After meeting with Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham on the U.S.S. Saratoga, Ford Brody was flown via helicopter to Honolulu International Airport, where he prepared to board a plane back to San Francisco. As he boarded a tram at the airport, Ford witnessed a young Japanese boy named Akio become separated from his parents. Ford grabbed Akio and assured the boy's parents he would bring their son back. As the tram began moving, Ford gave Akio a toy soldier to try and calm him down. Suddenly, the tram stopped as all electricity in the area was knocked out by the EMP of the male M.U.T.O. The power was restored and the tram began moving again, only for its lights to shine onto the M.U.T.O., which was walking over the tracks. The M.U.T.O. slammed its claw into the tram car, splitting it in half and causing passengers to fall out of it and to their deaths. Ford managed to grab onto Akio and prevent him from falling, as fighter jets flew by to attack the M.U.T.O. As the M.U.T.O. wreaked havoc on the runway, Godzilla reached the runway to challenge it. The M.U.T.O. spread its wings and screeched up at Godzilla, who responded with a deafening roar. The monsters engaged in a brief battle which spilled over into the rest of Honolulu and ended when the M.U.T.O. flew out over the open ocean.
