Tomoki Kobayashi (小林知己 Kobayashi Tomoki) was a Japanese sculptor and modeler. He served as Toho's third and final chief modeler, after Nobuyuki Yasumaru.
Kobayashi was hired to Toho in 1973 at the referral of background painter Fuchimu Shimakura. Believing he too would serve as a painter, Kobayashi was instead appointed to the company's modeling department and took up an apprenticeship with Nobuyuki Yasumaru. He served as a modeling and plastering assistant through the 70s and 80s, starting with Godzilla vs. Megalon. In 1989, he was recognized for his work on Godzilla vs. Biollante and was promoted to chief modeler by 1991. Over the years, he also created several sculptures of Godzilla for various sites in Japan, including Nemu Plaza outside Hibiya Chanter, at the main gate of Toho Studios in Tokyo, and at an exhibition room in the National Museum of Japanese History. Kobayashi passed away from cancer sometime in 2009.[1]
