A relative of actress and tarento Midori Utsumi, Utsumi was born in a liquor store. Utsumi liked to train his physique, and practiced with professional wrestlers at the Riki Sports Palace. Also interested in auto racing, Utsumi drove for Toho's race team and by chance had the opportunity to act in Toho productions such as Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo.
