of a meteor crater where a microscopic alien organism had been discovered, having survived the vacuum of space and atmospheric entry. He ordered an increase in funding to the team studying it and to avoid revealing its existence to the government.
Months later, Astrid and Aurora visited their grandmother's grave. Aurora had told the Mothra festival's organizers that she would be too busy with work to help out, while Astrid would be similarly occupied with school. Astrid was upset that Aurora spoke for her - and was now working for Lazek. Aurora pointed out that Lazek was the biggest employer in the country before leaving.
At the Livskunnskap "Hedorah" Labs, Aurora was told that she would be bringing biowaste of samples that the lab was testing to the incinerators, but little else, and heard a scream coming from behind a closed door. The originator of the scream is Lazek, who had just been injected with a sample of the space creature. To his doctor's surprise, it quickly set to work eating his tumors; he theorized that it was drawn to the radiation from Lazek's past treatments. His doctor urged caution, due to the creature's mysterious nature, but Lazek demanded another injection, offering the doctor's assistants $10 million each. They comply as the doctor left in disgust. Lazek's satisfaction quickly turned to horror as his arm turns purple and the creature burst out of his chest. Hedorah rampaged through the lab, killing every person that it saw and consuming radioactive materials. Aurora heard an evacuation order moments before she watched Lazek's assistant be killed by the monster's acidic sludge. After she evacuated, she called Astrid. Meanwhile, Hedorah killed Lazek's doctor and transforms into its Flying Stage to destroy a helicopter.

As the power went out in Bortenfor, Aurora came to collect her sister. With Hedorah flying towards the town, Astrid suggested that they flee to "the most boring place on Earth": the temple, which they hadn't visited since they were young. They recalled how Arneberg made them sing for her friends there; when they sang it again, a nearby box with Mothra engraved on it started to glow. After they finished, they heard the beating of wings outside: Mothra had arrived. They told her about Hedorah and their newfound belief in her, and she flew off to intercept the space monster. She blew away the smog starting to choke the town, then blasted Hedorah with her antennae lasers. It countered with sludge bullets that she blocked with her wings. Landing, it changed to its towering Perfect Stage. Her silk had no effect on it, and it blasted a hole through her with its eye lasers. Mothra picked up Hedorah and flew it into the air, where lighting fatally struck both of them. Gazing at Mothra's lifeless body, Aurora and Astrid vowed to move forward together. They joined a crowd watching a massive egg that appeared near the shore, which they recognized contains the next Mothra.
