— Vice Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Yajima (Shin Godzilla)

Operation Taba (タバ作戦,   Taba Sakusen) was a failed combat operation led by the JSDF against Godzilla in the 2016 Toho Godzilla film Shin Godzilla. Following Godzilla's reappearance in Kamakura, a defense perimeter was created along the Tama River in an attempt to halt the monster's advance toward Tokyo; however, all conventional weaponry used had no effect, and Godzilla broke through the defense line.

When the giant creature Godzilla resurfaced in Kamakura, it began stomping toward Tokyo and was expected to reach the city in three hours. Additionally, Japanese government officials feared a worse disaster if the monster attacked a nuclear facility. Prime Minister Seiji Okochi inquired Rando Yaguchi about the status of the Yaguchi Plan, to which Yaguchi answered it wasn't finalized. With the support of the cabinet members and after learning he had the authoritative power to attack, Okochi ordered the mobilization of the JSDF.

A battalion of JSDF ground forces deployed along the Tama River

Defense Force officials received the Prime Minister's order and made Kawasaki the primary battlefield for Operation Taba, with the Tama River as the absolute defense line. Mitsubishi F-2s took off from Misawa Air Base while JASDF AH-1 Cobras from the Kisarazu Garrison and AH-64 Apaches from Tachikawa Airfield were deployed. Meanwhile, a massive battalion of Type 10 tanks, Type 90 tanks, and Type 16 MCVs positioned along the bank of the Tama River near the Maruko Bridge. The command center for the operation was set on the grounds of the Tamagawa sengen shrine. 1st Regiment Operation Taba Commander Saigo ordered to pinpoint all attacks on the head and legs of the creature.

Soon the four helicopter squadrons arrived and positioned above Kawasaki, with Godzilla 1,200 meters from the city. Once helicopter reconnaissance confirmed evacuation was complete, Okochi finally authorized the use of force, allowing Phase 1 of the operation to commence. The AH-1 Cobras fired their Sumitomo M197 cannons at the monster's head but to no effect. Commander Saigo ordered the Apaches to shoot their M230 chain guns, but a Kawasaki OH-1 confirmed the 16,000 rounds fired also had no effect. Saigo requested permission to use missiles, and Okochi authorized the use of all necessary weapons. Every helicopter simultaneously launched all their missiles toward Godzilla's head, but through the thick black cloud of smoke, the monster appeared unfazed.

Godzilla halting during Phase 2 of Operation Taba

Seeing the ineffectiveness of the helicopters, the JSDF switched to Phase 2. The Type 10 tanks concentrated fire on Godzilla's legs, decreasing his walking speed. Artillery fire from Type 99 155 mm self-propelled howitzers shot its head along with other ground forces, causing Godzilla to turn and enter the Tama River. Missiles launched by multiple M270 MLRSs from the Fuji Garrison, along with the continuous fire of the ground units, eventually made Godzilla halt entirely. Command switched to Phase 3, and the F-2s dropped JDAM-equipped bombs directly onto the monster's legs and head. Godzilla turned northwest as the second wave of fighters continued their assault, with the massive explosions causing large plumes of smoke to conceal Godzilla and the surrounding area. The government officials became shocked and wondered if they succeeded until the kaiju threw a section of the Maruko Bridge into the air. The command center tents collapsed while the Type 10 tanks retreated, with several tanks becoming damaged during the chaos. With the forward command post destroyed and ammunitions depleted, Godzilla continued its march into Tokyo.
