The Vortaak (ヴォルターク,   Vorutāku) are an alien species that act as the primary antagonists of the Atari/Pipeworks Godzilla video game trilogy: Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee (2002), Godzilla: Save the Earth (2004), and Godzilla: Unleashed (2007). They repeatedly invade the Earth with the intention to plunder its resources for their own, as they have done with many planets before it.

Name

The "-aak" ending of the Vortaak's name may have been inspired by that of the Kilaaks from Destroy All Monsters.

Culture

The Vortaak appear to operate as a monarchy, as evident by their queen, Vorticia acting as their leader, and are formal enough to send broadcasts to humanity about their impending invasion. The Vortaak Homeworld, simply called "Vortaak" in the stage select, appears exclusively as an arena in the Xbox version of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. It is unlocked by beating Adventure Mode with Kiryu. The planet has a harsh volcanic landscape surrounded by mountains, with rocks and a few buildings also present in the arena.

History

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee

The Vortaak were a dominant alien species that conquered other planets to expand their civilization. The Adventure Mode begins with the Vortaak broadcasting their plans to conquer Earth by using mind control on Earth's kaiju and unleashing them on the planet's major cities, in order to "encourage cooperation". The player's selected monster breaks free from the Vortaak influence and fights the other monsters in an arcade-style progression system. Once the player has defeated all the Earth monsters, the Vortaak bring them aboard their mothership for a final battle against their champion, Mechagodzilla (or Mecha-King Ghidorah if the player is playing as Mechagodzilla, or Kiryu if the player is playing as Orga in the Xbox version). Defeating the champion monster teleports the player's monster back to Earth, with the Vortaak fleeing the planet, vowing that they will return.

Godzilla: Save the Earth

After the player selects their monster for Adventure Mode, Vorticia, the Queen of the Vortaak, broadcasts her intentions to obtain the Earth's scientists newly discovered "G-Cells" (containing "the secrets of Godzilla's DNA") and use them to create the ultimate monster. She sends monsters of her own to the planet to locate and acquire them for her. As in Destroy All Monsters Melee, the player's monster fights other monsters in an arcade-style progression in a race to obtain the G-Cells, which are hidden across each arena. The final arena is again the Vortaak Mothership, with their champion varying based on which monster the player selected. If the game is played on hard difficulty as Godzilla 2000, SpaceGodzilla serves as the final opponent in Tokyo. When defeated, an animated cutscene shows SpaceGodzilla being trapped in a black hole, with Godzilla 2000 roaring triumphantly as the Vortaak once again retreat into space.

Godzilla: Unleashed

Despite a long absence, the Vortaak returned once again to conquer Earth. Although no longer the main antagonists, that role being filled by the escaped Spacegodzilla and the Mutants faction, they are a major player in the race to obtain the power of the planetwide crystal infestation. They act as the leaders of the game's Alien faction, consisting of Gigan, King Ghidorah, Megalon, Mechagodzilla, and Orga. If the player selects one of these monsters for Story Mode, they can secure a successful victory for the Vortaak; they can also act on their own and obtain the power of the crystals for themselves to conquer the planet.

Regardless of which monster and faction the player picks, several story beats involving the Vortaak still occur. The aliens' grand invasion plan is postponed after their mothership is damaged by incoming asteroids, prompting Vorticia to send her monsters to Earth to obtain information regarding the crystal threat as they begin repairs, hoping they can help to empower her own monsters. As she learns more about their mysterious power, Vorticia sends King Ghidorah to Earth, empowered by the alien crystals, to defeat her kaiju foes. Once the repairs are complete, the Vortaak begin their invasion proper, with the Mothership appearing over San Francisco. If the player shoots the Mothership down, the crashed ship becomes an arena located in San Francisco Bay.
