— David Lind before attempting to enter the Hollow Earth (Godzilla vs. Kong: The Official Movie Novelization) |
The Hollow Earth is an underground location in the MonsterVerse. First theorized in Kong: Skull Island, it appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. It is made up of cave-like tunnels and passages that lead to a large, inner world.
History
MonsterVerse
Kong: Skull Island
William Randa recruited Houston Brooks for Monarch after reading a paper he wrote in support of the maligned Hollow Earth theory: the existence of "massive underground spaces isolated from the surface world." Randa theorized that one such space existed beneath Skull Island, and that this lost world was the home of countless monsters. During Monarch's expedition to the island, seismic charges dropped by the Sky Devils helicopter squadron on Skull Island showed that the bedrock was nearly hollow. After Kong attacked the helicopters, they learned from Hank Marlow that the charges had disturbed the massive, subterranean Skullcrawlers. Nonetheless, Brooks's theory remained unverified, and gradually fell out of favor at Monarch.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
As Monarch raced to Antarctica to stop Alan Jonah from awakening King Ghidorah, Godzilla fell off their sensors. Dr. Rick Stanton theorized that he was using underwater tunnels in the Hollow Earth to swiftly travel. After the U.S. military used the Oxygen Destroyer to end a battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah near Isla de Mara, Godzilla retreated to an ancient underwater temple in the Hollow Earth to recover. Monarch tracked him there via submarine with the help of Mothra, and Dr. Ishiro Serizawa sacrificed himself to detonate a nuclear weapon, revitalizing the Titan. After Godzilla killed Ghidorah, Monarch made plans to explore the Hollow Earth, hoping to discover the origin of the Titans.

About a year before the main events of the film, an exploration was attempted to go into the Hollow Earth which went wrong and killed Nathan Lind's brother, David Lind, due to the change in gravity during the entry into Hollow Earth. Nathan Lind published books on the Hollow Earth to negative feedback and poor sales. This would ultimately get the attention Apex who needed the Hollow Earth energy to power their creation Mechagodzilla. Monarach and Apex send a combined expedition lead by Nathan Lind. The expedition is given HEAVs to travel into the Hollow Earth and use Kong to guide them to it. After Kong was airlifted following Godzilla attacking their fleet and Jia convincing Kong to travel to the Hollow Earth, Apex scanned the energy and send it up to Hong Kong where Apex was able to replicate it and have it used to power up Mechagodzilla. Godzilla proceded use his atomic breath to burrow to the Hollow Earth. Kong climbs up the tunnel and reaches Hong Kong.. After the two Titans joined forces to destroy Mechagodzilla, Kong permanently settled in the Hollow Earth, with Ilene, Jia, and Nathan monitoring him at a new Monarch outpost.

The fish monster Genitor and its swarm attacked Godzilla when he visited the ruins of his temple. He identifies the creatures as coming from "the deep hollows" after Serizawa's nuclear weapon opened up a passage. After his fight with Tiamat, he entered one of his old lairs, passing by a statue of him or a member of his race, as well as ancient carvings depicting several Titanus Gojira alongside humans and whales. Godzilla sensed that there was once another rival here besides Tiamat, only to see a skull of a deceased Titanus Kong. Afterwards, Godzilla called upon the rest of the titans under his control to return to their ancestral home to rest.
