After determining the volcano would pose no danger to the island, dozens of explosive devices were strategically placed around the volcano's crater in order to create a controlled eruption. Izu Oshima (伊豆大島 is a volcanic island in the Izu Islands. It both featured in in the Izu-ōshima)1984 and 1989 Godzilla film, The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante

Heisei era
The Return of Godzilla
When the the second Godzilla attacked Japan, it was determined the monster possessed a homing instinct similar to that of birds, and to this end a plan was formulated to use this against him. Doctor Makoto Hayashida began work on a transmitter capable of luring Godzilla to the island, with the intent of trapping him inside Mount Mihara.
